Four humorous guard conversations from Thief. The last one involves four guards, though, so, technically, it's "The Guard Duo" and "The Guard Quartet".

This is what gives Thief its "soul", for lack of a better word. I'm currently replaying the game, and it's like visiting an old friend.

I'm with you. Any part of the world of Thief has meaning and needs to be there. The guard duo offers humor and a sense of what the more carefree citizens of the City do and think. I go to Thief often and always feel I'm home again. :)

@@trevorthetaffer1364 As the Thief-loving RazorFist says, it's not a level, it's a place. And the Bear Pits discussion perfectly foreshadows the theme of Nature vs Industry in the first game and the sequel. Human infrastructure and scientific development have surely helped humans to prosper, but in our very bodies we have become weaker and dependent upon these things, just like the domesticated (mangy harmless as long as they're not wearing harness) bears that are a mere shadow of their ancestors. But these are the thoughts that come to me as I play Thief, and as I walked around in the Polar Vortex last week!

@@Torgo1969 Wow. I have never thought of it that way before! I have only ever highlighted the Builder / Trickster painting in one of Bafford's sitting rooms as foreshadowing, but that the bear pits convo is also that...wow! It makes it even more meaningful! Yes - it's a brilliant example of how the themes of the City work into even lighthearted discussion between a couple guards. Thanks for sharing! RazorFist sounds brilliant. And how so on the Polar Vortex?

@@trevorthetaffer1364 As I walked around outdoors when it was below zero degrees Fahrenheit for 60 straight hours I imagined my ancestors from Northeast Poland enduring similar conditions, but in the absence of modern technology and comforts. Tougher men than me, so I said a silent prayer of admiration for what they went through. I was merely walking to my comfy car (warmed-up like the stable boy) but they had no such luxuries. And as for "just a bunch of guys wishing for the old days" in the second conversation, that kind of describes Constantine/Trickster. In the Escape mission, you come across a scroll written by him wishing for the old days when men would "fear and love their Lord" because the absence of tools and science made them fear the unknown aspects of the universe that existed outside the small light of the campfire in the cave. It really exposes him as a manipulative bastard that wants to keep humans under his thumb by destroying their ability to think and live and prosper independently of him.

@@Torgo1969 Ah, I see! And: "warmed-up like the stable boy," hah! :) I remember that readable, and it actually makes me sympathize with Constantine some. Sure, he is manipulative and self-serving in his intentions, but I could get behind wanting to bring back the old days of mystery and wonder (though I'm sure there's still plenty of that if we look for it). It makes the Trickster seem like a pitiful figure. He couldn't reclaim his power on his own, after all.

Love how in Bafford, you hear Benny and that other guard talking and at the beginning of Masks they call back to it. That's how you build a world.

Smart Guard has had enough of Benny by the time of Masks!

I'm yet to find a better game than Thief 2, Looking Glass were outstanding. They just don't make bears like they used to.

Thief 2 NPC dialogues are brilliantly written and acted... Haven't found a game that comes even close. I remember laughing my ass off while being immersed the same time. Good times.

the 2 red guards are also the only guards I've seen not hostile to garret. If you bash those purple guys in the back of the head they'd pretend they never saw you

@@epochpilot9404 What? You soft belly. The bears got these new muzzles with underslung cheek spikes. Last time I was there, heh, there was a real eye gulging.
