President KP77 UK CB27/81 CB radio (base) - Repair & service adjustments

Well it's Fixed Base Friday & I have a new silly mug to prove it. I thought I saw an Audioline PT345 on the storeroom base station 'in' shelf.but it turned out to be a lousy & filthy President KP77.
Anyway, it works now.

Good. Well you can enjoy the 'on the air' test for that scruffy Midland 4001 I was working on the other day. It works great now. You'll be out in the car with your wife & find a place that you too can call' scratchy corner'. richard

I prefer the dirty ones. I think you should mop up the IPA or fluxcleaner with towel role. If you don’t mop away the solvent all your doing is redistributing the filth when the solvent evaporates.

I bought one of these back in the 90s from a car boot for £10 it's been on my she till now I've switched it on I can hear people talking but not sure if it transmits also I think it's got some modification of more channels on it on the pa switch and the hi low tone any ideas what that could be? Thanks in advance 👍

If it really is modified for extra channels, this would be illegal & what's killed the set anyway. Putting back to standard plus changing the power supply & a few other eletrolytic capacitors & realignment is probably all that's wrong. Richard, G0OJF, UK

It's run over the PCB in order to aid the finding of dry joints. I was sorting dry joints on the radio whilst talking about the vibrator, but failed to put the two subjects together! Richard

President sold rigs via many importers in the UK and were quite prolific, but only within the realms of multimode CB radios and so called "10 meter export" sets and were highly regarded with the likes of the Grant, Jackson (both silver and black fronted varieties with 5 blocks of 40 channels and the dark grey 6 blocks of 40 models with ASC auto squelch), George, and the Lincoln to name a few. Dubious legality? Yes - but they were damn good at the multimode lark and highly acclaimed. In fact, the last iteration of "6 band" President Jackson was available right until 2003 brand new for £180. Also lay claim to fame to make the first multimode that was technically legal, (as long as it was in the UK setting) with the Jackson II. They clearly had an idea that the UK would be granted SSB on CEPT band soon.

Yes, but this channel is about UK legal CB radio servicing, and specifically says in the blurb "this is an SSB free zone"! Richard

But a brief note in the video about their "other stuff" wouldn't have hurt because you're doing President a disservice based on one apparently terrible rig. Something worded like "Their multimode export radios are good from what I hear, but we won't dwell on that as I deal with legal FM rigs only". Otherwise, great and informative channel. Get to see and witness stuff I seen in magazines as a kid that my Dad never owned; found your channel purely on the Manor Kestrel video alone because he used to own one.

As I said on the video, this President product really put me off the make, and President didn't reappear on the UK market until about 2014 with the Teddy. No, the knob just didn't come out of the dishwasher until the end of the video! Look at the work I had to put into tuning this, going backwards & forwards & ending up stagger tuning the TX multipliers to get the 40-channel bandwidth....and a full 4W. Just done the on'the air test & it worked fine. Should have done this set on Sh1t set Sunday. There was a time that every batch of radios I bought had a KP77 lurking in it. I have another 3 wanting doing....and one doesn't have a bottom & has a hacked lid...so if you want to sell me your lid & bottom....email me! [e-mail] Richard, G0OJF
