Preparing for winter at my off- grid homestead!

Building a Dream

Building a Dream

Күн бұрын

I have finally started my solo off-grid shipping container home build and I could not be more excited!
In the last month, I finished building my own house foundations for under $6k when I was quoted $60k for contractors to do it, I installed a concrete shed slab myself for under $4k, I got the SHIPPING CONTAINERS delivered and placed on the footings I built, and I got the jetty posts in my dam all before winter hit!
This week I had the massive job of clearing my land because I live in a high fire risk zone, this included cleaning and maintenance on my chainsaw, wood splitting and felling my first trees! (which were also all dead trees)
I have recently moved across the country due to the housing crisis and bought an off-grid property with the dream to build my own container house.
I became an owner builder and after 8 months of design and planning I was approved to build my own home in Western Australia.
Subscribe to my channel to watch me build my shipping container home and off grid dream homestead!

It's very brave of you to post your successes and failures so honestly. You seem to be incredibly authentic and quite stoically separated from your ego...I love that. It's a valuable lesson we could all learn from. Amazing progress....but please treat yourself to a new chainsaw

Hi Jasmin, As a qualled mechanic, I was very impressed with your chainsaw maintenance. Before you use it again, pull the spark plug out and give it a clean. Two strokes always foul up plugs easily. This will also help with starting. If you have moved the chain bar out as far as you can and the chain still comes loose, it’s time to replace the chain as they stretch. I do a large angle wedge cut on the side of the tree, where I want it to fall. Then a small angle wedge on the other side, the chain won’t get caught on the tree. I clean my chainsaw with petrol, then give it a good coat of oil. Lastly haha!! How good does jarah smell while it’s burning, beautiful. Cheers mouse

A sharp chain is a safe chain. Buy a couple of spare chains and a 12 volt electric chain sharpener. Spark plugs are cheap to have spare too . These couple of things will totally change your chainsaw game . Cut your wedge on the back side of the direction of fall . Finally!!!!!! Throw that saw and get a Stihl. You will thank me later and you'll also keep all your body parts 😂😂 Otherwise you are doing great things and it's great to watch 😉.

I guess someone mentioned it already, but you are supposed to cut the wedge on the side were you want the tree to go - which is ideally same direction where the tree is leaning to - because otherwise you need convincing arguments to make him fall where you want him to go… Other than that pretty brave to just give it a go…

Yep like others have pointed out, you cut the hinge (wedge) on the back and not on the front. Also should have the hinge cut from the top down and from below up to help stop some of the kick backwards. You should be finishing the cut from the back to the direction you want it to fall so it is not pinching the chainsaw and stopping you from making a clean getaway 🙂 Kudos to you for giving it a go.

The 70° top angle isn't super important, but as others have said, notch cut in the direction of intended fall, then the final cut. For bigger trees, have a wedge or 2 and a hammer on hand to give it that start once the cuts are done. Keep at it, you're doing a bonza job there.

G’day Jasmin, I was reading some of the comments people have posted on your video … What l saw was quite rude and offensive, you are giving it a go, which in itself is very impressive. Please don’t take it to heart too much, KZbin can be cruel sometimes. I’ve made a few comments on your videos and I definitely appreciate your feedback. First of all, great video because of the genuine effort and fortitude that you show every week, giving us a glimpse inside of your life. I feel that you are sometimes way to hard on yourself for lack of knowledge and just general mistakes that we as humans are always gonna make regardless of the tasks that we undertake....keep in mind, you are just learning a bunch of new things and faults will be had!!! Most people either can't or would not do some of the things that you undertake and complete. The fuel issue with the chainsaw is likely due to dry rotted fuel lines running to and from the carburetor. If the primer bulb is not pulling fuel to circulate through just remove the air filter housing first and inspect the fuel lines attached to the carb and then look inside the fuel tank and inspect them there to make SURE the fuel filter inside the tank is clear and properly attached to the end of the line(sounds like a daunting task but I know you are fully capable!!!) Sorry for the rambling!!! Blessings and good fortune on your upcoming endeavors!!!

Hey Jasmine I think you’re doing great. Cutting hardwood and deadwood is tough going on the best of days. look at the way the tree sits and if it leans one way it’s probably the best way to drop it. Cut the wedge on the opposite side ya want to drop it and make your last cut on the back side. If you replace your saw see if they will throw it a spare chain and buy some good chain bar oil and maybe some chainsaw chaps to protect your legs. Good job cleaning the saw🤙

Get yourself an electric chainsaw sharpener and some extra blades. Count the links or take it with you to a shop and get some spares. Look up Linishing or dressing the bar too, you can get fancy tools to do it. It is basically flattening that bar where the chain sits so it doesn't wobble side to side. A nice dressed bar and sharp chain will go through Jarrah no problem.

