Secret footage between Trump, Obama, and Biden discussing Justinian.
That Trump's yeet at the end is because I set his stability to 0 % so the AI voice sometimes starts to scream uncontrollably. I thought it was funny as hell so I decided to left that in.

I know it’s not exactly popular, But in the end I’m really kinda agreeing with Donald here. From one perspective, Justinian’s reign was a veritable golden age for the Byzantine Empire and the closest the east has ever gotten to reestablishing rule in the west post 476, but in hindsight, A lot of what Justinian did crippled the empire in terms of economy, Military, and diplomatic standing. Sure, The plagues had a lot to do with this decline too, But it really must be asked whether it’s wise to continue the imperial restoration project during the plague. And speaking of said imperial restoration project, It was not only a failure in hindsight, But there are even contemporary sources like Cassiodorus’ Variae that speak of it as a fundamental paradigm shift for the Roman successor kingdoms. Before Justinian’s wars, many of the new kingdoms operated by Roman law, Precedent, And institutions. They called themselves Roman, And they swore suzerainty to the eastern emperor. Now, wether or not these kings were sincere in their commitments is a whole different discussion, But still. The Mediterranean world still operated by a commonwealth-Esque framework with Eastern Rome as its head. Justinian destroyed this by redefining what a Roman actually is, And invading multiple Germanic kingdoms. For as much as people praise the recon quest of Italy, It was really a glorified Byzantine colony, A backwater. Justinians peace with the Persians was impermanent His conquests were more detrimental and were almost immediately undone anyways In light of the plague, He made the wrong decisions The treasury was left greatly diminished Is it any wonder that the empire would soon undergo massive reforms under Heraclius and become the Byzantine state we know today? Justinian was a great ruler, don’t get me wrong. But there’s a reason why he’s seen as the last gasp of Roman greatness, Because he gambled everything on a poorly timed and iffy restoration campaign. I’d say his greatest achievement would be making the comprehensive legal code.

not sure if true, but i've read somewhere that the invading germanics in Italy were assimilating quite well. Justinian wrecked the stability of the area and undid the economic and social recovery that was undergoing.
@noriyakigumble3011
@noriyakigumble3011 Жыл бұрын
@@pokeshark yes and no, and I’m glad you raised that question because it’s immensely fascinating. So after Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus in 476, and he himself got deposed by the Ostrogoths who were backed by the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno, Italy was ruled by a Germanic Ostrogothic ruling class. However, The people, laws, infrastructure, and institutions were still Roman. It’s not like after they conquered the territory, The people suddenly spoke a different language, Walked different roads, And followed new laws. Many of these people were still alive during the reign of Majorian, or the invasions of the Huns, and the oldest among them would have been alive during the reign of Honorius and the sack of Rome by the goths. Not only were the people the same, But the institutions were also the same. If you read Boethius’ “the Consolation of Philosophy”, you hear him speak a lot about the Roman senate, Which was still a political class that resides in Italy during the reign of Ostrogothic king Theoderic. And theoderic himself claimed he was ruling Italy as an imperial Fief for the eastern empire, Inheriting the position Odoacer claimed where “there is simply no need for a western emperor, We will rule Italy on behalf of the eastern emperor” This was not an isolated case either, So many of the Roman successor kingdoms got their start from claiming legitimacy from the east. King Clovis of the Frankish kingdom would famously convert to orthodoxy and gather territory through conquering Arian Christian lands, the Kingdom of Burgundy had a Roman constitution, and Mauritania would claim to be the inheritors of Rome. This political arrangement of multiple independent states working in a dejure sort of concord with one another and shared common institutions and fictions would be called the “roman commonwealth” by Tom holland. This would come to an end in Italy due to the imperial restoration project taken by Justinian, which not only resulted in the invasion of Italy by the Lombards, who were vastly different in ruling style and law from the Ostrogoths, But the justification for the conquest itself reinforced and established an idea that all of a sudden, The Ostrogothic Kingdom that had Roman laws, Roman peoples, Roman towns, And Roman classes was suddenly “not Roman” according to the East, so now, What were they? Many other kingdoms started to grapple with these questions and now all of a sudden, They weren’t Roman, And sought their destiny away from the east. The fall of the Roman Empire should not be understood as a singular event, rather it should be understood as a series of events, A sequential timeline of developments that gradually chipped away at Rome until something completely new was left in its place. Even the Byzantine empire, Which many have lauded as the true Rome (not wrongfully) was immensely different after the reign of Heraclius. And by the reign of the Macedonian dynasty, utterly unrecognizable. It’s still, technically, Rome, But it’s something entirely new as well

