25W is usually more than enough for a mobile setup, especially with a good antenna and ground plane. Great price for a dual mobile rig...even if it still is just a TYT/Baofeng/Wouxun variant. Cheers! Chris - NI7I

Have the QYT version of this radio. I have had it a couple years now and it has done the job. Great little radio for the money. Only downside is programming. You have to use the computer to get it to take the names of the channels , if that's your thing. Programming from the face of the radio is a pain.

Thanks. I'm just now getting used to running it.

You did good with the aerial and mount. I'm currently doing my second Jeep install. First was on a TJ now JK. TJ had the advantage of a full roof rack, Larsen nmo 270 mounted dead center. The JK has about 5 acres of plastic for a hard top. So i'm either gonna lip mount like you did or retro a pillar mount for LED to accept an nmo. 2m/70 cm drivers side mount and scanner antennae on passenger side. To anyone especially with a Jeep, take your time and spend the money on bringing good quality, fused DC into the cab. I use the RigRunner setups from DX eng. Once that's done the next HURDLE is finding a place to mount the radio. Here in Texas, dash is too hot, under seat is non sense, so gotta install something up near visor or center to hold it. If they'll do what you did and spend the money on a good antenna and make sure she has plenty of metal beneath, that alone will add an additional $500 worth of quality TX to a budget priced transceiver. Makes all the difference. Anyhow, good video, good install. KG5MCT

Great radio for the price. I have the Anytone 778uv which is essentially the same radio and identical minus dtmf function. The Anytone does not ship with a programming cable however, so one has to tinker and figure out the manual programming.

Some of the CB shops have a device that attaches under the dash, and a plate that the CB mounted to so you just pulled the radio out, and the antenna and power connections were on the plate. When you get home, you just slide the radio out no connectors to fool with.

Congrats on the new ticket. I'd suggest an antenna that doesn't require a ground plane. That will greatly increase the places and ways you can mount it.

K6UDA I appreciate it! I plan on mounting the antenna in a similar location- my understanding is that the 1/4 wave, like the one you used, does require a ground plain, and a 1/2 does not- is this correct/ does that location have an adequate ground plain? Thanks for the help!

Good stuff Bob. I found a couple of Icom IC-208Hs for $150-ish a piece. I just put one in my JK and will be putting the other in the wife's Cherokee. I also didn't put the radio under the seat because I run without doors or top here in Fresno. I found a really good hiding spot. Also, I have a fiberglass hood so I mounted my antenna on the rear tire carrier. I did a write-up if you're interested.

I mounted to the top of the dash also but with 30 lb/sq in double sided tape and a heavy ft‑2900r, hasn't moved in any off-road adventure. Clean the plastic dash and bottom of radio with alcohol first. No screw holes. Also have an antenna mount from ebay that uses existing bolts next to windshield "ebay search 271913047453" for $13, way less in the way.

Thought you were going to talk about an HF set up. For what you want, VHF/UHF you can just carry an HT
@K6UDA6 жыл бұрын
HT's don't work well in vehicles unless: 1. Your using an external antenna 2. You only using nearby repeaters 3. You won't ever need more than 5 watts ERP

Have you seen any truly off road capable dual band antennas? I have an Icom ID5100 in my CUCV and bought a Comet antenna, kinda similar to what you use, and also bought the add on spring. I caught a branch where the antenna coils around and the spring didn't do any good. Ripped the antenna and NMO mount right off my truck! The military has some great antennas for these trucks but unfortunately they can't be converted to work in these frequencies. But man can they take a beating and the spring on them will allow them to bend all the way to the ground if pushed far enough.
@K6UDA5 жыл бұрын
The only truly offload antenna is a fire stick. I try to make offload applications for a real ham antenna.
@brendanjames71225 жыл бұрын
@@K6UDA Thanks. I see they make one for 2m, and found it on Amazon where they claim it's 2m and 70cm, but can't imagine it would work well on both seems it's made for 2m. One review stated it was good on 70cm but not so good on 2m, others just said 2m was good with no mention of 70cm. I suppose I could mount 2 different antenna with a splitter to change from one to the other, but I'd rather not go that way.
