I have been working on learning the ins and outs of "baking" bread on a stovetop and not using an oven. Today I made sourdough English muffins. They turned out wonderful! At least I will have bread when the lights go out!!

I just added an Irish Soda bread video to my St. Patrick's day playlist. I usually make it in the oven, but she made it on a hanging griddle over a fire in her kitchen cottage fireplace.

It's important to practise minimizing water consumption: wet wipes or sponge-bathing for personal hygiene; brushing teeth with less water (when I'm boondocking I manage with 4-6 oz. max); same for hair washing (less than one gallon - the method takes a little bit of forethought but can be done); NEVER running the water tap without collecting that water for later use; "if it's yellow, let it mellow" reduced toilet flushing. These are just a few ways....Practise periodically so things go more easily when you really have to watch your water consumption.

Those are good tips. Think of all of the new people who have poured into our country, in addition to food resources being tapped into, our clean water may be as well and can communities suddenly provide the clean water needed. all of the sudden we have several million more people who want water and food so having water and food stored should be started now!

That's kind, Sandy. Thanks for being such a thoughtful neighbour! I also gave garden produce to my soon-to-be 101 neighbour (she's in a home in the same city as her daughter/ relatives now), checked by almost daily to smile, wave & blow kisses to her, and shovelled her sidewalk for ~4 yrs. (all for free, of course!) Sadly, the younger folks next door did NOTHING for her, sigh. Wonder who will look out for them when THEY'RE older and their children live far away... Anyhow, thanks again for YOUR kindness to your neighbour. Cheers!

Water is so essential. I liked your tip from a year or two ago where you suggested using a large empty detergent jug (kind with push buttons) to use in the sink if the water goes out, you then have something to at least clean off a few dishes if needed. Also filling other larger bottles with water is important for flushing toilets, and remember when you need to flush, pour the water in the bowl and not the tank. We bought a rain barrel a couple of years ago because we have an evaporative cooler that uses water circulating through it and then instead of it going into the gutter and not used, we put a hose on the unit and then that water goes into the water barrel and not wasted. It's clean water and a good backup water source for gardens since our climate can be dry. Having good lighting is so important. We have solar motion detector lights on the front of our house, a couple of neighbors do as well.We noticed if there is a car comes up the street that seems to be driving slow and checking things out, when the lights come on they drive away quickly. Our Dollar Tree stores aren't well stocked lately but I do like the stick on push button lights for dark spaces without a light fixture.

Have been checking my water storage. Found that all 6 of my green camping plastic water containers had leaked out over the year. You had warned us they could leak. The square, higher priced, blue containers were still in good condition. Glad they were all in a storage room with the hot water heater where there was a drain. Thank you for all the very good basic information. You seem to be very frugal on your pick of products.

Water storage advice is something we all need -- especially to be reminded of its importance. I don't store large quantities because I live on the largest lake east of the Mississippi and have many ceramic dome filters to fit on 2 gallon buckets. Can't handle bigger buckets because of disabilities. Have one set up on the back porch now just in case public water supply has a problem. I can carry enough 2 gallon buckets from the lake to fill the commode. You just reminded me to move my filtering equipment to a more accessible place instead of under boxes in the attic.

I've got one more greenstalk to clean out and got to get a lot of dirt for the 7 new raised beds I added. It's a lot of work for this ole gal. But, worth it. Hi, A.G., good reminders about water & lights. I'm not sure if you know of this, but, apparently, a certain kind of the Tyvek home moisture barrier can apparently be used to filter water, as it filters down to a small size of particle. I don't remember if it's the cross-hatch or the straight pattern of weave. It is a one-way permeable membrane. Perhaps you could look into this (if you're seeking more topics), as a roll of this could provide for water filters for quite a few people - just cut into pieces and secure over a container to contain/ filter the water through it. (Maybe, good for churches, or close communities, apt. buildings, old folks' flats, etc. besides family. Also useful for home repairs. 🙂) Further, in places like deserts, a sheet of this material hung vertically with a collection system at the bottom, apparently works to collect the water that is condensed in the night when it's cooler. This method is apparently used by the army, and by poor folks in high deserts now. Without such a system, the moisture just evaporates when the sun comes out. Also, I've read that moss can be used to help treat water that is filtered at least by a t-shirt or something. The moss contains iodine, so, if it's placed in the bottom of a bucket with a spigot, and the water left to sit, it would at least make the water safer to drink, in a pinch. Not sure how long it would have to sit - likely at least an hour, but better than NO treatment. Some random water thoughts. Cheers! ❤

I'd like to give a suggestion for families who have a lot of mouths to feed. I've been going through my expired items for clean out and decided to use a packet of Bear Creek minestrone. I added a can of green beans and a can of beef (Hereford). I also had some frozen diced celery and onions I threw in. It's really good and filling - midway between a soup and a stew. We've had 6 bowls and there are probably 6 left. The cost per serving on this is really low.

Someone was on the way in my apartment building to throw away (recycle) their kitty litter bucket. I asked them about it and they gave it to me. I had been thinking of making a black out bag for when the power is out in addition to my solar light stash and other battery lights from IKEA. I'm going to wash it out and store emergency battery operated things in there. It's waterproof/resistant and big enough for most of my needs. I have used them for storing solar lights, cleaning supplies, and gardening supplies. They stack and have a sturdy handle. If there is a fire in my apartment building and the sprinklers go off everything will be soaked and all electronics will be too...unless they're in a waterproof/resistant bucket with a lid. That's what I'm working on this weekend. Gathering and re-arranging what I have to be efficient when I might need it. I'm still keeping the solar lights separate because they will probably need charging in my windows.

Not a pantry stock, but I have been working on my donation boxes. While scrollong through Amazon, I saw some individually wrapped toothbrushes. Also, some indivifually wrapper flossers. So I ordeted some and yhought they would be useful. Then I saw small tubes of toothpaste. I put a toothbrush, toothpaste and 7 flossers in a ziplock bag. Then I thought ... water to rinse! So I found some 8 ounce bottles of water at Walmart for just a few cents more than they were at DT if they had any ( they sell out fast). So, tomorrow I'm going to Walgreens to get some travel size packs of Kleenex to finish off my "oral care kits" to add to my boxes. I'm hoping they might fill in the gap for a few days when folks are having a hard time buying necessities.
