I just found your channel and this is by far the BEST channel for accurate reviews of audio interfaces!, I obviously subscribed 🙂 One suggestion: it'd be great to include in the test SMAART transfer functions to see the phase response and group delay as I have found some interfaces induce a LOT of group delay and weird phase shift

Thanks for this Audio Interface Review. You have great and thorough videos. Well done! It has been helping me make a decision to find a budget Audio Interface for myself for my small studio. I used to own a PRESONUS about 15 years ago and things have changed a lot! Still looking at all of the options like PRESONUS, FOCUSRITE, M-AUDIO, MOTU, Etc. Cheers! 😀

WOW! That was the most thorough review I have ever heard on KZbin. Amazing. This is the ONLY review that tested the outputs. No other reviewer ever mentioned the output performance. Everyone wants to talk about input preamp performance, but how are you going to listen to that input performance, yes, from the outputs. The main reason I bought the PreSonus Studio 24c was for the DAC and output performance with the added benefit of MIDI DIN connections. My studio remains 100% hardware at this time. I own a DAW but don't use it anymore.

Excellent reviews. But would be nice to have reviews on the DAC clarity in comparison to similar interfaces. I work entirely in the box and am mainly interested in getting as pure a signal as possible into my monitors and headphones. You go into the depths of the tech specs but how does it sound in practice as a DAC compared to other interfaces. There is definitely a difference, my Mackie Onyx sounds more pure and open than the Behringer 204HD and Focusritte 2-2 2nd generation I have tried before. The best interface I have ever owned for dac quality was EMU 1212M, that had incredible conversion , really pure and flat as a pancake.

Excellent review again! MIDI in/out is a MUST for me as I have many high-end physical keyboard/synths dating all the way back to the 80's. This looks like a GREAT Audio/MIDI interface and will be picking one up! My Runner-up choice was the Roland Rubix22 as it was in the same price range and also has MIDI but it lacked the LED meter & "mix' button on the front which is fine for me, but my wife will be using this and I'm SURE she will no doubt appreciate those features! Thank you for taking the time to produce a very thorough review! SOLD!

Thank you for yet another in-depth review. It's so empowering to have these un-biased no nonsense reviews! Is there any way to check/review the robustness of the drivers and how they perform with some DAWs? With most of the 'Specs' these days very much acceptable for general usage, the problem these days is how the interfaces perform with certain DAWs (read - Pro Tools)

Excellent review, thanks. I went ahead and purchased one of those. I was blown away by the sound quality and the sound image/stage. Those excellent crosstalk numbers really make a difference. I am using 32 ohm headphones and indeed the high phone output impedance proved to be a problem but I drove them from the "main out" outputs and problem solved - crystal-clear sound. I just use a switch to change routing from headphones to speakers and vice versa. I found a pretty neat use for the headphone output too: I record directly in stereo instruments that are normally mono, using my Soundblaster's line-in, for reviewing my progress with my bass guitar, in Audacity which is much more convenient and hassle-free compared to real DAWs :).
@ClarkSpencer1
@ClarkSpencer1 Жыл бұрын
what you mean by "main out" ? so u bought this interface and plugged headphones not to inferface but to your pc/laptop?
@MotoGreciaMarios
@MotoGreciaMarios Жыл бұрын
@@ClarkSpencer1 The interface has two outputs - one that goes to speakers ("main" out) and one that is intended for headphones. What I did was connect the headphones to the speaker ("main") output and the headphone output is plugged in the Line-In of the Soundblaster for real-time "loopback" style recording in Audacity, in stereo. I use a switch to divert the "main" out from the headphones to my desktop monitors. Be advised, I bought the interface used and I can not use the accompanying DAW/software, only the basic driver is functional so I can't have loopback any other way.