@Alejandro Maldonado so Justinian was meant to allow the Persian betrayal to keep taking the rich ERE holdings to secure Italy? That makes no sense. Regarding the rotation of generals, even Belasarius would have understood why. It's because alternatives create discontent, not because of fear of betrayal as Justinian kept fielding him. Without the plague they would have been able to comfortably reinforce and cement Italian control since they still retained so much even with the plague

What these polite people seem to ignore is that Justinians conquest marked the end of the Empire in the west. Before the campaigns the Barbarian kingdoms in the west, their Populatians saw themselves as fundamentally Roman, even the Senate still existed in Rome. But as the Byzantines started their „Reconquista“ the people in the west started to think that if the Romans „reconquer“ then maybe they are something else. And with these Invasions the Deromanisation really started in the west. Justinians policy in the end only made it clear that everything under his direct thumb was the Roman Empire, thus burying any sense of Romaness in the West

Btw agree that Byzantine is not roman, it's more like the offspring of the roman empire. Reasons: 1st: It's not based in Rome. 2nd: Does not speak latin. 3rd: Does not venerate the roman gods (yes I think the decay of roman empire also was desteny-bound with the fall of the roman religion). It started out roman but became it's own thing. Just like the city was first called New Rome but later Constantinople.

@@alkazaryyy Justinian and Emperors before him spoke Latin, Latin was their native language. Anyway, once Roman Empire became huge, the Eastern part was always way more powerful and many times richer. But it was still Roman Empire and Greeks called themselves as Romans

cmon trump, there were stinky advisors and generals that made the ostrogoth war fail, belisarius even worked through that to capture what he did; yeah the eternal peace was a bad deal, but even if it bought 20 years it would be a big help

Even though I'm slightly Pro-Trump. I found what his AI said in terms of Justinian's Reign pretty damning but somewhat true. Yes, alot of things went wrong & he definitely fucked up with making the *Eternal* Peace deal with Khosrow. 11,000 POUNDS of GOLD given to him & only 8 years later he was itching to break the Peace. It was a waste of money. I think in hindsight Justinian should've recruited more soldiers to replace the Eastern Front forces that were sent to Italy. At least enough to hold the line until reinforcements could return. But of course the plague might've stumped that idea He had an Empire with a population of 18 million with only 6-8 field Armies. What is that specifically? Possibly around 100 or 200k? Or less? I know it would've been expensive but it would've been worth it instead of paying off literally EVERYONE who threatened the borders of the Roman Empire. The whole Belisarius thing is a bit of an insult if you ask me though That Biden AI was spot on btw

Carthage and the Italian coast raked in cash and expanded trade lines. It took Phocus AND the Arabs to lose most of those holdings. It was the Gothic counter attack that ruined Italy, the fact they nearly torched Rome says it all. Italian holdings brought in cash and diplomatic opportunity until the Normans. If Trajan had a secret history people would be spewing the same nonsense. Anti-Justinian cope is anachronistic to sound smart and ignores the plague and subsequent factors

Trumps right though, after 476 the term “Roman Empire” is no longer used, the Byzantine Empire didn’t contain Rome, was Orthodox and not Catholic, was ethnically and culturally Hellenic and spoke Greek not Latin.
