Also from WNC, our camp stove was priceless as was a C Crane solar radio and the battery boosts that recharged with a portable solar panel. Another item that was very much appreciated - a solar shower. Stock up on water, water, water. We had much on stock and nearly ran out by the end of 13 days of no power. If you think you need 2 gallons per person/day, double or triple that. You can give some to a neighbor in need if you have extra.

Mylar stuff (emergency blankets, ponchos, bivys) has a very limited utility. They make good heat reflectors, but if one wraps onesself in a mylar blanket, they tend to keep in moisture, as well as heat. This presents a dangerous situation. Water: Skip the LifeStraw - it's of very limited utility. A Sawyer Squeeze and a CNOC 3L water bladder will allow for pretty much endless water filtration, and can be back-flushed to keep the filter flowing. This system, plus a couple 1L Smart Water Bottles per person is a great personal water filtration solution. Another solution would be the BeFree water filter bladder - this holds 1L of water. Heavily silted water should be pre-filtered using cloth to strain out dirt, leaves, etc - this will help preserve your filter. Solar: The combination solar panel and battery bank are of limited utility, as the charging capacity of such a small panel is far outstripped by the capacity of the battery - drain that battery down to single digits, and it will take *days* for that tiny, inefficient panel to fully charge that battery. Get decent folding solar panels that put out some capacity, and don't waste your money on junk. A 40w panel can fit in the water bladder sleeve of a good backpack - a great personal capability. Larger 100w or 200w panels can be loaded in the car. Stove: For personal use - spend $17 and get a BSR-3000T stove. They're super small, weigh grams, and will heat a couple cups of water in minutes. Get a 750ml titanium pot with a lid or an 1100ml pot with a frying pan lid. Stock some of the smaller and larger butane cannisters. The BSR-3000T will run on the same butane fuel cannisters as a Coleman stove - so this is a good way to have a scalable way to cook food, boil water, etc. The personal stuff should be in one's go-bag, the larger capacity stuff stored in storage bins that can easily be placed in the trunk or back seat of a car and transported. You'll notice a trend - small, lighter items that can be carried in a bag, larger, higher-capacity items that can be transported in a vehicle. This is by design: you don't want to lose a capability because the only solution you prepared for x or y is huge and can *only* be transported in a vehicle. What happens if you have to walk out because a road or bridge got washed-out? So, it's smart to have a small, light, personal capability to do things, as well as a higher-capacity, say "family sized" capacity to do the same thing. Rechargable batteries (AA, AAA, 18650): Don't rely upon alkaline, disposable batteries. Have a solution that can be re-used and re-charged, and also have the wherewithal to recharge those batteries off-grid via USB from a solar panel. I recommend Eneloop Pro (black-label) batteries, as they have good capacity, hold a charge, and aren't trash. Try to stay away from 9v, C-cells and D-cell batteries: there are chargers that will charge AA, AAA, and 18650 batteries all on the same charger. 9v, C-Cell and D-cell batteries, due to their unique form factor, require a different charger - that's one more thing to buy that's only useful for *one* thing. When thinking about preparedness, you want to think about items that can do multiple things. Headlamps and candles: Skip the ginormous D-cell flashlight, and go with headlamps and small, mid-range lumen flashlights that have batteries that can be re-charged - see my battery recommendation above. For candles, the Uco Candle Lantern is a safer way to use candles. Use beeswax candles versus paraffin candles - they last longer. Communications: Your cell phone is only useful for communicating with the outside world if the cell towers are up or you have wifi. The existing infrastructure can and will fail in emergencies - you would be well-served by having other ways of communicating. A couple things one can do in terms of cell phones and preparedness is to scan important documents and save them as PDF files on one's phone. Download manuals and resource books like wilderness first aid books to your phone. Important to note is that WiFi calling will only work if you've previously enabled WiFi calling and entered your e-911 information while the cell network is up. This information is required before wifi-enabled calling will work with most cell phones. It's important to be able to gather information - and AM/FM/Weather-band radio with alerts function is a great solution. Again, rechargable battery capable - C-cells, D-cells, 9v batteries should be avoided. A shortwave radio could come in handy, as well; although the shortwave bands have pretty much been decimated by governmental budget cuts since the Cold War ended. Blister pack FRS/GMRS radios are not expensive and can be a resource in and around one's house/neighborhood. A GMRS license is $35 for one's entire extended family, and GMRS does have repeaters up in many areas to extend the coverage range. An Amateur radio license is another option. This requires a license test, so is maybe not a good option for folks that aren't tech savvy, but ham radio operators do a *lot* of emergency communications during disasters, and even have the means to send emails over radio and into the internet without an internet connection at the radio. Satellite communicators like Garmin InReach, Zoleo, etc. are a good resource, but these require a subscription and may be of limited utility for most people that can't afford yet another subscription. Creature comforts: Get your personal gear and your family gear sorted first - this is expensive enough. Buy quality gear that won't get shredded on it's first use. Skip the glamping gear - it's an unnecessary expenditure.