What is exactly the problem of using 32 ohms headphones with studio 24c ? How it manifests practically ? Also can you describe more specifically how you deal with this problem, please ? Thanks in advance !
@MotoGreciaMarios
@MotoGreciaMarios 2 ай бұрын
@@cristianturcan7659Ιt's very simple: if you plug headphones into the headphone output jack you'll have more bass than normal (actually bass is normal and for everything else there is less of). Solution: plug them to the main out instead, using an adaptor plug. If you also need to drive speakers use a switch. Another solution would be to use a dedicated headphone amp between the headphone output of the Studio 24c and the headphones themselves. That's what I eventually did.

It would be interesting to see the studio 68c. It's got a lot more gain on tap in the preamp than the 24c - I believe presonus quotes max of +80dB on the 68c and +50dB on the 24c. Might be running on a higher voltage rail than the bus powered 24c.

I own the 24c since last year. When I have bought it, I was new to this (interface, audio, etc.). I actually use a AT2020 condensor mic (plug XLR) and I recently bought a Presonus PD70. After testing the studio 24c, do you think it could be a good add on to buy a pre amp for my dynamic Mic? Cause honestlay, I need to crank the gain almost the the rough to be able to get a decent recording (between -9 and -6dB) I know that the two input are already preamp, but I'm not quite sure it's enough. Since my gain is really high, the room tone is also high. Thank you! Very good review though

Hey, Julian. Hope you're ok. In your review about the Motu M2 (around 8min50s) it's show a RTL of 15.9 ms for a Sample Rate of 48 kHz and a Buffer Size of 128 samples. This Presonus Studio 24c has a RTL of 9.5 ms for the same other parameters. It's a huge difference. Is that correct? I always tought the Motu M2 offered better RTL times. Thank you for your reviews, they really helps.

Those settings in FL Studio ASIO with the M4 get me 3 ms, after plugins 9 ms. Not specified whether that's round-trip but I can confirm the latency feels low and response is pretty snappy.
@Soloist1983
@Soloist1983 3 жыл бұрын
Tascam might have the best latency, you can set their ASIO to 4 SAMPLES, and apparently it's stable due to an in-house driver they created; probably takes a decent computer to make it very stable but it's worth checking out
@generalawareness101
@generalawareness101 3 жыл бұрын
On my Windows 10 system the lowest I can do is around 10ms-12ms (sample rate doesn't matter) and using ASIO I managed to get down to 1ms. I was shocked but 3ms on the M2 was fine using FL Studio and the MOTU ASIO driver. Now having said that MOTU M2 is crap and I will never ever touch another of their products. I purchased two different ones from two different sellers in a 4-6 week timespan and both died on me in under 10 mins. The first was 8-10s of recording then USB said it was there but could not handshake with it so dead. Yesterday evening I went to use the second one and it wouldn't even turn on. I thought my USB port was blown by it but I swapped over my kybd and it worked but still the M2 was dead. I pulled out the cable from its back and re-inserted it and flipped the on switch and everything work EXCEPT no computer will detect that anything is even plugged in. That makes two hardware failures and I suspect it has to do with everything being ramped up to keep up with the human malware causing a mad rush for devices so QC is gone and the machines are being pushed too hard. Anyone who reads this you have been warned. Oh, and USB-C sucks and I hate it. Cables are expensive at ~8 USD per foot for a real one and the included 1m is too short and being USB 2 the limit is 5m so give us a 2m one and all would be fine but 1m I couldn't work with very well.
@nimrodery
@nimrodery 3 жыл бұрын

@@nimrodery I am in the USA so we come first with a USA company like MOTU and it took 6 weeks for them to go back up for sale (seems to be in a six week cycle on Amazon in the USA). Yes, they are working overtime but simply can't keep up. Fact is another reviewer on YT said many people are complaining about this lately from reviews so I am not alone (he is a M2 fanboy too so was not easy for him to say that). I compared the dac sound quality of the focusrite, steinberg and audient id14. I only use the mic input for measuring and eq of my monitors. I tested on jbl lsr30x monitors. I really thought all three units would sound the exact same way besides maybe noise floor. The audient is the weirdest one. It has a high end treble lift and its pretty noticeable. The focusrite just sounded like it had a lower quality dac in general. Everything had a sort of metallic sound to it. Kinda like going from cd bitrate to 320. Most people wouldnt notice but on revealing speakers its there. The steinberg had nothing weird about the sound. Smoother than the focusrite and similar to the audient minus the high end lift. The steinberg is also the heaviest.

