This is really good breakdown of a bout! Could we have more of this please? Nikolai Novosjolov is my favorite fencer. Would love to see more of his bouts!!!

I'm italian and that: "excessive italian hand gesture" pumping up for a second at 2.43 just killed me. That's so true, lol!

I like your videos. I'm from Rome so I'm naturally accustomed with the Italian school of fencing (I'm talking about Foil and Épée... Sabre is not my cup of tea, to be honest) and your fencing philosophy sounds vey different from mine, nevertheless I appreciate very much these kind of analysis. Bravo and grazie, mate.

My favourite part is when the coach comes up to Pizzo when he’s pumping himself up after 1st break, and Pizzo just shrugs him off to breathe

Why does Pizzo always have to lean forward? Does he want to get a hunched bad back when he’s an old man?! 😝😝😝 I thought you’re always meant to keep your back straight! 😝😝😝

It's unorthodox for sure. To answer your question, a lot of coaches will teach traditional weight distribution in the en garde as 50/50 front leg/back leg. Pizzo goes more a of 65/35 ratio. Pizzo's preparation revolves around a lot of binds and flicks, and with the flick, having the weight forward makes it a little easier to put momentum into his flicks.

Italian rapier was fenced in a somewhat similar yet distant fashion. Some fighters, and even some marksmen get wide, low, and aggressive in stance. It has benefits of being able to manage recoil, keeps the core vitals further back, and keeps the protective portion of the skull foward while allowing the hands to protect the smaller target of the face. It does have the drawbacks we can all see.
