Hi Professor, do you have any thoughts on Barbri's Law Preview course? I am considering taking their 6-day in-person course. I have heard mixed reviews about it. I have done a lot of reading and practicing on my own; do you think my "self-study" is sufficient or should I go with their program? It's quite expensive... All the best.

I strongly recommend a law preview course, though I haven’t investigated their course in depth. I just went to their website and looked at it. There’s a lot there, but what is missing-at least I don’t see it-is a robust segment on exam taking skills. Just make sure that you begin developing exam taking skills soon. If you take the course, look for practice exams once you complete one of their courses. I do think that their course introductions are a great idea.

As much fun as I have advocating for myself, fighting for accommodations is about the last thing I’d want to spend time on as a 1L (then again, LSAC still illegally flags LSAT results with accommodations so it’s not like I’m not used to the deck being squarely stacked against me from the beginning).

I suggest a two prong approach: the law and exam skills. For the law, pick one topic and purchase a concise hornbook. Torts tends to be an easier topic, so I recommend the "Understanding Torts" concise hornbook by Diamond. In preparing for law school exams, I recommend "Writing Essay Exams to Succeed" by Dernbach.

Can I get student loans to finance ALL expenses? Including rent, utilities, food, etc in addition to tuition and books?
@Learnlawbetter5 жыл бұрын
Generally yes, but it depends. Students fill out a federal form and the financial aid department will determine how much in loans a student can take out. For the poor, yes, they can borrow money for all tuition and living expenses. This is why some law students are graduating with over $400,000 in student debt. Very hard to pay that kind of debt back.

In the United States, law school is a graduate program. Not too many international students get into US law schools. But you might have a better chance of getting into a US law school if you earn a college degree in the US. And to get into one of the T3, as you want, you will need almost a perfect GPA in college and close to a 180 LSAT score. Keep in mind, less that 1% of all law school graduates attend one of these three law schools--they are very competitive.

What is a scope for international student who already have a bachelor degree in law(from home country) and wants to practice in America ?
@Learnlawbetter4 жыл бұрын
It's complicated, depending on where in the US you want to practice. This is because each of our 50 States regulates the practice of law--there is no one approach for foreign lawyers. For example, in some States your foreign degree makes no difference and you would have to earn the JD degree. In fact, one student I taught last semester is a lawyer back in Europe, and she is pursuing her JD in the US. Some States require you to earn a one year LLM and then take the bar exam. And a few, will allow you to practice law. However, keep in mind that anything short of earning an American JD might mean few to no job opportunities, other than starting your own firm.

I am still confused about what should I do for note-taking. Do I take notes before the lecture or after the lecture? Also, do I have to write all the cases separately on a book or do I incorporate it into my regular notes? I have a habit of taking mini notes on a book while in class and then I put everything together at the end of class or the week, but I am far behind note-taking for around 3 classes. Would love to get some advice from you.

After class, what you need to do is place the law from that class into a rule outline. No need to revise the facts from a case if you got that wrong. Also, jot down any exam tips provided by the prof. You don’t need too many notes before class, other than your case briefs.

@Learnlawbetter4 жыл бұрын
Law students in the US learn through case books and treatises. A case book provides edited appellate decisions, which explain a minor point of law. Then through the semester students put the pieces together to understand a broad topic. Then we also have treatises, which some faculty, like me, assign to students. When teaching Torts I assign "Understanding Torts" by Diamond. The "Understanding" series provides a good explanation of the law on a particular topic.
