Impressive. Breeder reactor and closing the nuclear uranium fuel cycle is what the world needs to make clean and plentiful energy. However, there was another promovideo on this KZbin channel, which I like more; it compared the reactor to a stove which was producing new wood, while burning wood. It was more instructive than this video. I used the former one to promote breeder reactors here in EU.

@Mikhail_Utkin
@Mikhail_Utkin 3 ай бұрын

Great presentation. Russian nuclear technical proficiency is world class and deserves recognition and employment. It would be good to build more BN-800s also in other countries, to increase familiarity and confidence in fast reactor technology.

1) Yes, it is cheaper, but for now there are only places in the calculations. 2) No, not more effective. Graphite reactors use more fuel (VVER 1000 80 tons of uranium, RBMK 1500 180 tons), despite less enrichment of the 235 isotope there will be more (although now fuel enrichment for VVER is being increased, so it makes no sense). 3) These reactors have problems with disposal due to graphite.

It's still a developmental reactor, there's not a lot of experience with commercial SFR use (unlike the hundreeds of Submarine and commercial LWR), and the Russians use still many Nuclear plants in load following mode, once the tech becomes better understood is likely to get similar load factors to the VVERs that very often surpass 105%

Wait a minute! @ 6:46 "A reactor emergency cool down system where regular air is used." This is a sodium reactor. Sodium reacts with the oxygen to create sodium oxides. This fuel will be hot. Should water vapor be present from the outside... toxic radioactive gases will pressurize the anulus. It's a chain reaction that SHOULDN'T occur in the first place. The emergency environmental air cool down system looks dangerous. Can there be a situation where air makes contact with sodium?

The air will cool the heat exchanger. It's not coming into contact with the sodium. The best analogy would be the radiator of your car engine. The air flows over it, cooling the fluid inside which then cools the engine. This works in a similar way.

There were already a lot of leaks on the BN 600, including contact between sodium and water. As a result, it is in good health and will eventually work for 60 years. 2) On the BN 800, the fire safety systems are more developed, so there have been no leaks on it yet, they have time to be detected and eliminated.

And looking at that cross section view of the reactor, you can see that there’s no proper protective concrete shell on top the reactor which should be a worldwide safety standard. (This same mistake was made at chernobyl when it was built) making this even more dangerous. You can see that all they put on the roof are metal sheets held by beams.

@@skibididopyesdop 1) On the BN 800 there is a fire safety system; leaks are eliminated even before they grow. 2) Small fast reactors may not have a containment, because cooled with sodium rather than water.
@skibididopyesdop
@skibididopyesdop 3 ай бұрын
@@nedward.7442 It does not matter if it has a fire protection system, a concrete containment is still a standard that should be enforced worldwide. If the fire prevention fails, then what? On top of that this reactor is super unstable because of the possible condensation. It will just leak in the outside air? They are obviously trying to keep this as cheap as possible by cutting corners everywhere and getting rid of essential safety standards.
@nedward.7442
@nedward.7442 3 ай бұрын
@@skibididopyesdop I can partially agree with you. And the point of fire safety is to find small sodium leaks and fix them before they get bigger. But I didn’t really understand about the instability of the reactor. By the way: the future BN 1200 will have a pressurized shell, which is good.