You are such a blessing to the youtube community. I appreciate you very much . I took quite some of your advice and suggestions already to action and it worked out just as you said it would. For example, using viniger when washing my cloths and dryer balls..... I have an emergency flash light I take everywhere, especially when I walk my dog . It has an alarm, multiple light strobes, a sharp object for shattering glass( I use it for self defense) , a seat belt cutter, charging outlet for phone and a magnet to stick on your fridge or car . It can be charged by solar or outlet. I have it now for multiple years, and I am very pleased with it. Keep your videos coming SIC 🙏

@Hope-ot1xy Sandy has a video explaining when doing laundry, instead of a softener to use 1/4 cup of vinegar and instead of dryer sheets to use linen dryer balls. I was skeptical regarding the vinegar but gave it a try . To my surprise, it works and I will stick with it . I can't find her video but it's there somewhere. I also do the teeth cleaning with baking soda and peroxide what was another video by Sandy. She has so much great advise and wisdom for sure .

I fill them with faucet water and can put in the Berkey or use it for gray water. I had pew pew's all my life so i'm good to go. I have some big trash cans in the garage, but i am going to get some new ones about 50 gals. to store water in my basement. I have lots of bush craft equipment and out door survival stuff. I don't want to give away the farm, so I'll stop there. 😁 Survival is not an accident. Be prepared ......................... 😎👍👍

I hate to be somewhat of a downer but while having those small power banks are good, depending on the solar charger leads to a false sense of preparedness. You need hours of good sunlight to recharge those things which is often just not the case, though it might be more true in Florida than most other places. You will get some charge but not likely you will get a full charge. The advantage of having them is to have them charged already in an emergency. I would forget the fan buy another battery bank and a couple of USB fans. You cannot have too many of those power banks. We just went through 8 days of no power and we were lucky. What trees came down missed our house, we were not in danger of being flooded out, so we were among the fortunate. I keep 300 gallons of potable water on hand, the way I do that is more expensive but it is easy, I engaged a bottle water service, with good water that is steam distilled and oxygenated. Not water out of some municipal tap somewhere. I started with 4 bottles and every month I have them bring me one more than what we used. It is a bit of a hassle rotating the water but water is your most important prep. I invested in a one year supply of long term food, again expensive but if you pay for it over time not so bad. I hope it is something I never touch. I certainly did not need to for the last emergency as I try and keep us reasonably stocked up with food. Because I always know the next emergency is coming, I just do not know what or when. If you want to believe that the government is going to take care of you, well good luck with that, frankly if you are single, you can be as stupid as you like, you do you. But if you have a family depending on you, well I cannot imagine fewer things worse than watching your kids go hungry. But who knows it seems men are dying out these days. Water is number one, a roof over your head is number 2 and food is number three. One thing few every consider as a prep is cash, you should have as much as you can afford in small bills on hand for emergencies. When the power is gone or even if it is up, communications are not so no plastic. Cashless society my rear end. Still if you have cash and that is small bills, I keep 5 dollar bills at least $300 on hand always. Gasoline, anyone notice the lines for the few stations that were operational and most of them were cash only. All of our vehicles are filled up anytime we get to a half a tank, I also keep 80 gallons on hand and rotate it out every few months. Again a pain in the butt, still my Donna was in Acute care in Greenville, which was not prepped for the hurricane, I had to get there every day, 10 gallons of fuel every day. Guess how happy I was not to be trying to get gas, even if the prepping of it was annoying. Then unless you do have a massive solar system, you need some kind of generator, heck even if you have a massive one you still need a generator. Get as big as you can afford and it should be a propane generator. Being able to run your refrigerator just a few hours a day makes a real difference, if you have a well pump, having a generator that can run it really makes a difference. I have 4 40 pound bottles, 4 30 pound bottles and 5 20 pound bottles, I keep them full. That still was not enough but it was close enough. I will be adding more. This is another of those things, you do not buy it all at once, but a filled bottle from someplace like tractor supply every 3 or 4 months, eventually you will have enough for most emergencies. Prepping is a lifestyle, it is not glamorous, it certainly is not sexy but if you are a man it should be near and dear to your heart. You are responsible for your family, not the woman in your life, not your kids, you. If you are lucky she will be on board, most guys are not that lucky but it is your responsibity.

