As a "senior" (62YO) I think there are a couple of things you missed that older, more experienced people, can provide to a group. First, older people have seen more and have lived through more, we understand the ebbs and flows of history and can provide perspective. Second, older people can often see a way around a problem because we lived without technology and know more basic skills. Lastly, while I cannot work as hard as I did when I was twenty, i do know how to work hard and I have learned strategies to make the most of my stamina and strength. Good job on your post, thanks for thinking of us "seniors"!

73 and broke my hip in February . Thought I was well prepped . Was on the floor and could not get up to dial 911 ( live alone ) . Was on the floor for 6 hours ( 10;00 PM to 4 AM ) Prayed our father and hail Mary -no good Than a voice called me telling me I had a cell phone on the table that could be reached . Phone fell on floor and I pushed the emergency button . Ambulance arrived but could not enter the home and I could not let them in . Told them I had a key hidden under the shed - could not find it . 30 minutes later they were able to shim the door open . Gave me fentanyl and I hallucinated . Gave me opioids at the hospital and I was severely constipated -so bad I could not speak . Sent out for food and was poisoned with the chocolate milk . Than lost power (winter and I have electric heat ) . Went to the cellar for emergency wood (have 4-5 day supply ) . Started a fire in the wood stove for heat . Now going to loose all the food in the refrigerator . Have solar generators . Hurt myself lifting one up (was favoring the broken hip ) . Now have power-out for 18 hours . Two weeks later loose power again for 20 hours -still have the generator connected to the frig . Pass thru generator so when power is restored the generator gets charged -power goes out generator kicks in . Made it thru because I was prepared . Now hav a key they can find on a tree outside -Never thought I could not open the door for the paramedics . No matter how well you are prepared you always forget something . Have 2 geiger counters now . Do not want to drive myself crazy not knowing if its safe to go outside . We may have WW3 !

I remember my grandparents who lived off grid (I'm 75). My grandfather died at home from emphysema, & the only "medication" I ever saw him take was from a bottle of whiskey. He had never touched alcohol in his life, until his emphysema became severe, & never seemed bitter or complained, & I don't remember either grandparent ever going to the doctor...that was reserved for immediate life threatening events only. They worked very hard, lived off their land, bartered for things they had to obtain, & the only thing that interrupted the work that had to be done was if they couldn't lift their bodies off the bed, even with age. "Civilization" has seriously distorted our views, & It's good to remember how our ancestors lived normally. The pioneer days were even tougher. My grandma was born in the back of a covered wagon traveling from Tennesee to Texas, & her stories were mindbending as to the lack they endured...truly amazing they survived the trip & the process of resettling....faith, trust, endurance, & grit....& a shotgun.

The small town I live in sees me walking a big dog while wearing a pack over a thousand miles a year winter and summer. They see the garden, the 14 fruit trees, 20 berry bushes and grape vine. They see us in the garden. They've seen us load up to go to the range. They see a well manicured yard. They see the masonry projects and wonder how does that old couple do that. Some have noticed the knife and tomahawk target in the back yard. They talk to my wife about her herb garden and get informed about not only kitchen but medicinal herbs. I've taught some of the kids how to sharpen a knife and fillet fish. Many have heard my stories about my wife shooting a golf ball at 15 and 30 yards with a 9mm handgun. Many have had my wife's home baked and canned foods. Actually, we've encouraged more people to garden, walk and own firearms. We are not looked at as easy targets, we are valued in the community. Friday while walking the dog 3.7 miles I was invited to join them for lunch by two groups, one of town workers, the other at the bank. My advice, stay active and visible.

It's never the disaster, it's the aftermath, during the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, no water and no power for months killed over 3k people, I took care of my mother, father and special needs brother for half a year without power and months without water, I survived on rain water I collected with a tarp and large wheelbarrow, water went through a sediment filter then to my Berkey filters, we had enough canned food stored and all cooking was done in our everyday propane stove...Today my parents are with me anymore, but I still take care of my special needs brother. Today I produce my own power and water and I can literally fabricate anything off grid, I also produce thousands of pounds of food on property, I'm 54.

