I loved that you said, "DON'T UNDERSELL ANYTHING". Such a good point for job applications in general.

I was always so happy when a job ad only called for a CV, cover letter, and reference letters to start of. Only needed to write philosophies and such if I got to the next round. So helpful when doing so many applications.

Love your videos and your academic course! Can you share more in the future about workload and negotiations? I'd love to hear more about this topic. It's a foreign concept for those outside of academia or just starting. Thank you!!

Thank you! I can definitely share those things. My experience is so different from most people's but I'm happy to share my perspective. And to answer some of your questions now, my job is funded by a grant so there was no wiggle-room on my salary. And I teach 12-hours each semester but mostly only have 1 or 2 preps.

Hi Toyin. So nice from you to share your experience getting a job as a professor. I hope you can motivate other young PhD to do the same.

Wow, the academic job application is definitely a process. Congratulations on obtaining your dream job. Curious to know your thoughts about joining or accepting invitations to honor societies. In your experience, is it worth the investment or is it better suited to take advantage of the resources of all that your university has to offer. Tfs

This is a great question! I never joined any honor societies in grad school. I'm not sure if there were any available. But I also didn't do any honor societies in undergrad so they were probably just not on my radar. In my opinion, there are a lot of free honors and accolades to obtain in grad school. But it likely depends on your field of study. Maybe some fields really encourage honor societies.

I just wish there were jobs to apply for! The pandemic reduced the tenure-track positions and adjunct jobs from 27/40 to 3/6 in my field. 😭😭

I'm so sorry about that! I do believe that this situation is temporary. But in the meantime is there something that you could be doing now to really make your application stand out when there are more jobs available?

Hi Toyin!! As a grad student, this series is soooo great!! Such useful tips, and I'm so happy I found somebody who has similar views of their research and teaching experiences as I do. How'd you find the positions you eventually applied to? Are there any websites/key search words to plug in when trying to find jobs like this? Thanks so much :)
@theacademicsociety

So glad that this series is resonating with you! My first answer is very field specific. In the math world we have a website called mathjobs.org and this is where all math jobs are posted and you can filter by school and position type. I also looked at higheredjobs.com but perhaps your field has a similar website with job postings. I'd recommend asking your professors in your field.

Your channel is amazing. My teaching statement is drafted and I have received a feedback. I think I need to make it much more about what inside and outside my classroom is like and not some generic philosophy about what math teaching should be like. There's a math education professor here at my department, I've just learned I need to let them review my teaching statement. September is really early to apply. I have 10 jobs saved so far and the earliest deadline is October 10. Quick question though: the Penn state offer that came in October, was it already past their application deadline? If not, do you advise applying way before the deadline? I think some if not most schools say they will give full consideration if you apply before the deadline.

Many schools give full consideration before the deadlines. Some schools have early deadlines so that they can hire before the JMM but other schools will have interviews at the JMM. I got 3 offers by November and I don't think the deadline had past for all of them. If a school is hiring for more than one position, they may start the process before the deadlines

yas, i always detailed everything i did as a GTA, even underlined, bolded etc, instructor of record, created, made, and assessed assignments, lectured etc. also never understood how people could just straight up lecture for 50+ minutes, i always tell my students, im only up her for 15-25minutes max, and the rest you'll be doing stuff, they learn from each other, and by doing

Thank you so much. I see academia is seriously a long-tail process. So to say that you have to put together your package, did you have someone review your entire application package or just the teaching statement?
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 3 жыл бұрын
I had different people review different things. I asked the Math Ed person to review my teaching statement, my advisor to review my research statement, and my department head to review my cover letter. And I asked my friends to review everything else.