Hey Jasmine, love your effort and tenacity with the way that you approach life/jobs etc. Have a go at anything and everything... Great job felling the trees mate. Firewood for a long time to keep you and the doggo's warm during winter. As you have probably already been told, try cutting the hinge joint on the side that you want the tree to fall. Then cut the back cut on the opposite side. My heart was in my throat watching you cutting a couple of them down. But luckily you survived. LOL. There are some great tutorial video's on the Tube which give excellent advice and tips for felling trees, chainsaw maintenance and sharpening etc. Best of luck and look forward to next weeks instalment. Gday Jas, couple of tips for your chainsaw maintenance, brake cleaner does work wonders for your initial clean, use that first (after brushing out the loose think as you already did). It will essentially dissolve and cut through a lot of the gunk (which is usually a mix of wood dust and the chain and bar oil, makes a paste), if there's still a bit left over, you can brush over it with petrol. Use the WD40 for your final clean as that will give you a final plush as well as lubricate all the moving parts, its more of a lubricant than a cleaning solvent but if it's all you have it'll work 😅 It might cost a bit but I'd also highly recommend purchasing a set of chainsaw chaps. Theyre not cheap but if push comes to shove and something does go wrong, they will 100% save you from losing a limb. Only discovered your channel tonight and I'm loving what you're doing so far. Keep it up and Im looking forward to seeing more from you 😁

The chain sounds dry so needs chain oil put in it, sounds like air filter could be blocked too. Those scarf cuts you're doing are quite big and angle cuts with hardwood will blunt the chain quickly along with no lubrication. You're doing well though keep smashing it. Once the scarf cuts are in the right side you'll be sweet

Great efforts 👍. As others have said all the correct cuts just backwards on the tree. Notch in the direction you want it to fall and the cut at the back to fell it. That way the tree lifts off the saw as you finish the cut rather then getting pinched as the tree falls onto the bar. Few hours of guilty of treason on youtube will set you right. I think the chain is super blunt and is getting very hot so keeps going loose, tensioner is also probably worn given the condition of the saw.

Just as a bit of info you need to cut the scarf (or the 70deg angle as you called it) on the exact side you want to fell the tree then come in from the back side and cut your felling cut so the tree falls away from you and not jam the chain saw Also defiantly need to look at sharpening the chain, that is normally done multiple times during the cutting exercise soon as you feel it start to get a bit blunt. If you talk to the team at your local saw shop or hardware store they will give you tips on sharpening the chain, you really should sharpen the chain in a specific side and only push the the file one way with the same amount of file strokes each time. Love what you are doing though good on you!!

no worries I was a tree lopper in a previous life. Also if you haven't already got a new chain saw Stihl are one of the best, they are all cantankerous at times but I have found Stihl are on the better side. Regarding the sharpening it's hard to put into words here but you will understand once someone shows you. Good luck with it all and I look forward to seeing the build unfold each week.

I would put myself in the class of pruner/campfire wood collector… the best thing I bought was a tungsten chain and a shorter bar (went from a 18 down to a 12) and got a FULL CHISEL tungsten and been hammering that blade without the need to sharpen. Used a drill with a socket attachment to crank down the bolts. Make sure blade is locked down hard. It can be a sign of a blunt chain also. Battery chainsaws are much much better than petrol. Same goes for brush cutters w 58v batteries. They also have extended branch cutting accessories. AEG are very good and i have used for years with little to no problems 💚 Davitt

Good start !!! Just read the chips coming off of your cut, if it is literal dust-grains, the chain is either backwards or dull. You will want small chips, like 4-8mm pieces, and loads of them, fast. also, it seems your not using chain-oil at all, and that goes a long way with a sharp chain to keep the cut cold. These rotten trees actually are particularly hard to do safely, but you did GOOD !

Yeah I'd recommend it. Depends on your budget, small saw for doing clean up work like your doing here. lighter and more nimble to use, then a bigger saw for the milling. Milling timber is a bit of work for a saw so you want something with a bit of grunt and of good quality.

You should probably investigate a servicing kit for your chainsaw. The kit will include a new fuel strainer, it goes inside the fuel tank, on the end of the fuel pickup hose. replacing that will end your starting, running for a short time and then stopping problem. Yep just like everyone else says, you're cutting your scarf, the 70 degree wedge on the wrong side of the tree.

double check you have the chain on the right way, it seems not to be cutting very good and that is a sign the chain is on backwards. your hinge cut should be where you want the tree to fall. your back cut is the one that helps the tree fall. the reason your chain blade gets trapped is becuase the weight of the tree is on the backcut and not on the hinge cut

Good Job. The saw could definitely use a good tune up and a new chain. That's just the reality of owning chainsaws. If they sit too long they can be a pain in the butt to get working right. The wedge should be cut on the side you want the tree to fall in. then cut straight in from the back making sure you leave a little bit of the wood in place to act as a hinge and keep the tree from rolling or flying back.

Hi Jaz, great to see the chainsaw work you're doing. The jarrah looks like some ironbark we have. Absolute bear to get through especially when dried/dead. 1. Face cut the direction you want it to fall. Gets really dangerous with the big trees. 2. Top up the chain oil 3. Grab a spare chain so you can see what some fresh teeth look like. You want shavings not sawdust. 4. A smaller bar/chain for the same cc's saw will get you a bit more torque and speed. P.s. bushranger 5210 is a great $400 saw for light to medium duty stuff. Cheers!
