Very cool video. Having a cb, especially with the weather band, in you vehicle during an emergency or weather event cannot hurt. I have a President Ronald 10/12 meter converted so it will also pickup 11 meter in my TJ. It's a great little radio and I'm really happy with it.

I started in CB. I lived in Auburn, just up the hill from you. I was originally licensed in CA. I don't understand the hatred for CB. I don't use it much any more, but if it wasn't for CB, I wouldn't be a HAM now!

I used to have 2 meter fm/ssb and 11 meter am/ssb rigs in my vehicle. Used my FCC issued call signs on each. Not so much anymore.

Jason, I've ran into that, too. I've had hams tell me about all the bad language and talk that goes on 11 meter, but really it's only a small amount on 19 and the Super Bowl. That leaves 38 channels AM and 120 ssb. That's a lot of radio to ignore. I've met a lot of dandy folks on 38 lsb. I am a General ham and also hold my GMRS license, but cb is still a favorite of mine.

I am a licensed ham and used to have a tuned 5' truckers whip on the roof of my house hooked up to an old stock Navaho AM/SSB base unit. I talked all over the world with that setup when the skip was in. CB is excellent for inexpensive short range local communications.

Great little CB review. I've seen some HAM's knocking CB, but it has its place especially as you have stated that most people aren't HAM's. When you are out on any adventure it is better to "have and not need, than to need and not have".

cb radio is by far good. its a backup even truckers and sometime other cb'ers on the road use them I use a cb for a traffic back up I got on ask what was going on a trucker told me from about a mile up the road ..I always say a cb is always a good emergency communication. Not everyone has a ham radio..

Got started in CB when propagation was better, had some great long range conversations when the skip was high. I also was a part of a nightly roundtable on the base station & base antenna at home, which was reliable for close to 30 miles a lot of the time. Had a lot of fun talks on air. Sure beats social media today. I miss those days.

Thanks for the info. The radio and antenna will be arriving in a couple days for my Bonneville. Brilliant multi-functional screen for switching & scanning channels and fits perfectly in the only spot left. I simply like the looks of the antenna but am sure it won't let me down for my purposes. I got my ham ticket about 25 years ago. While working as a design engineer for Cobra. I also believe you shouldn't limit yourself. Nothing wrong with having a CB. And, my off road friends all have them. My pick would be something a little bigger. Maybe a Cobra 29 or a Uniden PC78. But that's just me!

I received my license in 1991 in order to be able to carry a scanner in my vehicle with no legal repercussions nor fear of confiscation. The region I lived, at the time, made it illegal to carry a scanner in our automobiles without an amateur radio license, first responder certification of some kind, or without being active military. Having a scanner from 6 years of age, the new law would not do. I got my entry level license and continued to carry my scanner, complete with antenna, in my vehicle. The tell-tale antenna never attracted attention from the local authorities. The only time I had to present a license was when I was walking in the downtown area, just listening to guards, valet parking attendants, people on walkie talkies, and the such. An officer politely told me it was illegal to have a scanner outside my home property without a license. I politely told him there were no worries. I had a license. He asked my callsign and I told him. I then asked if he wanted to see the license and he told me it was not necessary because I seemed since. He shook my hand and said, "Happy scanning." Several years passed and I was relocated to a region that required no permission to use a scanner anywhere at all. With that, and knowing I could never possibly afford any equipment, I simply let the license expire. It turned out I still became a heavy hobbiest without the license. I still winded up making antenna tuners, amplifiers, power supplies, antennas, modifying radios from a, different service to function in amateur bands, climbing towers, setting up stations, and more. I did everything but transmit, save in thd humble citizens band and GMRS. I still can not afford the equipment. However, I do not have to. Customers give me old radios, computers, and broken equipment. Perhaps it may be time to reclaim my license. I would be a junk operator. However, there is no rule against operating junk on the bands as long as the signal is responsibly powered, clean, and courteous. Perhaps I should act upon my whim.

I put 400-1000 miles each week on the Interstate. I monitor 146.52 on the road and hear nothing for weeks on end. Today I heard an aeronautical mobile on .52 so that was interesting. I do have a small CB just for traffic info, I rarely talk on it, keep the mic in the glove box most of the time. I have actually considered removing the 2m/440 rig from my vehicle due to lack of use, and just run the CB to keep up with traffic info.

As a ham, I still find CB to be an advantage. I live just a few miles from the Washington capital beltway and the Baltimore beltway with I-95 and several other major roadways nearby and BWI airport. The CB activity is alive and well in this area.

You're right, CB is radio. Seems to me that a lot of hams are reluctant to admit when they use CB or they're just snobbish about it. Well CB still has its place and there are people out there trying to bring back some of its popularity. On the road, CB is a great thing to have. Lots of truckers still use CB and that's a really big help because you can listen in and have real time info on traffic conditions, speed traps, etc. Bottom line, CB is practical.

