Reggio Emilia Education

In response to the tragedy of World War II, people from the town Reggio Emilia developed a new model of education. War ought to never happen again.
The Reggio Emilia approach is based on the philosophy of “an image of a child”. All children are viewed as full of potential, with an innate sense of curiosity and endless imagination. They are creative, capable of constructing their own learning and they have a natural interest to explore. While they follow their own interests, they always stay connected with others. Adults nurture their learning by providing a rich environment and support.

I love love love this curriculum for early childhood development. I was a pre school teacher for a Montessori reggio school and my 11 month old goes to a school like that as well! I love it so much and so happy I have resources like this to help my child discovery and create as much as her little heart desires. She is a very independent little girl and I really want to nourish this quality within her.

I havn't noticed the relation between war and the way we learn to treat each other in schools and at home before. It definitely makes sense though. In both cases there's an authority figure who teaches the 'way' while others don't learn to think for themselves. Well that's some food for thought.. :) great video!

My son starts Reggio Emilia this fall! It's going to be perfect for him. I don't like Pre-K where it's inside all day in one room, sitting at desks staring at a teacher. That's what my step son had and it wasn't good for him at all. I was so impressed by the school and the staff at the Reggio school when I went on a tour. I'm so excited for my son!

Sounds pretty similar to the Sudbury approach, though that one also contains important elements of democracy, which I think are critical. I really wish this kind of school would become the norm.

I am still learning about Reggio Emilia Approach, but I am trying to understand the idea of following a particular child's lead and inviting others to collaborate, creating a project together to share at the end as a culmination. What about the other students' interests? Do you just pick and choose which one to follow and have the whole class be a part of that? I don't understand how to progress in a student's interest without thinking about the rest. I can only imagine it would just be a class full of different ideas, interests, and abilities. How could one possibly take a child's interest and create a whole curriculum out of it? I find that in my classroom, students are curious about all different things, there's never usually one area of interest. Maybe I am not understanding this clearly. I also reach Prek

You observe your children and find areas where they start actively collaborating, engaging with each other. Shared interest. Then you think of ways to extend that interest, create play invitations out of it. see what happens, analyse, continue with chose path or change direction. Like that. It is not an easy topic. You should get more training on this to understand. You never make a whole class to be part of one thing, Reggio is about working in small groups. 2-5 children. So you offer different invitations. according to your observations of children, their development level and interest.

I feel like I understand your concern. And having experienced this first hand it's definitely not something that works with more than 3-5 people. Otherwise disruptive behaviour can have a negative effect on other children or the group as a whole. Like the reply states 2-5, small groups. It can and should work if done correctly. When done poorly it lacks the discipline required, easily attained by Montessori or Waldorf methods with their greater structured approach.

I took a homeschool philosophy quiz. I'm already doing Unschooling, montessori. Reggio and Montessori are tired. What is the difference in the two? They sound the same to me.

Very similar! Montessori was developed by Maria Montessori and is also child centred. But it has very specific tools that you use in the teaching process - things like the clothing frames, the activity boxes and songs etc. I feel like Reggio Emilia is more of a philosophy and then each school would come up with their own activities and resources. That’s my (admittedly limited!) understanding of it...

Great in theory if you had a classroom full of students invested in learning. Wait until they decide they are going to wrestle, chase each other around the room and out of it, scream out at each other, throw their resources out the window - all types of language I guess. How are you going to keep track of all their projects and where they are up to as you deal with massive behaviour problems? And what happens when Johnny destroys the project next door because he's bored and all those students begin arguing and fighting and crying and mums and dads are on the phone to the school? It might work if you had a class of 10 quiet, well-behaved Quakers, but it doesn't suit the 30+ student classrooms in mainstream.

I have a child in a Pre-K program that uses this approach... the problem is the transition. We are constantly worried about how she will transition into a traditional school environment because they don't teach traditional writing, spelling, and other subjects that prepares them for Kindergarten.

That is absolutely not true. The curriculum is led by the students interests, but the teachers job is to create the activities to support the learning objectives. And besides spelling your name, spelling is not developmentally appropriate for preschool.

Unfortunately, school founded on the idea of pacifism means no competition, so basically no sport, sexuality, or any personal rewards. The school itself isn't evil, but I feel sorry for the students, who have to face the brutal reality of adulthood after going through such education.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion. Sports, sexuality, and personal rewards have nothing to do with pacifism, and other than sports, they also have nothing to do with competition. But competition in the context of play is not opposed to pacifism. So you won't have high-stakes sports, but you will still have sports for play. And most children who go through this kind of school system are much better equipped to face the world when they leave than those who've been broken down by the traditional school system and only ever learned how to jump through hoops and try to avoid mistakes. Real life is full of mistakes, and if you don't know how to deal with that, you're at a huge disadvantage.

Looks like the prior Generations failed terribly lf the way things are to day an indication of how to teach children about Life and their Eternal Soul. Shalowm parenting begins With GOD or ends in destruction of your Soul and your loving Children also. I was guilty to the loss of a son. Don't make that mistake.!
