In this video, My father will be lowering the original floor by 15cm, and making a leveling through the entire ruin so we can start preparing the Ruin for renovations.
We will be renovating it and reconstructing it by ourselves, so there will be videos of that in the future too :)

Hi guys, I am Alex.
I am an Ukrainian expat who moved to Portugal.
No one in my family ever did any farming, But I discovered that I am very passionate about farming so recently I've purchased this 28 hectares Farm in Central Portugal, with the intention to start a small scale farm raising worms, cows and sheep.
In this little farm I am also planning to build an off-grid home, and be as self sufficient as possible, by growing my own food.
I created this channel to share my journey with the world, The journey of a first generation farmer, that is starting with no prior knowledge and experiences.
That maybe all the mistakes that I will make along this journey, and all the fails maybe will help some of you to learn from my mistake and not make them yourself.
I want to bring value and inspire people who are thinking about farming.
I am not a filmmaker or an editor, I am just a simple guy with a camera.

Hi Alex, Did you try using the laser level in the evening when it’s dark? When you trim that cactus, so you can work on that part of the ruin, save the pieces. If you plant them 3 inches into the soil and water them twice a week they will root and you can have even more cactus! When I get those tiny cactus needles in my hands, I put tape on them to pull them out, it works really well! It might take several tries, but you will eventually get them all out. Jeff

Also, don’t did right next to the walls, you need to leave at least 12” of soil from the wall so the wall isn’t destabilized and collapses. It’s very dangerous if you undermine the foundation!
@AlexLukachina

Hi Jeff, And does that actually work with the tape? That's hillarious and clever at the same time :) I will try that next time :D

Hi Alex, we love the fruit, known here in the Canary Islands as tuno or higo chumbo (nopal or prickly pear in English). Do NOT use gloves to recollect, I haven't found any suitable that don't end up impregnated with spines.. Best way is tongs, once they are ripe. Then place in a bucket/barrel of water for an hour or two and use a brush to move around in the water, removing the tiny spines that otherwise stick into your hand and stay for days! Be careful as the spines float to the surface. Change the water 2, 3 or even 4 times, throwing out the spines each time. We eat fresh (seeds and all) or make juice. Just cut off the top and the bottom and then peel the THICK layer of skin around it. It certainly is charged with many vitamins and health benefits... it's what is know these days as one of nature's "super-foods", whatever that really means. It's easy to prune/cut back... can be done with a kitchen knife, as the "leaves" and trunk are very soft and is very resistant to hard pruning. What you leave growing outside will easily survive and continue to grow and bear more fruit next year, depending on weather conditions of course. If you want more plants, it's also easy to propagate... just take a big "leaf", stick it in a well watered pot of earth and it will root.

Good job Guys, we use a clear hose with coloured water inside it, I have a video where i show how to use this if you want to see.. you can have any length of pipe you want and it is as accurate as a laser level. The cactus is great to eat and if you break off the pieces you can plant them in rows and sell the fruit later, it is popular here. Good luck with the future works💪👍

That is an incredibly happy and healthy Prickly Pear you have there (Opuntia ficus-indica). Congrats, it is a good food source and an excellent water source. Properly cleaned of their glochids, you can eat the fruits, ripe or not, you can ferment the ripe fruits, you can eat the pads, you can also use them as fencing to deter animals. While overly successful in some introduced regions (like where you are) it's no less a success than the people that brought it with them and unlike many other invasive plants you can eat it!!

The cactus is called ' Figueira da India' or ' Piteira ' , and the fruit is ' figo da India ' or ' figo de pita' ,to eat the fig use a fork to hold and a knife to take the skin out so you can safely eat it . They are ready to eat when they get orange red colour .

@sandyangel4243

You could of use a water level. You use a quarter inch clear flexible tube , water and food coloring. Fill the tube with the colored water. Remove all air bubbles. Put one mark on wall at any level..one person will work where mark is. The other person goes to where you want anothher mark. First person lines up water to first mark. When water stops moving and on the mark the other person marks the wall where water at there end stops. Water seeks its own level. This is how it was done before lazor levels. Make sure water is as warm as air around you. You do this by laying in sun with bolts or corks plugging tube ends. Best to use bottled water. Always make sure you work all air bubbles out or your level marks will be off. The clear tubing buy at hard ware store. 50 ft is best. You have better reach.

What you mean is you made a perimeter line in pencil around the wall, which is level. You can then use that pencil line to dig out and level the floor below, at 1metre below the wall line at every point - or at any other chosen floor measurement you think is right. The other way to do this is to use a plastic tube filled with water, set around the perimeter. Water finds its own level so the tube can be laid around the floor to get it level as you dig out the high points.

Hi Scott, This building will be used as a off-grid home that I will be living in. Hopefully if the finances will allow it, I will start rebuilding the other house, And this house will become as some sort of guest house or I will make an airbnb out of it.

@@AlexLukachina I'm really enjoying watching your project. I'm doing something similar at this time in Wisconsin (USA). The mortar I am replacing on a stone silo foundation is mostly a mixture of some type of limestone. I'm doing almost exactly the same as you are, mortaring with a traditional cement based mortar and filling the middle void with a regular bagged concrete mix. My daughter did some work for me on a stone wall about 5 years ago with this same mortar and it does not have a single crack yet anywhere, after 5 long Wisconsin winters.

@@jaimelarson5864 Hi Jaime, sounds awesome! Yea the mortar that they were using is also based on Lime, but very little lime. I said Clay and horse manure, Because its a funny way to say basically its clay and whatever they could shavel around the house, Basically whatever they had around at the time, With a little bit of Lime added to it.

Laser = small one on the ground.. I would came at dusk with spray paint. Laser it - and paint with chunk of cardboard. 1/2 hour job both rooms. Qustion Can you brek that hollow wall and bring small excavating machine inside. That wall is waste anyway. And why foam under cement floor? Portugal is rather hot country. Earth brings you cool - like your thick walls attached straight to the ground. I understand plastic membrane so no moisture ...

Hi Alex, i know you aren't supposed to start building a house from the roof down, but in this case, having good walls (minus the bit that collpased), wouldn't help your present and future work if you installed the new roof? ;)
@AlexLukachina
@AlexLukachina 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Unhuz, You are absolutely right, We need to build the roof. But for that we will need to rebuild the wall first, and then pour a concrete slab on top of the wall. So we can place the wood and then the roof. There are few steps to take before placing the roof, But yes you are right the roof needs to be place before doing any work, But in my case, because the wall collapsed, we need to rebuild it first.

@@AlexLukachina , yeah.... i thought that rebuilding the wall would be one of the very first things, but you leveling the floor before puzzled me.... wouldn't the wall be first than the floor? sorry for the questions, but its just me trying to get to your way of thought

@@unhuz As I said in the video, the ground is not level yet, we will level it before making the floor. The reason we did it now, is because we wanted to be done with the bulk of the Shoveling and all that hard work now, and just then focus on building and etc.
