Man, the choice of artwork used in the game to convey a mood is just so perfect. It's not extravagant, not showy... but damn is it haunting. The atmosphere, the voice acting, music, ambience -- and probably extremely rarely of all today: knowing _the value of quietness in between these things._ Knowing how to say/illustrate with less. _Knowing that not knowing is part of the charm._ The lack of explanation for the world, save for a few cryptic "biblical" verses, of the cruel fire and brimstone variety -- and of demons.

You said it perfectly. The thing making games so obnoxious these days is that every interaction is made excessively gamey on purpose. A constant drip feed of bullshit coming up on your HUD to maximize play time and keep the dopamine flowing. So many of them have become mindless gambling simulators designed to waste your time. I'm glad more people are getting wise to this problem. Thankfully, the stillness, quiet, and telling-more-with-less approach is still around with some indie games. Especially, horror genre. Hell, even GTA 4 had a lot of moments where things can simmer down and you can absorb the atmosphere of Liberty City. It even did a lot of world building through suggestion - with storefronts, random NPC's saying stuff, and the TV/radio stations.

The way the Hammerite spoke, in that old King Richard James style really weirded and spooked me out as a kid. Going through Cragscleft prison was terrifying... took me days to figure out where to go... especially the mines... we ought to stay away from there...
