Veterinarians and livestock producers play an important role in preserving the power of antibiotics and helping slow down the threat of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic-resistant infections can spread between animals and people. From January 2015 to November 2017, an outbreak of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Heidelberg linked to dairy cattle caused severe illness among people, mostly children, who came in contact with cattle. It is important for the agriculture community to practice biosecurity and for anyone who contacts animals to practice handwashing and hygiene. Veterinarians and those in the agriculture community can work together to use antibiotics appropriately in animals helping preserve the power of antibiotics to treat people and animals.
