President Reagan appointed me United States Diplomat at age 55 I'm going on 58. While serving in The United States Marine Corp in the 80's Marine Security Forces is what my M.O.S. came out of, I saved another Marines life and captured a murderer at the same time. President Reagan appointed me United States Diplomat because of making the Right Choices that captured that murderer and saved a United States Marines life. I love The United States of America!! I wish my Russian was good enough to make out what Gorbachev was saying about Afghanistan (at the cocktail reception) ...the interpreter unfortunately is inaudible. Very serious conversation. Somebody with good software could probably clear out the extraneous noise.

Afghanistan was sure a gravitationally political problem back then. The irony is that today is still a problem of concern. I'm sure if both the US and Russia can work together, and find a common ground about how to bring lasting stability, without just surrendering the country to terrorists or armed fanatics; the problem of Afghanistan wouldn't disappear, but would be much easier to handle than it was for the Soviets, or the Americans.