Good video. Me and the guys I hunt with have CB’s in our trucks. I use mine every day driving to work. There are a few active channels I bs with locals on Friday and Saturday nights. We’re all using Stiker A-10 and Wilson 1000 antennas and the range is pretty impressive.

How the devil did I miss this review? I have a Motorola MoCat 40, a Cobra 29 LTD, and an HR2600 with the 11 meter mod. This is on my radar now as my ultimate goal is to have CB, GMRS (WRDN460), VHF/UHF, and HF on the mobile. And, hard to believe, I still remember my ancient CB license - KAYR5467. Now if I could just remember to grow hair on the top of my head.

We used CB in Alaska exclusively for off-roading. I've bad a Cobra 75WX in my JK for over a decade, still going strong. It's nice too because you can hide the "body" since I run doorless and topless for half of the year.

I like the President Bill! It's a great size and feels solid. Features are well thought out. I bought it because there is limited space in my vehicle (which isn't nearly as cool as a Jeep). Like you I enjoy having the Weather function, which justified its purchase. I live outside Seattle in some hilly terrain. So my range is pretty crummy around home. But it sounds good sending and receiving, and is a great unit for keeping in touch with my house.

Had one in my last Tacoma. Worked great. Only problem I came up with was it didn’t have removable power cable , BUT easy fix with a power pole or Spayd connectors. Another thing was I grabbed an adapter to a 4 pin cobra and was using power mic for a bit better audio.

I honestly don't understand why some hams have issues with CB radio, I know the "type" of people that are usually on them, but seriously CB radio Got me interested in HAM and I probably wouldn't have ever found HAM without CB radio. CB literally gave me the so called radio "Bug" anyway, the key word here is radio, it is still a radio and a viable one in certain areas at that. I have about 5 or 6 of them around and I always have one in the Jeep. although I must admit it is a modified 10 meter that will do 11 meter as well. CB can still be fun if used right and It truly introduces many people to the hobby of HAM radio. Looks like President knocked this one out of the park. Thanks for the video! 73's N0MLP

I will never drive anything but a Jeep Wrangler. I bought mine new in 1996 as a 1997. She has been with me through far more than any human could have ever been. From March 23rd to November 22rd, her name is RMS Stargazer. From November 23rd to March 22, she becomes the Shackleton Express. She has been with me through two homes, a myriad of human friends, disease, many animal companions, horrible accidents, financial ruin, nation wide financial collapse, several Canadian prime ministers and American presidents, terrorist attacks, near government collapse in both nations, the horrible pandemic, personal property fire, and even, very recently, a fire in my beloved Stargazer that seemed to have doomed her to become lawn art. Far away from civilization, I had just put the top on for late autumn and winter. My home, which had burned the 10th of January of this year 2022, was just finished being rebuilt. I was to return home that night after the movers put all the boxes in the garage. The trip back home from the hotel is 162 kilometers. Throughout the journey home, various dashboard lights turned on and off, stray beeps would be produced as the needles went flat then maximised then back to reading things normally again. The axillary lights dimmed to two candle light power. Yet, the engine still kept churning along flawlessly. All thoughout the trip home, lights, needles the radio, CB radio, all were doing stange things. When there was less than a kilometer for me to get home, smoke started pouring out of under the bonnet. I finished the trip, opened the bonnet and I found flames in the engine compartment. I had to empty two extinguishers to get the fire out. I left the bonnet opened overnight as there was still smoke being produced and it was 03:00. The morning brought about the extensive damage under the bonnet. It seemed that was the end of our 26 year relationship and I fell to my knees and wept. The bonnet was buckled, from heat. Horrible yellow crust was all over the front clip, grill, bumper, windscreen, headlights, and everywhere in the engine compartment. Under my dear Stargazer were plastic stalagmites hanging from melted plastic. She must have given her all to get me home that night. I reached in, turned the key and nothing happened. With tears in my eyes, I fired up my tractor for the first time in 10 months after having it sit in my barn after the fire. I attached my once beautiful Stargazer and dragged her to the side of my new house. That was mid October of this year. The filling day, I started looking for a replacement TJ. Some good bargains were found. But, when I went to see the TJ, it was Niagra Falls from my eyes. I could not replace my dear Stargazer. The vehicle I borrowed from work was a lifeless E-250 cargo van. I decided to put it to use. I started hunting for a replacement wiring loom, a bonnet, two inner fenders, and one outer fender, a grill, and two headlights. The revival of Stargazer became the revival of the Shackleton Express, and still no life. Parts are somewhat hard to find for TJs as they are stripped as soon as one is retired. But, by the 1st of December, the Shackleton Express returned to life, albeit with scorch marks. I had to reuse several body parts. But she lives. I will never part with my beloved. She is my love, my life, my dream come true. I believe she will be in my last vehicle, my last friend, my last love.

