Cruz's eighth day of life in the NICU is spent with us preparing our home for our new babhy we didn't expect to come so early. We also have a hard time with one of the NICU nurses not caring for Cruz the way we'd like her to. See a day in the life of a breastfeeding NICU mom. I filmed these raw hospital vlogs to share the ups and downs of my postpartum experience after being put to sleep under general anesthesia for our emergency c-section birth when my placenta detached, and to show what it's like to have a severely premature baby in NICU. I hope these vlogs can help someone else know what to expect during their own NICU experience.

We (with some back up from one of Cruz’s wonderful doctors) got it taken care of. I can’t wait to update y’all. Thank you so much for all the prayers and support! 💕 It means so much to us, particularly when facing circumstances like what we dealt with on this day in the vlog and today!

As an OB nurse it’s ok to ask for her to not be assigned to your baby, that happens all the time and they don’t even have to tell her. They just won’t assign her to your son. Please speak up.

I was never very assertive before I had a NICU baby. Your number one priority is that sweet baby, not her feelings! I'm a nurse and a former NICU mom so I know both worlds. You stay on top of them and don't feel bad about it! You're doing great sweet mama!!

I just wanted to comment about Cruz. I am an RN and I am here to tell you and your husband are doing a great job. And YOU NEED to be his advocate, Cruz cannot not speak for himself so you speak for him. Do not worry about hurting anyone feelings. It is YOUR child and he is a preemie at that. The hospital has put that monitoring in for a reason. Tell them you want the monitoring 24/7, there may be times during a procedure they have to turn it off. But tell them you want it right back on. They may have had complaints on her before and you need to report the actions she has administered to Cruz. This time it was one thing that was horrible to look at on your son but next time it could be something harmful to Cruz. It does not matter the reason. Hypothetically it could just be your personalities clash but you should still speak up. You are the boss of how your son is treated. The pacifier thing is so strange that she will not give him the one he likes. I am puzzled by her actions. I will be surprised if they have not had complaints before on her. Please speak up. Like you said Cruz will be there quite a while and you do not want to be worrying all the time. So sorry for the long comment but this made me so mad. God Bless your family and I will be praying for Cruz and the rest of the family.

Please please please request that she stays away from him. He can’t risk having anything happen he’s already so fragile all it takes is one screw up and it could be life threatening to him. Who cares about her feelings, children’s lives are in her hands and if she can’t do her job they need to know about it. This is a critical time for him and he needs the best care he can get! I love how calm you are, you’re truly an inspiration! And you are absolutely freaking gorgeous!! Keep doing what you’re doing!

His life is literally held in the balance with the care he is receiving! I do not want to come off rude as I fully support that you know how to care for your babies but speak up immediately when he is being uncared for by those that are supposed to be keeping him alive! As you know, premature infants health changes in an instant and one wrong thing can literally kill them. It boils my blood to hear how your little guy was treated and I would most certainly report that nurse immediately. Most NICU nurses understand that when you have to leave your baby there, that you are putting all of your trust and faith in them and the belief that they are doing what your child needs, and that takes so much sacrifice on the parents part to make that choice.

Our baby was in NICU 49 days and I had to request a certain nurse not care for my son . I was a first time mama and I was hesitant to speak up but I eventually realized that my baby couldn't speak for himself so I finally told them that they better not put that nurse with him again . The straw that broke the camel's back was she gave him another babies meds ! As hard as it is it's so important you do what you feel is best for your baby ! Our prayers are with you mama ! NICU life is hard !

We had a problem with two different nurses during our daughters stay. One tube fed her when she had orders in to bottle feed her when she is giving cues. I walked in that time to her screaming for a bottle. I complained and that never had that happened. Then one time she got a bath and the nurse insisted that she was to warm. So we left her with out blankets. A couple of hours later she was struggling with her temp but also lost weight because she was struggling with temp. The night nurse gave that nurse a chewing out. The problem nurse then apologized. Sometimes you have to speak up for things to change.

