Hi Thanks for the video. I have a question. We are renovating garage and our contractor has created frame for ceiling using 2x4 only. Can it hold up the 1/2” drywalls ?

How hard was it installing the new ceiling joists? Did you throw 1 at a diagonal to the top and have to bow the other end while lifting

Based on a span chart 2x6 is not sufficient and those boards running up to the rafters may not be great as the rafters are not designed to support weight in that manner. Am I thinking about that right?

2x6 would not be sufficient free spanning the garage. That’s why we took the time to go up to the rafters and glue on gussets. This was framed this way to support 1/2” drywall and blown in insulation. It is not a “working attic” nor should it be.

Is it possible to just hang the drywall from the rafters and not have a flat ceiling. Will the rafter hold the weight of the drywall alone?

You could do something like that but you’ll need to keep ceiling joists and collar ties every 4’ OC. Can’t eliminate those as that’s what hold the building together.

Thanks for the video if I'm spaning a 2×6 ×10 ft do you think I need bracing going up to the rafter as well??? Just hanging sheetrock on it

ram 12e 10’ is probably ok. 2x6’s work well as ceiling joists with no live load above it. Here was a different story because we were spanning 24’.

Was there a reason for only having an 8' ceiling? It seems like it would have been easier and cheaper to put 4" insulboard up to the roof joists and kept the high ceiling.

Steve 1961P. Good question. Just doing what the customer asked. I think the ceiling joists can cross anywhere in the bottom 1/3 of the roof plane and still be affective holding the exterior walls in place. I’m this case we just did what was easy and cheaper for the customer.
