First of all Bear, anything Kenwood, freakin awesome dude. Kenwoods are very robust and as far as price is concerned you pretty much have to ask yourself what is your life worth. They’re a lot of great systems out there yeasu makes some great radios and yes, even baofeng makes some great radios. As a ham and storm spotter/ emcomm team member here in Alabama, what I look for in my contingency and emergency communications apparatus is something that is darn near bombproof. I want water and dust proof equipment so that as I operate in the wilds I don’t have to worry about my equipment getting wet or dropped. I know yeasu make some ht radios that fit that bill as does baofeng, kenwood and I’m pretty sure Icom does as well. Get the best you can afford and rock it all day. As with anything dealing with radios, spend your money on your antennas. Even a crappy uv5r rocks with a good antenna. Don’t get me wrong, I have several uv5r radios and use them regularly but I also have some much better radios (handheld) that I would rather use. I would suggest to people buying commercial radios such as the kenwood you currently have, guard your freq absolutely. Do not give your operating freq to anyone, even if you are working together, as that is your primary during a major SHTF for your core group. If I have you freq, I can program a uv5r to operate on you channels and can glean all the info. As for getting licensed to use ham, dude any monkey can pass that test. I have a license and I am living proof that GOD has a since of humor. Do talk about it, just do it. You will definitely need to practice with your equipment and talk to your comms about setting up your own repeater system for your group. It can be a temp system as long as you are following at the very least, the national band plan, you should be okay legally. But at any rate, that would be something that would go online fully in an emergency and we both know that all bets are off then. I would also recommend getting a hf rig for long range comms and news from the outside.

You can get those Kenwood's on eBay pretty cheap these days. Gotta program them yourself. But yes the model you have Bear is UHF " ultra high frequency" Kenwood makes very tough stuff but those baofengs aren't bad, pretty tough. You can even find water resistant models. Just look on eBay. The kenwood tk3400 cannot be encrypted. It has what it s called tone squelch, which stops you from hearing others that are talking on the same frequency, but not the other way around. A wideband UHF FM receiver, like the ones found on mobile radios, can listen to them.

Some useful info here for novices. However, let's get some shit straight. Privacy codes on digital is not encrypted in the least. I'm pretty sure there's radios that scan those codes just like they scan PL tones. It's a great start though, I'd use it. I'm guessing you're talking about GMRS radios. Cell phones are a huge comm-sec issue. You give away your position just by turning it on. So it'd be fine in crowded places but not when in camp. I keep a cell phone holder on my rig for sure it's a no-brainer. VHF and UHF are great tools but really, it's easy as hell to jam and you can be located very quickly. Modern direction finding gear is pretty slick shit. But I def keep it around and use it until you cannot. In fact I'd suggest having a mobile setup with cross band repeat and a Yagi pointed to your home repeater. If you want to use VHF then you need to make good friends with a radio club with a repeater. HF, learn it. Seriously, learn it. Have someone else handle it you don't have time. NVIS scatter is not jammable and not DF-able. Digital on HF is a PITA but worth figuring out. Winlink is email via radio which you could encrypt with GPG. Not an easy field solution but a dedicated radio team could pull it off. I have two BaoFeng UV5R's and they are great for practicing since I'm not attached to them.They are not legal for FRS or GMRS, but hey they do Tx on those freqs. I'm working on this content on my channel but it's a lot of work while having a regular job. Best wishes, get on Odysee please, YT is commie bullshit. P.S. CB radios are a great resource for getting intelligence. Truckers are all the fuck over the country and many are patriots. I suggest learning how to deploy a dipole antenna from a tree or something, b/c you won't get shit for range with that rubber duck antenna.

Thing about THAT model Kenwood is once you drop below 450 MHz on it, the sensitivity and RF output power starts to tank somewhat significantly and you will have to do some internal retuning if you dare go that far.. If it been an older model with more featured like IDK a TK-280/380G series or a newer NXDN model then it will ride down into ham just fine. Not saying it will not work because it will, it just will not work as good. I mean with those Kenwoods you are better off having GMRS programmed into them because the TK-3400U has (or should still have grandfathered) dual certifications (part 90 and 95) and 462/467 is withing the spec of the radio and will operate happily there.

