These are nice radios for crisis. The European counterpart to the FRS system is called PMR446 (446Mhz) It is important to have a code list for communication because everyone can listen. It is a bad idea to share e.g. bug out location with the whole neighborhood. Nice video as always and a pleasure to watch.

My walkie talkies have 16 mile radius. And most come with manual that list channels you can use without a ham radio license. I got solar chargeable walkie talkies.

This is great advice. Keeping comms up and running during a SHTF scenario is absolutely VITAL. Retevis makes some great stuff...I will be purchasing these to replace my Motorolas. I have a pair of Baofeng hand held hams also. Invest now while you can, and while prices are still reasonable. I also bought those boots you reviewed yesterday, Iridium. Good job as always, sir!

Being able to use the rechargeable AA batteries or the standard A A alkaline batteries is a great idea.the bright neon radio color is really good.

What's your recommendation for the best value rechargable occasional use FRS radio?
@benwille66803 жыл бұрын
Remember: HT radios need to be in the upright position when in use - the antenna is not designed to be in a horizontal position. Your distance will be greatly affected by this so in future reviews I would hope that you use the vertical position when testing distance and sound quality. I greatly appreciate your reviews except that I keep buying product !

Did you say that these automatically shut off? If I want to give the second radio to someone so I can call them if I need them throughout the day, how do I ensure that their radio stays powered on the whole day?
@Iridium2423 жыл бұрын
No they dont auto turn off

@@Iridium242 Oh... thank goodness. Thank you for clarifying. Do you know what the "power saving feature" is mentioned in the manual? It says it is enabled by default.
@Iridium2423 жыл бұрын
@@eosjoe565 Many radios have this, the power saving feature will shut off the receive but not the radio AND it will come right back on the second it detects a signal. It wont shut the radio off just the receive circuit to save battery.

What mAh capacity AA batteries do they come with? I assume that you could enhance the run time by using a good quality higher capacity NiMH AA battery. Is that correct?
@Iridium2423 жыл бұрын
yup you can upgrade them to any better AA battery you want.

I would add 1 or 2 features to a radio like this. FIrst would be a remote power on feature so that when radio A calls radio B, as long as radio B has power it will turn on a beeping noise to alert of an incoming call. Second would be to make the recharge base 2 units not just one. And lastly I would love to see something that setup a repeter function that allowed devices to hop across radios to create a network so that in theory at least, radio A could send talk through radio B (but not allert it with anything more than a light turning on) and use radio B to relay to radio C further away. So that if an area is saturated with the same types of relay capable devices you could send a message miles away, for free without dealing with a cell tower at all. Maybe even use a texting device to send text instead of voice.

*repeater

Most FRS radios have a call function. Unfortunately, if they were sleeping listening to a channel, it will drain your battery faster. And, unfortunately repeaters are not allowed on FRS radios, but a GMRS license gives you access to repeaters.

You don't have to have a screwdriver to remove the backs,a coin like a nickel will also work if your out and about most don't carry a screwdriver.....