Besides a earthquake, volcano eruption or asteroid strike, the aftermath will always be worse, I saw people going to the creek behind the house to drink water, no filters no nothing...I gave all my bottled water to these people, they had kids...Talking theory and living it is 2 completely different things.

LOL, as a Senior in my mid seventies, and a life time, mindful, frugal Prepper, I am very likely better prepared than most. Not only for self, pets and adult child and their family. I have considered all aspects of every day life, not just water and food. Many of my finds were purchased at little cost from Thrift Stores and Yard Sales, except for an inverter generator that was purchase Online factory refubished saving over $100.00 and came with free S&H and the same warrenty as a new one. No smell of oil or petrol, so obviously had never been used, just repacked. I methodically organized everything, and have enough to last, longer than my own expiration date! So, I agree with one of your posters who says that older folk are often the most well prepared. And, just because we are older, does not make us short on skills, many times the opposite its true! No need to join some kind of Prepper Group, be Self-Reliant, never depend upon others. My parents lived through two World Wars in the UK, so from the age I could walk, I was taught to prepare. My parents grew enough food to feed our family during rationing, and had enough left over to feed friends and neighbours. They kept chickens for eggs. Including the house footprint, their lot was only an eighth of an acre, and more than half was a flower garden and play area for me. We walked everywhere, or rode our bikes, except on Saturdays when we went to neighbouring towns ,to shop at local markets. After a Home Invasion, I learned how to defend myself. Do not underestimate the older generations, their skills and knowledge could likely teach you a thing or two! That said, there are still older folk who fail to keep enough food and water to last longer than two or three days, but not because they cannot afford to. There are ignorant folk in every age group, just as there are those who choose to remain in denial. Believe me, I am NOT one of them!

I am a 68 year-old woman I live alone in a senior community where it is mostly old women who are pretty much helpless. The few men who do live here are very old and decrepit. Therefore, this entire community is vulnerable to anyone who would come and try to take, our homes or anything else. The best thing we have going for us is that our community is on the lake so we have water for now to flush toilets and I only stock drinking water. I don’t stock anything else. Well food of course my biggest worry is how I’m going to, protect what I have worked so hard for without capable men to help and I can’t trust anybody either so I just have to pray that God will look out for me as He always has 🙏

I'm 66 and I started prepping in 2013 because I could see that something was wrong even back then. The people around me (yes even my children) thought that I was nuts. Today my daughter is onboard because as women we are very traditional so we do the shopping. We have a lot of mouths to feed but we've got a lot of stock as well. We germinate fruit tree seeds, we grow crops and either dehydrate or can them, we make jams, turn eggs into egg powder, etc. Some of us have an intuition that others simply don't have and I feel bad for them in one way because what they might face in the future will be extremely damning for them but they chose to live in a fake world/keeping up with the Jones's and they can't face that fact that that could go away. Thank God for those of us who had the intuition to see this world for what it is. The children from those people will be the lucky children who survive. We will take in and feed children but not the adults because you can't feed everyone.

Home made pemican, home freeze dried meat. An added bonus is that because I don't eat sugar or carbs in any form, I can go 24-or-more hours without being hungry or hangry.

