I just graduated and I'm so happy I don't have to deal with type of people anymore XD. Such a strange environment full of conceated people.

Congratulations on finishing your degree! I'm sorry that the people you interacted with weren't more down to earth. We definitely need more real, kind, supportive, and humble people in academia

You are not a professor ma'am just a lecturer, stop claiming a title you don't have it is criminal
@theacademicsociety18 күн бұрын
"Professor" is just a title for someone who teaches at a university (and sometimes high school teachers are addressed as professors). For example, at my university, my position is called Lecturer but at a different university, my position could be called Teaching Assistant Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor (this is my mom's title at her university). All three of these roles require a PhD. You are likely thinking of a tenure-track position that requires research. When I was on the job market after grad school, I was offered two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions but turned them down for my position because I love teaching so much more than research. I mostly use the word "professor" in my video titles because the title is more widely known than "lecturer" which is typically a fairly new type of position at bigger universities. Hope that clears things up!

Wow, PhD in Math. You gotta be like pretty smart. I never passed any math exam in my life unfortunately and I carry a phobia for numbers to this day😢. I am 32 , do you think there's any chance I can ever get Math and if so, what do you suggest?
@theacademicsocietyАй бұрын
It definitely starts with having a growth mindset! I would recommend this TED talk by Jo Boaler on how you can be good at math: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZrGoIabfNaEqrssi=gZT0a1LfHDiyKdJA

@@theacademicsociety my program luckily is online and has big breaks. the only reprieve i've found is literally grinding until im burnt out but being at a place where i get the extended break to then recover. DOING NOTHING is a huge part of recovery. that means i might have two weekends where i do nothing but binge movies, but it works.

We mostly just had really challenging homework sets. So I would work on them as soon as they were given. Then work with the other students in my classes. And for any problems we couldn't answer, I would go to office hours. For qualifying exams, ours were in the summer so I studied for 4-6 hours every day for about 6 weeks to take two exams.

Your channel is amazing. My teaching statement is drafted and I have received a feedback. I think I need to make it much more about what inside and outside my classroom is like and not some generic philosophy about what math teaching should be like. There's a math education professor here at my department, I've just learned I need to let them review my teaching statement. September is really early to apply. I have 10 jobs saved so far and the earliest deadline is October 10. Quick question though: the Penn state offer that came in October, was it already past their application deadline? If not, do you advise applying way before the deadline? I think some if not most schools say they will give full consideration if you apply before the deadline.
@theacademicsociety4 ай бұрын
Many schools give full consideration before the deadlines. Some schools have early deadlines so that they can hire before the JMM but other schools will have interviews at the JMM. I got 3 offers by November and I don't think the deadline had past for all of them. If a school is hiring for more than one position, they may start the process before the deadlines

Know that you are on and interviewing THE WHOLE TIME! Everything is under scrutiny! At dinner, the coffees, walking between appointments. And be kind to everyone you meet. You should be anyway, but even thinking in the most mercenary sense, you never know who's who or whose ear they have.