I'm in the western Upstate of South Carolina, and Helene hit us hard! Massive destruction, no power, grocery stores empty, gas stations out of gas, cell service towers damaged so no cell service, no internet, and so many huge downed trees on homes, cars, blocking roadways (some of which were entangled in power lines...I'm building an emergency kit for my family so we won't be in that situation again. I have a massive list from that experience of things to include in an emergency tote container. Times are hard, so I encourage people to also go to Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and places like that to stock an emergency kit. So many inexpensive things that will be a huge help for anyone on a tight budget.

You are so real for that chapstick. Not one of the other preppers have ever mentioned it, but it is the thing that will happen fastest when you don't have as much water to drink or are exposed to the elements. For me, I swear by Burt's Bees (the regular kind) something about the formulation always stops chapped lips dead in their tracks for me. I would also add Listerine strips. I have very low grade asthma, as does my son, and I have used those in a pinch to head off an asthma attack. (We don't use inhalers for the most part, it's generally extremely mild except for in certain circumstances, so this is NOT an inhaler replacement just a little support if your asthma is mild.)

Im in WNC. You wont need your phone, unless you want to se the time and date. Our area was out of phone service to text or call, and internet on phone for a week. We got it back faster than most and some still don’t have it. You’re gonna need cash. Even if stores have electric, the computers don’t work so they can’t take anything but cash. This also means gas pumps don’t work, so stay filled up and keep cash. The ATMs ran out of cash. I had to drive down to ga when I could after a few days so I could make a call and let family know I was okay. The stores will run out of food. Here ingles cornered the market in WNC so Publix etc wouldn’t come in. Well, they only have ONE distribution center and it flooded along with its trucks in Asheville. No trucks the week before came to stores, don’t know why. Maybe the impending longshoreman strike? I don’t know, but there were no more trucks coming and it looked lost apmpololyptic especially meat, eggs, milk, vegetables. I was prepared with full tank gas in my truck, 3 month food, lots water, cash, etc. if my area had been one town over- none of it might not have mattered. You can prepare all you want, and should, but if your house gets flooded or slides off where it’s built OUT of the BLUE!!!!! 🤷‍♀️

This is why I stress that, when it comes to preparedness, it's best to have overlapping capabilities. Build a go-bag for every member of the family that provides for the basics - shelter/clothing, food and the means to prepare it, water and the means to filter it, communications and the means to re-charge it, first aid, light. Make this all as uniform as you can, so everyone only has to learn their system - all the other systems are set up the same way. Then, prepare for the family - larger capacity for all of the above. The best solution I've come up with for food that is shelf-stable is a combination of #10 cans of dehydrated and freeze-dried food, and "add hot water" backpacker meals. Realistically, this is the only way I can see to reliably store a couple weeks or more of food for situations like this. Canning is a great skill and useful for home food storage, but jars upon jars of food are fragile, not easily transported, and weigh a lot. MREs are quick meals and calorie dense, but they cost like $10 or more per meal. If you're a family of four, that's 12 meals per day at $10/meal - that's a LOT of money...and cases of MREs are bulky, heavy, and have a limited shelf life. Augason Farms, Nutristore, and Fresh and Honest make quality freeze-dried and dehydrated food in #10 cans that lasts for a couple decades on a shelf. The best part about these sorts of foods for storage is that you can tailor meals based on dietary restrictions, as most of these foods are single-ingredient. This is a must for those on restricted diets, have Celiac Disease and can't eat wheat gluten, etc. A good resource for backpacker meals is the website Garage Grown Gear: they specialize in small-brand and ultra-light hiking gear, including a really great selection of backpacker meals. Lastly, don't skimp on snacks. Thru-hikers that spend 8-10 hours a day hiking terrain consume up to 1/3 of their daily calorie intake in snacks. You want calorie dense snacks that are nutritious, but easy to transport. Trail mix with M&Ms, fruit gummies, fruit leather, jerky, Skittles, granola...these sorts of things. Limit stuff like protein bars, as protein takes a lot of water for the body to break down, and they often have sugars in them that cause gut problems. The last thing you want in a disaster is a case of the trots.