All my labs are in the perfect range, my energy is great, and I don't have scurvy! We've been lied to about this for so many years that we believe it. There are tons of KZbin Carnivore videos. So glad I found you! Thankfully, my husband & I have seen this day coming for many years. We have 78 acres, are 6 miles off pavement & completely off grid. We're at the end of a valley & the total population of our valley is 8. We have solar for electricity. Fortunately we are healthy & don't need many meds. We started raising most of our food years ago because of what the gov't does to the food available commercially. We raise goats (Nigerian dwarfs) for their milk & meat. The milk these little girls give us is so sweet, with no "goaty" taste. Also, we chose the dwarf breed because, at 79 & 80 years old, I knew I couldn't handle a 150 lb goat, but I can handle a 50 to 70 lb. We also raise rabbits & chickens. Gardening, canning, dehydrating & freezing are things we've done since our kids were tiny. Since we're in an area that gets hot & has relatively mild winters, preparing is easy as the seasons change. We will be putting in a wood stove this year because we don't want to count on propane being available. We are aware of the threats that may come due to our age & the image of frailty. Predators will be surprised - not in a good way. I'm so glad you posted the link for online medical providers. Even though we can go to Mexico for some items, who knows if the borders will close down on both sides. Things are so crazy these days. Thanks so much. Take care, stay safe & watch out for the idiots.

TY for an excellent presentation. I started prepping in 1977 after the blizzard. It has helped me through other natural occurrences since. Now, at 65yo, I have found that my future needs have changed. I am blessed with good health, and I work on my physical fitness and nutritional needs. I take one enteric aspirin per day. As for violence threats, I am more aware of others in public, and my experience might help me see trouble coming sooner than those seniors that don't keep their head on a swivel. My eyes are as fresh as they use to be, so I have reduced the 1000 yard gaze to about a hundred. lol Prepping becomes a lifestyle after a while. Rotating through preps becomes fun over time, too. Great video, good thoughts. The pack that I built 10 years ago could sustain 2 people for 4 to 7 days. I still have that pack, but these days after a mile or two, it would have to be left behind. You can be in shape for your age, but your age will determine how much shape you can be in!

I agree that this is a subject that doesn't get enough press and that is a pet peeve of mine, so thanks for broaching the subject. I am an almost 68 year old wife of a 71 year old retired Air Force disabled veteran. We have been homesteading/prepping for 22 years now and sadly, no matter how much I teach on my own channel, no family members other than my two sons ever watch my content (been on YT for 12 years) and I fear others may be thinking they will depend on *us* to take care of them. 😕 I take only one scrip for hypothyroidism that I get 3 months at a time, no other health issues and am in normal weight range with good muscle tone. My husband takes several meds, has far advanced degenerative disc disease with excruciating daily pain so I have to take up the slack for what he can no longer do. I've taught about how to choose a homestead based on your future health, not your present health, thinking about the kind of house you will be able to navigate, no steep land, choosing livestock wisely for ease of maintenance, etc. We live in a rural mountain area and I would rather die than move back into the 'burbs near family, LOL. It's been our stance that we will never ask for help and always know that no one is coming to take care of things. I've had to think about what happens when marauders come to steal and pillage because I've had my life threatened and was doxxed on this platform by a lunatic who invited others to come attack me when I was doing chores. Yes, we have security cameras and are ready to defend ourselves and our animals if need be. We also have a small solar backup and a dual fuel 11W generator as well as a wood burning stove. We eat 95% animal protein and fats, including eggs from our chickens, no fast foods, eat a few vegetables that we grow ourselves, no seed oils, no vaccines. Health is definitely a prep and I keep harping on it, but I fear mostly it falls on deaf ears. I fully expect someone to show up at my door in SHTF and they need to rethink that. I am sure that most "seasoned' folks will have others who did not prepare for themselves descend on them at that time. Thanks for the video ~Cynthia, N. GA mountains