What would your opinion be on a sat phone? Would they be reliable to you? Also non electronic forms if communication, maybe using lights signal for like morse code if you and your group are or plan to train in that? Also maybe for emergencies, a flare gun would be a good option? For a funny, maybe you could train carrier pigeons/hawks haha. Ive also read up on the use of hamm code that was used back in WW2 era. Basically you get two of the same type of dictionary and the way it works, the dictionaries pages have 4 columns of words, 2 on one page two on the page next to it, columns A,B,C and D. You would need the page number, column letter, and number of words down in that column, for example Breach may be 35,C,42 Page 35, column C and the 42nd word down. You can write several words like that down, and the correspondant with the same dictionary, can trace those codes to find the words, a long but decent way of communicating while concealed as many people now a days dont use that form of communication anymore. And with phones now a days, you can maybe text messages to each other if service permits. No body in government is going to really readily identify that type of coding and even if so, they wont know what kind of dictionary youve used so it could take an eavesdropper a good while to crack that code, back then it was more decipherable because there werent as many types of dictionary out as there is now. You could also implement similar stuff using like wise text such as a bible etc.

@Elfnetdesigns4 жыл бұрын
Kenwood Protalk is not an encryption capable radio. What you have is the CTCSS / DCS (PL/DPL) codes set up, that is not encryption. Encryption would be like DES / DES-XL, AES, voice inversion, etc.. Protalk can be programmed to work on a repeater if you specify the parameters when you buy the radios. Motorola HT750/850/1250/1550 are the same series (CDM series) and are newer than the HT1000 series (Jedi Series). Most Baofengs are also not encryption capable radios and encryption is not allowed on ham radio bands at all. Some of the commercial series may have low tier voice inversion like the HYT TC320 has. Our radios are Motorola MTS2000 Flashports with DES-XL encryption boards installed, public service speaker mics and throat mics, a few of the 6 unit gang chargers and spare batteries, which are Jedi Series radios. We opted for those because literally they are under $30 ea on ebay without the DES-XL boards in them(that s another $30 or so) so yeah very low cost and name branded and sellers usually program them for you though we invested in our own programming gear for a wide range of radios. We have a commercial repeater also on a 500 foot tower. ALL radios that are not license by rule require an active FCC license in order to be operated legally Cell phones still have a WIDE range of uses even without service..

They are going for around $300 on Ebay. Also you can create a sheet of number codes that hide the meanings of your messages. These can be complex or simple depending on your need. You can create a few and change them peiodically so they are harder to code break.

Recharging is very important in shtf power down. Keep high Mah rechargable batts and solar collectors to charge. EMP will fry vhf-uhf repeator sites, then it will only be line by site. Another option is cb radios that offer upper & lower sideband and capable of going down past channel 1 or past 40. Such channels are not allocated for cb. But the frequencies are smaller bandwidth and your signal can travel far when on for example freq 26.915 in lsb mode. Not everybody have cb radios with extra band capbilities. Never transmit on regular cb freqs. You can be found quickly by other cb's running their receive signal gain very low indicating stronger sig as they get closer. Same in ham radios

Sir, I love watching your videos. I am from Sweden and I am fearing that a civil war will break out, I am not fearing Russia but instead my own people and the... things that they are bringing into my country. I am born and raised out on the countryside, we have shit gun laws and no rights to protect ourselves (we get thrown in jail if we protect ourselves or our family). What do you think is good things to invest in and do in case war breaks out? Thanks.
@AnythingOutdoorswithSteve5 жыл бұрын
Sweden is beautiful countryside, but this thing attacking us seems world wide. It really does appear to be something to tear us all down so it can be rebuilt as a one world organization. All is unfortunate because I hardly doubt they will allow civil liberties and freedoms that America was built on and giving away daily. Rant aside, it all depends on what is "legal" ( politicians opinion of the day) in your area. I would love to say take it to the limit of legal allowances, but those items are also on the next chopping block. That just means a large investment that may be a large monetary loss. I always say for defense, prepare for reality. If it comes to it, what is the likelihood of survival for a battle, what is needed and maybe quadruple it. I tend to take things to the extreme which leaves less money for things that may be more desirable like additional food. Weapons are great, but if it is an ambush, you are (I am in this as well) probably not going to make it. (perimeter defense helps) If you survive you may gain additional defense tools. People are key tonall of it though. Can't make a go at it alone.

