Your guide is Journeyman Falconer Joanne Bentley, a practitioner with fifteen years experience in the handling and schooling of raptors, and her young assistant Leah Danielle, herself a student of the Art intent on deepening her understanding of the (at least) 8000+ year-old practice.
With light-hearted humour, and a gentle, informational approach to conveying the techniques of “winning” one’s Feathered-companion into first working with us, then for the eye of the camera, Jo and Leah’s desire is to inspire established and new participants, wildlife enthusiasts, birders, and the wider public to inform and teach humanity about the intangible “living human-heritage” which every one of us may lay claim to through the Art of Falconry.
Thank you for watching!

i was just wondering how long is a "short" training session ?
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! It really depends on the workout. If we're doing short sprints from A to B with the falcons on the line coming into the lure, it will take about 20-30 minutes. Same with Mohave the hawk if he's flying A to B (tree/perch to glove). It takes an hour or two to give everyone a workout in that case. Longer sessions are when the falcons or Mohave is free flying, which means giving them longer time in the air, short rest period, then going again. Theoretically you could give Mohave a workout similar to the one in today's episode lasting as long as a couple hours of walking through the trees, walking away and calling him to the glove. I hope that answers your question! :) -leah

Good afternoon Bird Lover; Thanks so much for the great question. Ideally, 15 - 20 minutes is a solid workout, (particularly for a buzzard or hawk), and under an hour for a falcon, (this allows wiggle room for rest-periods between multiple flights to the lure). Intense, exciting/challenging, "stimulating" workouts get you *_waaaaaay_* further down the road with your Feathered-companion than exhaustive, belaboured ones, especially if you're working with owls, (who have *notoriously* short attention spans for all their intellect). Just as we become bored with our own visits to the gym, and benefit tremendously from multiple opportunities to challenge ourselves, so too do raptorial birds. They're intelligent, self-possessed beings, so "same-old, same-old" is destined for staleness - quickly. Try to keep things as interesting for _you_ as you want it to be for your companion; for example, instead of plain old 'jump-ups', try variations like our "long jump-ups" where your hawk or buzzard has to push higher and higher to come to your gauntlet as you steadily work up a flight of stairs, (naturally, make sure this is a safe stairway for *both* of you to be working on/near). This gives them a "burn" in their legs similar to us doing explosive squat-jumps, or "burpies", and requires them to have to make adjustments in their flight-path, however short, to get to your glove). If you've still got your falcon on the creance in preparation for free-flying, try taking her to school-yards, parks, etc., (after the kids have gone home, or during holidays/weekends); bringing her out to the lure while working in a new environment is good for her - and you, as it'll show you just how well she's _actually_ concentrating on you/the lure when there are wonderful new things to look at/figure-out. If your long-wing is free-flying, find one or two *safe* alternative pieces of open ground for her to work out over, and take her to these locations on an irregular basis. These locations needn't be more than an hour's drive away, and it'll keep things fun and moderately fresh for _both_ of you. I hope this answers your question, Bird Lover - I'm thinking we've got a good idea here for a short series of videos on the subject! Have a great week, Jo

Very informative just what I like. I have watched so many youtube channel videos on falconry but detailed explanation like yours is what's needed. one question do you feed the little mice whole or get more flights by cutting them as I think you had 6.have a nice day.☺
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
I believe for this exercise session, she kept them whole. She will use the smallest mice to keep the food easily contained and efficient. If we are going out with quail then she cuts them into smaller pieces to have more time to workout. We will definitely do an episode on different food and the ways each of them work best for each kind of workout. Thanks! :) - Leah

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY birthday Dominic!! We wish you the very best for this upcoming year. I definitively understand how hard that is when your parents aren't supportive - we've been there! Learn as much as you possibly can in the meantime through videos, books or if anyone is in your area. It'll be such a good feeling when you get there!! We know you can do it, please let us know if we can point you towards any resources to study up on :) - Leah

@18:21 whats the purpose of the blue paracords on the legs?
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Good evening cleophus jones; Thank you for the question; those are flying jesses (ie: no loop on the end which can - _potentially_ - snag on a broken branch, etc.). As mentioned in earlier episodes, the blue or green paracord flying jesses are also ideal for film/television work as they're easier to rub out in post-production. Best, Jo
