Take a Tour of Presidio La Bahia! The oldest standing fort west of the Mississippi River, still stands today in Goliad, Texas. Presidio La Bahia, built here in 1749, is so rich in Texas history, that you can feel that history as you walk its grounds.
This historic fort in Texas played a role in the American Revolution and, many historians believe that the events that took place here had a direct impact on the final outcome in the Texas fight for Independence during the 19th century. Was it primarily built to defend against hostile Indians and lightly armed brigands? The ways the walls are laid out is straight out of the dark ages, not at all like the intricate and advanced star forts that were being built elsewhere in the Western world in the 18th Century.

Hi Jacob. Interesting point. We’ve not seen a fort older than La Bahia so we don’t have a reference point to compare. It was built as part of the Spanish occupation of this region to protect a group of Missions from hostile natives and anyone else who might be interested in the land (primarily the French). This was, I believe, the 3rd location for La Bahia. It wasn’t unusual for the Spanish to relocate their forts and missions multiple times in this region. Maybe that has something to do with how it was built.

While the design was outdated for the time, it did withstand a 4 month siege by the Spanish army in 1812-1813. During the Texian occupation improvements were made to make it more easily defended.