Left one in the sun for a week and it wasnt fully charged. I bought an 80k mah for $70 and it works as should. Will charge in full sun in about 6 hours. Also bought some fans for about $100. They will run on high for 16 hours. I test everything before i buy multiples of them. Refill your own 16oz propane. Buy a brass adapter etc watch YT videos on how to refill. DIY is necessary to prep lots and not spend a ton. Think redundancy when you purchase stuff

The small orange solar charger CAN NOT be left on your dash to charge. Well it can be but it will swell up and ruin, ask me how I know that. It took me three days to charge it using home power BUT it lasts for days keeping my phone topped up. If you keep it charged, no problems.

I have one of the butane stoves too it's fantastic I bought mine at Gordon Food Service years ago for $35.00 a 3 pack canister was $7.99 not sure what they cost now but yes was able to make my coffee ( in my off grid percolator) and heat soup, fry eggs, hamburger, etc. If you buy a Pressure Cooker, not a Canner) you can even cook dry beans in it in 20 minutes. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast. GC 589.3 Amen!

Try to charge your solar powerbanks with the sun. I'm pretty sure the solar panel is to small.

Amazon reviews say solar charging is extrenly slow. There is no way it charges fast enough to keep your phone or even a laptop running when the first charge is gone. A powerbank with 4-6 panels this size would be good. They are not much more expensive.

I'll tell my experience with the solar battery pack you were showing in a picture.. those are expensive and they do not work well. We had one for my husbands CPap machine use, they do not last long as far as length of time ours wore out within a year we charged it by electric that husband put in at work when we didn't have power and they do not hold a charge after a few uses. I think we paid $100 to $150 for one, for one or two uses probably o.k. but not a good investment. Anna In Ohio

I think the solar power charger was $36.99 on Amazon. I don't think it is strong enough to power a Cpap machine, just to charge iPhones or iPads. I have used mine to charge our phones while on vacation. I wonder if yours was something different. It is good information to know that you shared, though.

You should really consider getting a rocket stove something you can feed sticks as fuel for cooking because what if you run out of that fuel source and can’t get it anymore. Also what if you have a week or more of cloudy days that solar is almost useless. Should consider battery powered options as backup to the solar powered things.

I actually found a good solar panel charger that came with a fan. Solar banks are not great. Wouldn't count on them more than what you charge with traditional electricity.

Hand held batteries with solar panels are crap the power the panel puts out is very very small. If the panel worked you would not need to plug it in. It will keep it topped off if already full in sun

@@sandysteinbrook Dear Mrs. Steinbrook, I really love your show you're not afraid to talk about important things. The cooking shows are good too. I wish I knew people like you in real life. I live in Massachusetts just north west of Boston and I'm surrounded by b l m and rainbow signs everywhere. I'm from the city where they filled high on Crack street, in the projects. Now I live in a very hoyty toyty town where I'm sure they've never lived or even associated with black folks not realizing that racism isn't a white thing and taking the rainbow from whT GOD intended it to mean and perverted it. It's as blue as you can get here. I'm not shy I have my Trump sticker on my truck and get plenty of still eyes for it. It's shows like this one that reminds me this is a big country full of GOD fearing proud of America Americans. Thanks for what you do ill pray for you if you pray for me. I'll pray for you anyway : ) again thanks George