Don’t hesitate to speak up about not having a certain nurse take care of your baby right away. When our son was in the nicu, we “fired” the first nurse we had due to how she was talking to me. It is stressful enough going through life threatening delivery and an early baby that there is no excuse for a nurse to be inattentive. I’ve been enjoying your vlog. Thanks for sharing.

As an OB and NICU RN, I’d like to say please understand that we have several babies to work with at a time and they all have immense needs as well, and sometimes we can’t get to a baby in time. Sometimes it is not the nurses fault but the understaffing at the hospital. That being said, you have had good experiences with other nurses so please do not be afraid to speak up and request that a certain nurse not be assigned to your baby. I am sorry you had that experience. You are amazing for having several children, and working, and having a baby in NICU, and pumping!!! That is rarely seen where I work!! Enjoy your time away from work now that school is over and focus on you and your babies. You are superwoman but you don’t have to be.

I just came across this video, your videos. I'm not sure if this is old.or new I'm an older mom way older, and I'd be livid with this situation with this nurse. I'd definitely take screen capture any and all ill care given to your new born baby! He is your first priority and you are his advocate. Given my grandma has been given this type of care in her end of life care, as her advocate I'd made sure the head person running the hospital knew my disgust at the way she was being treated. Given his already delicate state it's up to the nurses that are in charge of his care to make sure that he has the utmost care given to him. He deserves that much, and so much more. if this so-called nurse is so busy that she cannot attend to a premature baby maybe the hospital needs to take a look at how many babies in the NICU are being handled by how many nurses if that makes sense so if they have three babies to attend to and they're not giving the utmost care to those three babies then they need to have it down to one or two babies that they care for. Do not be afraid when you get to the hospital to either file a complaint or talk to the head person of that hospital your son's life depends on the care that he will get now proceeding forward. Obviously your teacher you know that talkin touching loving your child we'll give him or her the best possible chance. What makes it so sad is that he was unattended for so many hours even though he may not comprehend what's going on he knows when someone's there and when no one's there. I know I'm writing a book but I just wanted to let you know my love prayers positive energy is being sent to your family. I also want to let you know your mama bear and you know what's best for your child, the nurses the doctors the hospital are not the parents of the child they have no say except for their expertise and what's going to help your son grow, become stronger and get home with his parents. It's scary to speak up, if this matter is not addressed potentially another baby will have to suffer just like your baby is suffering under the care of this nurse that seems to not take her duties seriously.

That’s so terrible about the nurse!! I’m sure there’s so many other nurses out there who would love to have that nurse’s job. Oh that made me so mad and sad that she would neglect him like that!!! And for them to put her on the phone with you wasnt right a person in charge should have gone to check on your baby you shouldn’t have to call. It’s terrifying to think if I say something will this person be upset enough to harm my child more she’s already showing her lack of concern😡 I hate that!! your trusting them, I have trouble sending my children to school never mind a tiny baby boy😭😭😭 I’m still praying and I ask God to protect your baby and the hospitals need to make changes that mommy don’t leave without her baby period!! There should be a place just for mommy’s and their babies with special care. I definitely praying he come HOME!!!

You are your child’s only advocate! If there’s a nurse you don’t like get rid of her! My little was on cpap and I felt crazy with all of my requests. Though my doctor told me mom knows best and knows what baby needs/wants. I know it feels weird because you might still see her for the duration of littles stay, but at the end of the day it’s more important that you’re comfortable with who’s taking care of your baby. It’s okay to remove a nurse that was not taking care of your baby properly or even up to your standards. You’re doing amazing momma!

Hearing about the nurse got me upset. This is why the camera app you have is amazing and every NICU should have this. The Nurse sounds lazy..almost like unless a baby is crying or a machine is going off she doesn't do anything unless a feeding is due. Your little one deserves the best care and it seems like he is doing so well which is great. He's too cute! Also you sold me on the breast pump. I swear I felt like I was always sitting down pumping and I wouldn't pump around people since it's kinda loud and awkward but this pump could solve alot. You will have to do a detailed review on it for sure.

