An analysis of "My Garden": The phrase "It was not good in my garden that year" could refer to the different aspects of the merchant's personal life that were troubling for him, such as struggling to provide for his impoverished family. It may also represent the pain he experienced as he witnessed the people he raised and took close/gentle care of helplessly wither away (like flowers in a garden). "I am not brave, I am a merchant" could represent the merchant's disparaging perception of himself. Perhaps he's disappointed in himself for not having achieved more, or taken the risk to try for a more fulfilling existence. It could also indicate the merchant feels he's let his family down. "my trade was bad for me, but for my family and for my fearful son drake, it sure looked like bravery" The merchant's family admires the merchant's perseverance through whatever hardship (again, likely poverty) they're experiencing, and don't blame the merchant for their current position. Perhaps they are even grateful to him. "My trade was bad for me" could mean the merchant holds himself to far greater standards than his family holds him to, and feels deep self-hatred for falling so short of whatever those standards are. "But it was not good in my garden that year, it was not good in my garden" no amount of effort or love/support from his family could change the horrible reality of their situation. Despite everything the merchant tried, he could never be sure he and his family would come out okay. The tragic tale of a self-hating merchant endlessly trying (yet failing) to provide a good life for his suffering/impoverished family. If this poem wasn't a complete joke-turned-accident, it would actually be very moving.

What is with this bizarre new collective belief that comedy has to be bipartisan and neutral (99% of it coming from triggered butthurt Trump supporters, of course). There’s is no moral imperative there. It’s not fucking news. Not that the news is remotely objective in America but at least there’s the pretense that it ought to be.
