Rachel visits the Velma Thomas Early Childhood Center to learn more about the Reggio Emilia approach to preschool. Find out what it means when Reggio teachers say that children have hundreds of languages, how teachers and kids can be co-learners, and why organization is important to this teaching philosophy.

I've worked with children of all ages - from infants to college! As someone who currently works in a pre-school, I LOVE this approach and in fact, going to recommend it to my kids who live in the Chicago area!

Always loved it, I love the relaxing soothing environment of Reggio rooms because so many children have sensory issues and some teachers do too and you get tired of all the bright colors and need a calm space.

great explanation - I would have loved seeing your room in action with children participating. Also your documentation methods.

I’m surprised there was no mention of emergent project based learning and how teachers reflect upon and document classroom happenings… I love the Reggio Inspired Approach!

You cant have an entire philosophy based on the Reggio Emilia approach. It is only an approach, based on socio-cultural and post-structural theories. The RE approach is situated in Reggio Emilia, you cant say where this preschool is located is exactly the same as Reggio Emilia, Italy. That's impossible. You can only have an RE 'inspired' approach, but it needs to be altered to the specific social and cultural contexts of the preschools location. This is really emphasised by Malaguzzi and Canella, so this preschool really hasn't read the entire approach, or at least correctly.

I love the fact the items are all within the reach of the children and they can pick and choose whatever they need. I also love the many natural and sensory items but would have loved to have seen the room in action with children involved and how it all works together. I would also like to know more about the documentation.

The philosophy my ECE centre follows! :) Although we are not American so no phonics until school, and entirely free unstructured child-led play (except for two 10 minute long mat times for 3 years and above, and for 4 year olds we do a daily 20 minute 'get ready for school' lesson which can cover anything from tying shoes to being a good friend).

Red Deer 20 minutes would be to long for the preschool kids in America. Maybe better focus/more attention thier?

@@rileyburnett2860 I’ve seen kids sit down as young as four years old, and have full on conversations with each other. Public speaking, and giving children the opportunity to share what is on their mind and ask each other questions to create a dialogue is absolutely within the capability of children when you give them Permission to be who they are and stop putting limits on what they can and can’t learn based on “developmentally appropriate practice“. It’s all individual and based on the interest of the child. I feel like we focus on the wrong things so many times when we could be, working with children on an entirely different level. Never underestimate the power of a child to make meeting when you make it. Interesting, fun and playful.

I love love this space. However, how does the teacher let all kids have a fair go at each station or do they all just play where and when they want? How do you implement the curriculum into these stations? Especially for year/grade 1-2
