The MLA30 antenna is a directional antenna. Picture the loop being a scope. It will only pickup what you can see through the loop. Everything else is pretty much ignored. That radio station that used to "boom" in, might not be seen by the antenna. Rotate it around and see if you can get it tuned in better.

@@plhebel1 The problem is, ham radio in general seems to be dying out. There was a time when setting up everything and talking to someone hundreds or thousands of miles away was amazing and exciting....until the Internet and smartphones made that routine. I had a little Magnavox shortwave radio back in the 90s that I was able to pick up HCJB on, and it blew my mind back then. Of course, the Internet makes Web SDRs possible and any kind of radio is going to be simpler to set up to broadcast to people (all you need is a transmitter and all they need is a receiver, unlike the complex Internet and Cellular infrastructure people take for granted).

While the international shortwave broadcasting has been sharply curtailed there are still few. Radio New Zealand comes in well in the evening and early morning. The BBC has one or two frequencies. But the real activity is private American shortwave stations such as WBCQ, WRNO. WCWW and others. Most of the programming is Christian religious programming, but there are some music programs too. Some overseas airlines use HF SSB. My favorite frequencies are 1600-1700 kHz above the old AM broadcast band where there are a few stations that have music programs. And of course, there is WSM the Grand Ole Opry operating clear channel on 650 kHz, for people who like all kinds music, country AND western.

Is there an am/shortwave antenna that will work for this? Something I can carry in a bug out bag?

Yeah make one out of a random length of wire. Alligator clips it to the antenna

@@Iridium242 I already have long wire but it has the frayed type ends, didn’t know if it would work or not. Also do I absolutely need that or will it work with the telescoping antenna?
@-CT-SODBUSTER
@-CT-SODBUSTER 3 жыл бұрын
@@timothyparryjropen a little tiny bit of solder on each end of those frayed wires will fix that up real good or a different route you can go I have a super Slinky antenna (fleabay) which is basically exactly that, a slinky attached to two small sections of PVC with a lead wire attached to a alligator clip. On most days with that antenna I hear all kinds of activity on the shortwave and ham bands plus I can pull in regular am broadcast stations from about a 500 mi radius around my house. I live in Cleveland Ohio and can pick up stations in new York, boston, virginia, Chicago, and Ontario Canada. They only run about $20 so it's a great budget way to have something for a bug out bag

Well, for about $12 you can buy a 23’ reel antenna which you can carry in your pocket or for about $25 a youloop or for about $55 a MLA 30 that both dissemble to small or just get a piece of speaker wire and solder a bnc or alligator clip onto one end.

@@-CT-SODBUSTER As a matter of fact, I am going to do a video on making a simple wire antenna for this next week, Super easy wire with a alligator clip on the end to connect to the antenna.

I’m interested in learning and understanding everything I can about frequencies and wave bands. I believe this little baby is going to be great for my learning journey into radio. I’ll be getting the antenna that you suggested and anything else I can get to boost reception. Thank you for making this excellent and highly informative video. *Update: Where did you find the correct charger for this receiver?

I noticed that when I pugged this into a PC USB port to charge, it came up as a USB Serial device. But didn't come up as a COM port as there isn't a driver. I was wondering if this would be recognised if I Added a USB Serial (CDC) driver to this?