The Baofeng's really work great, and have lots of features. I have owned 20 or 30 over the years. The problem with them is that they break on you. Most last me less than a year. Hence, better have lots of spares if you go that direction. The kenwood's you mention are good radios. I would also suggest the Motorola mobile CDM1550's. These are designed for installation in a car, and were an extremely popular police radio. Hence you can get them in police surplus auctions for next to nothing, and have a local HAM guy reprogram for frequencies that are legal for you. With any of these options, you really want to get your HAM Technician license. With any of these radios you are limited to a few miles barefoot, and maybe 10-15 miles if you have access to a repeater. This points to the need to really move on the HF radios, which will allow you to start talking or monitoring across the state, the nation, or if you are good, even around the world. Technician license is very easy to get, and the questions and answers are online. You can prep for the test with a few hours of study. KF5ZBY

Don't forget that 6 meter is open to tech as well, Can't forget the magic band.

@@Prepologyblog Yep, done a little work on 6 meter, and with it were open more often. Once you get Technician, a General is not that hard, and a couple of weeks of study will do it for more people. The good thing about General class is you can break out of your neighborhood and really reach out a long way. I think it would be invaluable to be able to hear what is going on in different parts of the country when other forms of communication are down.

@@ExtremePrepper Yes every group should have a general or two but preferably an extra.

@@Prepologyblog @ElectroGaming Yes, I got my Extra, and enjoy having those extra bands with less traffic. So many times the contesters are chewing up so much of the General band that it is hard to find space to talk. I think if it came down to really needing it, the contesting would settle down immensely.

Hey Paul, you know by just giving your callsign that you gave your name and cordinates. Im a amateur extra, havent been active in a while other hobbies got in way. Be careful with callsigns on forums. Ppl can pinpoint your location easy. 73's brother

The problem I'm having is attempting to communicate with people on the same frequency but using a different ctcss dcs codes. Is there a universal tone for militia/ prepper groups?

Communication is key to success along with a plan and a team. Unless your John Rambo. I like a team better than a dream. 👍🏻

I sent TJ an email with some notes and contact info. I've been a ham since 1983 and a prepper about the same amount of time. I have the experience of a couple of hurricanes and other stuff to bring to the table. Station is 100% off-grid solar. Solar charges all the batteries. I'm not TAQTIQAL with camo-painted radios :) The CB radios with some real wire antennas would be very useful for longer distances when you don't have repeaters and other infrastructure. Topics he and I can discuss and he can shoot a video for the rest of the class.

Something that might be worth exploring is that cell phone has programs that can be used to use them to communicate over a wifi network. Wifi has built in encryption and security, and there are portable routers. Another low tech solution is field phones, or even old fashioned wired phones.

You do got good info, and condor is ok on a budget but it is pretty junky and breaks easier the non airsoft stuff. Going from condor to higher quality real steel brands you see the difference. Condor is marketed to kids in airsoft so that's why its more affordable. Its not trash but keep in mind that.

I have to ask...what is the range of the different comms. I am wondering "real world" numbers, which a lot of times I have a problem locating fake world specs ( on glass water with a mirror over head and a 30mph tail wind and the flux lines of Venus running parallel to earths). Yes mountain dew does hydrate to the max and is infused with everything the body needs.

the baofeng is half to one mile line of site without repeaters using the standard antenna in mild terrain; the kenwoods are double that.

I work for a major Railroad…we have expensive handhelds Motorola,& I com .. I understand radios very well….. handheld to handheld you are not talking dozens of miles depending upon weather antennas postitions. Battery strengths they are very good 1-2 miles outside of that 🙏 & hope your ideas are solid but civilian Comms are a big problem for SHTF preppers