Also what that nurse did is NOT okay the thought that she just put a second diaper down instead of changing him more frequently or just changing the sheets makes me So upset :( I would ask to talk to the Charge nurse or the manager and just let them know you feel very uncomfortable having that nurse care for your baby but you don’t want to make a big deal out of it because you really love the care everybody else is doing and it shouldn’t be a problem❤️ Also you’re amazing being a NICU mom is crazy hard!!

You are so beautiful! And you are a rock star, you are what women/moms should strive to be! I'm in awe of all that you do, and then vlog? Totally awesome! Please take sometime for yourself everyday and rest, you just had major surgery! (That's the RN in me talking)

Oh, and yes, I would definitely strongly request that the particular nurse that is not giving Cruz the care he needs be taken off his case. You have that right 100%

She’s fired ! These babies are fighting hard enough ! If your in that job you MUST be on your game at ALL times and be very respectful to the parents! I’m sorry!😞. I’m going to pray that hospital takes responsibility! But Cruz seems to be doing better every day!🙏. So sweet girl please remember we are all prayin for you. ❤️👼🙏

I started watching this last night and for some reason I didn't finish 😕 kinda glad I didn't because when I did today I was furious. How can a nurse be like that? Did she not have compassion for patients? I worked with developmentally disabled adults for 15+ years and I can tell you some are cut out to be excellent staff, while others are not. So I'm thinking this applies to nurses too? As a mom and an advocate for your baby yes I would report it and not really care about anyone's feelings because that's your baby. It might sound uncompassionate to say that, but I would do it in a heartbeat. Equally glad you got it straightened out. Sending love and prayers to you all 🙏❤️

I say this all the time we are our children’s advocates. And when we leave our child or children with someone we expect them to be their advocates.

I have had 2 sick children. My first needed surgery at 6 weeks, and my 2nd had whooping cough and we were in icu and then the normal floor . It’s so hard because I understood the nurses are over worked and have a lot to do, but there’s a level of care they need to be giving and what happened with Cruz is unacceptable.

You can ABSOLUTELY ask to speak to the charge nurse, voice your concerns about that nurse, and ask that she not be assigned to Cruz in the future. That is your right as a parent. Sorry you’re having a hard time with that nurse. I’m a pediatric nurse and we try REALLY hard to honor families’ wishes about the nurses that care for their kids.

Being in the medical field I just can’t with that nurse 🤦🏽‍♀️. Everyone has said what I would’ve said and it sounds like you already had it under control. Anyway I’m so glad Cruz is making progress and you look great!!

I had my daughter on may 23rd. She's still in the hospital. We went in one day and our daughters diaper was soo FULL of pee her little bottom was bleeding. And they said she cried for 3 straight hours that night. Well its no wonder. Since ive said something they always make sure to change her diaper now. I don't care if she pees one time and its "a waste of diapers" or what ever. Ill gladly buy extra. I can't wait to have my baby home! Having to be home without her has been the hardest thing I've ever been through! She's my 4th.

is there somewhere you update between videos so we can stay up todate on Cruz’s status/progress? Instagram? Patreon? Facebook? Also, I know it is costly to have a little in NICU. and that’s not even taking into consideration the weekly ultrasounds you needed to make sure he arrived safely into this world. is there anywhere we can go to make donations or send gifts if we want to? of a gift registry we can choose to send from?

If Cruz is having THAT much secretion buildup, he's getting TOO MUCH humidity! They should be checking on him more regular, considering the condition of his lungs. He is growing and his lungs have to adjust - so they need to constantly adjust his cpap accordingly. Don't ever override your instincts! My family had to cause a lot of drama for my nephew - had we not, they were giving him the wrong medication - as well as putting him on cool mist with his ventilator (after being treated for PNEUMONIA)!! You don't setup cool mist with a vent on a patient who has compromised lungs! That's like stepping outside with it snowing and trying to breath cold, humidified air. Girl... listen to your GUT INSTINCTS!! Make sure they aren't putting Cruz on cool mist or anything that you wouldn't breath normally. These doctors and nurses these days scare me at how little they actually know about their medical treatments. Or they don't follow up with sound (or logical) protocol. MAKE WAVES - this is your son's life!