I guess I'm considered a senior in my 70s.lol Been a Rancher/ farmer all my life. Three ranches in three states. Two are operated by family. All are equipped to live life as our ancestors did 200 years ago. The Ozarks is the most extensive. Been a prepper for around 50 yrs. Then stepped it up seriously in 92. For us bugging out means staying on the property. We are connected to the grid for convenience. But also have wind and solar which feeds the grid. Won't give away all I've done but have a few suggestions. Depending on what unfolds chaos will rule. Not against generators. But if you are the only one in the neighborhood running one there will be many coming to your door to take your resources. And even if they don't you won't make it long if you run your generators frequently. You will soon run out of fuel. Making them soundproof as possible is a must. Whenever for decades you do things like putting in a thousand gallon propane tank Underground. Propane doesn't degrade like other fuels. Suggest getting a few thermal blankets to layer over your freezer and refrigerator. Do not cover the back it needs to breathe. If you plan when you open the door like once a day. They will retain their cold enough that running a generator 1 hour everyday or even every other day should be more than enough to recool freezer fridge. And even pump water if you have a well. And while it's spilling whatever water storage you have you also do cleaning. Solar panels are cheap nowadays. Less than $100 can get you as much as 300 W of 12 volt power. Also check into 12 volt refrigerators. They are also under a hundred bucks either online or at truck stops. They also have 12 volt cookers. The one that looks like a lunch box is usually under $50 and is capable of boiling water or doing small pot roasts. Both those can run off a large car/ truck battery. Obviously deep Cycles better but not necessary. If it's just the electricity off it would likely come back on. If you find your automobile doesn't start in your phone doesn't work there has been a EMP, a electromagnetic pulse. That means your electricity is not coming back on, possibly for years. Make sure you have gravity feed water filtering capability. And don't overlook the survival straws. End store some water. At least a couple weeks worth. And only use it if necessary. Any dehydrated Foods you buy like potatoes, rice.... should be repackaged in food safe watertight containers. Things like instant potatoes will pick up really bad tastes and odors if left in their boxes for bags. Stock up on self-rising flour/ sugar. That will allow you to make much bread and sweets for comfort. And by the way you don't need an oven for making bread. You can usually bake a loaf in under 5 minutes using the microwave. Check and see if there isn't a local senior center nearby. You can usually eat free there and stay cool or warm. They're all over the Ozarks. And they have Meals on Wheels for those on a fixed income. Also to take care of your lighting needs pick up some outdoor security lighting that comes with its own solar panel. They're cheap. You can put them in the windowsill to charge. 🚜🤠🐂

I agree with some of everyone's points. A huge strength that older folks have is experience. A remembrance of past history and events that could be used in similar situations. Older folks most likely are relatable and trustworthy. I think that if I'm part of a survival group, it would be a huge benefit to all to have someone old to perform contact roles. Our group may encounter another group or village and sending in someone who seems non-threatening and communicates well could be a benefit to all parties. People like that can gain and share information going back and forth between groups. Ancient native americans offen worked together with other groups and all groups valued and respected elders. Great video. 👍

I would throw younger-than-senior people with health issues in this category… I have a heart issue, along with diabetes and I’m 55 and feel my self acting as if I were over 60 at this point. I do exercise though and watch my blood sugar, so I can control it, but I still have the risks an older person would possess

Holy cow, I am considered a senior now😅 it really never occurred to me that my partner and I would need to be taken care of. I am 66, and he is 74. I always think we will be the ones helping others. You didn't mention this, but it is far more difficult for those of us who live rural to create a community. Most of us where I am at are all retired (most are retired military).

You are doing a good job in explaining prepping. I’m old and have been prepping for many years, the problem I have is my daughter does not believe in prepping. She can’t understand prepping. She wants to get me to stop saving all my and wants to get rid of my prepping material.
@prepperpublishing4 ай бұрын
This is not an uncommon challenge, family members that aren’t on board. Tell her it keeps you occupied and it acts like a hobby if that helps her stop advising against it. People should understand that prepping can be a personal benefit and something fun to do, regardless of whether a collapse happens or not.

I am 79 and subscribed, because you give good common sense, workable advice, keeping in mind that most people are of modest or even no means - thinking of working people. Your advice about community is SPOT ON! Some notes: High protein dried foods: lentils, legumes, soybeans, beans (all types), garbanzo beans - any kind of bean. Whole grain (not white) rice (many varieties). Sprouts - mung beans, alfalfa, etc. Think Wild West. Stock water. For practice: cut power for two or three weeks, and act accordingly. If possible, get basic solar system - available for about $200 from Harbor freight. Heat - wood/coal.