Sometimes CB is the only band that someone will talk to me. The repeaters are so quiet these days, everyone listening but too lazy to pick up the microphone any more. Also CB sometimes lets you in on why you are stopped on the highway, accident report, etc. The truckers are always talking if you can stand the foul language. Dave K8WPE

I have had that same CB in my Tacoma for the same off-roading reason...The smallest one I could find, and it works VERY Well for a CB. My primary radio is, of course, the Yaesu FTM-400XDR. The Walker County Amateur Radio Group here in Huntsville, TX is finally going digital with a Yaesu repeater. It's also great for highway travel...listen for Bear and Traffic reports. 73 KG5TNK

Wow all the hams acting like its such a big deal to "also have a cb", how many people have a ham license thay DIDNT start out with a cb?? Cb's are great, they are THE BEST form of communication for travel as far as keeping informed of whats going on out on the roads. Ham radios are fine, but really, the local repeater you have in your hometown not going to be working along your entire route as cb will. In fact finding another repeater with the exact same input and pl tones might not happen over your entire route, and most ham radios arent easily programmed from the panel or while driving, even then, there may or may not be anyone monitoring, and if they are they arent likely to be able to help you with whats going on up the road a few miles. Tools in the toolbox, and cb has its place, hams should lose the snobish attitude and utilize cb radio. Sure there are less than stellar operators on the band, just as there are on ham radio. Just ignore those types, dont engage, ignore and they will move on. And BTW, Im a General class ham, have been licensed ham operator since 1995, but been using cbs since the early 80's. And i have a GMRS license. Tools in the tool box.

I still have my old cb in my JK, the 4x4 comm in Italy was 75% CB - 25 LPD/PMR/Freeband - 10% ham in UHF... a lot of radio populate my interior and yess only 2 can do all but why not carry more? the real problem with JK it's have a good ground for all antennas ;) think to replace old 706 with new ICOM qrp 705 and give it a little boost :D

Greetings from 3 years later. With my ancient Jeep recently recovering from a fire, the ancient Cobra 148 GTL I have had since 1990, met its demise in the fire. I had that in my first vehicle. It was heavily modified for 10 meter and 12 meters over the decades. It was a lot of fun to listen in on very long distance conversations. I also had more bands to use in emergencies, with Citizen's band still working flawlessly. I personally modified it to function 24.525 Mhz to 28.615. I loved that old fossil. I put a lot of work into it. Some licensed operators even used it to call out a few times. I could not. For the revival of my dear Jeep, after she died in a fire, I got her an Anytone AT-5555 II. That one already has 24.7Mhz to 31.125Mhz. Maybe I may get a license to use the entire frequency range available to the radio. After all, my Jeep got a second chance at life, there is a new radio in my Jeep after decades of the old one, new look, new top, replaced wiring, new seats, perhaps it is time for a new radio license. The time has come to stop being a listener and become a transmitter. E=IxR, W=ExA, series resistance (1R+1R)=2R, parallel resistance 1/(1/1R+1/1R) = 1/(1/2R), 468.25 ÷ Frequency in megahertz = half wavelength, center fed, dipole in feet. Multiply the answer by 12 to get inches. Multiply the inches answer by 2.54 to get centimeters. Regardless, it is time to stop being a hobbiest and become a licensed operater. Maybe, we may find ourselves conversing on 10 meters or 12 meters. - -... ... - -

How's the cb situation in the US? Is it still used? Here in Italy it's mostly used by truckers (on 27.465mhz) with modified alan 48s. In the area where I live there's a group of people which are mostly hams that started using a cb again just to have fun and talk just by using simple radios again

Hum, "crack radio.." Remember the jeep has a hand brake... I guess it would be good to have while on the road so the truckers would let me know where the smokey in hiding while I am on HF bands.. Places I hunt the only thing that works is HF bands so to add CB that would mean I will have 3 radios in the truck and 3 antennas (HF, VHF/UHF, & CB)..

Using your call on CB frequencies probably is frowned upon by the FCC and ARRL. That radio has no SSB, and channel 9!? Nobody's responded to a request for assistance on CB channel 9 in the last 30 years!

That radio has all 40 channels and a button to switch to channel 9 immediately. Sure it's AM only but for this guy's purposes SSB isn't required. Most people run AM only in their mobiles. As for using your call sign on 27Mhz...I doubt it's a problem.

Too bad dual use ham/CB is illegal. I'd like to have say 10 meters and 11 meters (am/ssb legal power) in the same box. Not much room in many modern cars. There's really no need for a frequency display on CB. I guess a tiny 40 channel am rig isn't the worse choice for caravanning and four wheeling.
