Hello I think its very useful.I wanna ask you a @t this sentence has a different subject using as a (with) participle?? ''Talk of a European Super League has been around since the 1980s, with many top football leagues in Europe afraid of such a competition forming''.

could please these these two sentences 1 At night i fell asleep hearing the grunting of the hippos . 2 i have also added a few comments describing my own experiences.. In the first examples why hearing word is used with ing ? And last one why the describing is used with ing ? Is it present participe ? comments which describe ?
@VirtuallyFluentenglish3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're totally right that you have examples of the present participle in these sentences. 1) HEARING > It's being used because of two actions happening simultaneously. Other examples: I opened the door reading my book, I fell asleep listening to music. *Note that GRUNTING is verb formation gerund (which also ends in ING). This follows the same spelling rules as present participle it's just a grammatical/technical difference. When the verb is the subject it becomes gerund. Other examples: running is fun, shouting is horrible. 2) DESCRIBING > It's being used as a participial phrase, you're adding extra information about the "comments". If you change the verb, it also requires ING - I have also added a few comments explaining my opinion. I hope this helps! 😃

above question. Dear teacher please explain advised by his teacher, guta gut started to behave properly. Punished by his mother, the boy refused to eat his dinner. Having eaten his lunch, biniam washed the tray. Having been a student in college for two years he now can tell his younger brother about it.

aren't gerunds and present participles different, you make them sound the same
@VirtuallyFluentenglish Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment and you're absolutely right. Gerunds have the function of a noun whilst present participles have a verb function. Apologies if it came across that way, we're trying focus on the "ING" spelling changes in this video, which would apply to converting any words into a gerund or a present participle. Of course, the grammar functions are different but the spelling rules would be the same. I hope this clarifies this and many thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. 😃
