Good luck with your exam prep. Remember my videos are of my own practice sessions when I was preparing for the exams. While I try to be accurate, I don't consider them tutorials, since I was learning the material myself at the time.

I’ve enjoyed doing the RHCSA so far and about a 1/4 way through but I don’t think I’ll actually take the exam as on Indeed searches it isn’t popular at all in the UK. Thanks for this informative video though. I really like how practical RHCSA is, much better than CCNA. Are there any other practical exams like RHCSA/RHCE?

The Red Hat exams are the only ones I know that are practical exams for Linux technologies. I'm sure there are good things to learn from the LPIC exams and others. My preference is with the practical exams, since I tend to think better when doing rather than when playing question trivia :)

I went on the red hat website to look for the exam objectives but did not find anything as detailed as what you are saying. Also I took the free skills assessment they provide and wanted to get the training for RH124 course and the price is $3400.00 us dollars. Who can afford that? I am thinking of just buying the Red Hat RHCSA 9 Cert Guide EX200 by Sander Van Vugt book. Is all the info I need to learn in that book in your opinion. Thank you for the great videos.

Thank you! Always remember the goal is to acquire the skills. Certifications (usually) provide a curriculum or objectives to follow so you learn skills in an efficient, meaningful manner. Earning the certification is the added bonus, since the real goal is to get the skills. With that out of the way, the real questions to answer are "What do you want to do (for your job/career), and what skills to I need to land the position I want?" Answering that may or may not reveal a certification path that can help guide you to the skills. "Network administrator" has varied meanings depending on the context and size of the business, so I can't give you a clear answer, but again, focus on the skills you need to do the things you want.

Agreed. Since Red Hat’s developer program is free, I’d go ahead and just use a RHEL 8 VM for your studies. I didn’t discover the dev program until later in my learning.

The LPI essentials is a good place to start

I did LPI Linux Essentials before RHCSA, but that was more out of a "I wanted a credential in something." You don't *have* to start there, but if you are truly "absolutely new, never touched a Linux distribution ever," it would be a good starting point. Remember the goal of RHCSA or any other cert: Chase the skills, rather than the cert. Look at the objectives covered for a certification, and if those are the skills you want (need) to learn, then learn them and at the end take the exam to get a credential.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with virtualization options for Mac since the shift to their ARM architecture. If you have an old computer around, you could probably install Fedora (or RHEL from the Red Hat Developer Subscription) or another distro and get KVM going to run some RHEL VMs to practice.

I'm well, and thanks for the question. I just checked for RHCSA, and it isn't clear. It looks like the Red Hat training courses are for RHEL 9, so I would assume the exam is too. I'd suggest contacting Red Hat to make sure though.

At this point (June 2022), I would consider just getting RHEL as a part of a free developer subscription. That way you're preparing for the exam on the exact OS that you'll be using. If you want to go to the CentOS route, I'd probably use Stream, since that's the future of the project.

It depends on what you want to do. Are you wanting to do systems administration, development, use Linux as a general desktop computer environment, etc?

Yes. I used Linux Academy (now A Cloud Guru) as my initial and primary method of study. After that I went through the Sander Van Vugt book as a review. As a final prep, I went through all of the posted objectives from Red Hat (see my practice session playlist kzbin.info/aero/PLgYy5YCbiYbHh1ST5__ffj99eAjVfAwgy) I know Red Hat offers its own training, and I'm sure there are other online RHCSA resources other than Linux Academy. As far as what it will take to "get you ready," that's specific to you. I would think for the average person, simply watching online content won't be enough. You'll need to practice the content you've watched until you become familiar with it.

That's a good question. I'd say the answer is "it depends." If you're a person who has zero experience administering Linux (particularly RHEL-based) systems, then I would say RHCSA is worth pursuing. While, I have yet to work in a 100% commited-to-the-devops-mindset environment, I would say if you're wanting to work in said environment working with infrastructure, you want to have a good system administration background. RHCSA is one way to start building that background.

Thanks for watching! I think the RHCSA is good for gaining some fundamental knowledge. I did the LPI Linux Essentials a while ago just to see if could pass *something.* After that I chose RHCSA because it aligned with my interest (Red Hat ecosystem) and the exam is hands-on rather than multiple guess. I wouldn't consider LPIC-1 a prereq for RHCSA as they're testing different things. From what I've seen LPIC strives to be vendor-agnostic, where as RHCSA is specific to doing things with RHEL; however, many of the fundamentals are just that fundamentals (such as LVM functions the same on RHEL, Debian, etc.). It *seems* the Red Hat certs are a bit more respected because you have to do hands-on stuff, but I can say from personal experience that I have not been offered a job simply because I have two Red Hat certs. I think in the end you should look at the objective sets for each exam and ask youself which aligns better with your learning goals.

Just wanted to ask: I would like to become devops one day (all I have is some not serious experience in programming) I learned some stuff about networking (subnetting, tcp/ip, http, udp, tftp and so on... just scratched the serfice) And I began to put all my effort to pass CCNA, but someone on the internet said that to get the job as a beginner in 2021 in that feild you should know at least something about networks (ip adresses, mac adress, subnetting, tcp/ip and so on, osi model) but what you really shoudl focus on is this Red Hat exam. Is that right? They essentially said learn Red Hat and Clouds and you will get a job. Sry for my english.(Haven't practised it for a while 😁) I think you'll get what I mean. And hi from Russia 🇷🇺👌🏻

Thanks for watching and for the compliment. I, myself, am slowly moving to more "devops" roles. I use quotes around devops, as it's more of a mindset than a job. In my experience as a system administrator having some fundamental knowledge of networking is always a good thing. As far as Red Hat is concerned, I think you could argue RHCE is more geared toward "DevOps" since it's mainly focused on Ansible as of RHEL 8, and to earn the RHCE cert you must pass RHCSA. I'd say becoming familiar with AWS and Azure is becoming (if not already) more of an essential skill needed for today's system administrator. Both of which are on my list to learn about. As far as distributions, Ubuntu has a good bit of market share and if you were starting at nothing, it may make more sense to start there. I chose the Red Hat exams, as it gave me a curriculum to follow; though, I haven't decided if I'll pursue more after RHCE.