Hi Julian and thank you for your precious reviews! I'm buying the PreSonus Studio 24 C and I'm searching for the most suitable headphones to use with that interface. In one of your videos you say that the impedance of the headphones should be at least 8 time the impedance of the phones amp on the interface. The PreSonus has a headphones amp impedance of 22 ohms (@1Khz), and you say that the right headphones should have 80 or 150 ohms. In the table at 8:36 I see that the PreSonus works better with headphones with impedance of 32ohm (output power of 51,20 mw) instead of headphones with impedance of 150 ohms (output power of 23,56 mw). I expected the exact oppsite. Why? In this video you suggest the Sennheiser HD5xs, but I can't find them. Could you please advice me other models of headphones that work well with the interface? For a guitarist that use programs like Amplitube and Bias FX which of the two cards is better between this and Focusrite 2i2? another question, but the Presonus c24 doesn't have the Line button, how do you go from mic input to instrument and line?

Thank you so much for your very helpful video. Well done! I'm using Sennheiser HD 650 headphones which have an impedance of 300 ohms. Wondering if using a separate headphone amplifier would make any difference in regard to the frequency shift issue?

Hi Julian! Is there any possibility you could do a series of reviews on 8 channel audio interfaces such as Focusrite 18i20 3rd gen vs Presonus 1824c and so on. Your reviews are the best onine by a golden mile! Extremely thorough with something for everyone including the geeks 😂

I got the Studio 26c today, I’ve measured the RTL with the RTL Utility and an analog loop, I got 9,89ms at 48khz 128 samples, both on my laptop which has intel i7-1265u and on my desktop which has Ryzen 5900x, both 32GB RAM. Amazing!! I don’t know what is the impedance of the headphone out, I’ll check how to measure it in case. Which are the headphones you suggested with the 24c? Sennheiser HD58x (I’ve seen they have 150ohm impedance)?? I didn’t get them exactly in the video…

I own 24c. Is it possible to have a different signal through the headphone jack than the main . Would be good for live performance and practicing for live. Could PreSonus do this in an update?

👏 Yaayyy Julian you finally reviewed the PreSonus Studio audio interface 😁 (even though I wish you would of reviewed the 26c 😔, it has a 80dB of gain 😏)... 😮 Wow! I thought the output of the interface was the flattest I ever heard, but from your review I can tell I've been fooled by PreSonus 😂... I guess I either have to jump on the Focusrite or SSL band wagon then for true flat output 🤓. Thank you for revealing the truth to us Julian 😁. I've definitely subscribing to your channel now 😁... #GodBless you my brother ✊😎

Knowledgeable review. I’d like to see you compare this to the AudioBox USB 96. Is there really an advantage to moving to USB-C?
@JulianKrause
@JulianKrause 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I have made a review about the AudioBox USB 96 and it is considerably worse than the Studio 24c. But this has nothing to do with the USB-C. With most audio interfaces you don't really gain anything with USB-C aside from that it's a more universal connector.

I'm just starting out & I got a 2012 MacBook pro with 512 GB SSD a i7 Processor and 16GB memory & I just ordered the new M-Audio Oxygen Pro 49 Key Controller. And my question is have you tried out the mini ports? & will it work well with the free Mac software be GarageBand and the free Sampler called TX16Wx??? & does the mic 🎤 pre amps put out a better quality gain then the Focusrite Scarlett 3rd Generation interfaces? I do like the specs on the Motu MK2 I hope that you can help me make the right choice cause I'm thinking about getting me the $80.00 Samson C01 Large Diaphragm Condenser mic 🎙️ to start out with

Which is more valuable, high dynamic range for pre-amps, or low EIN? M-audio air 192/4 has an average/decent dynamic range but very low EIN, while EVO-4 has a very high dynamic range, but an OK EIN. In the music recording/production context, which one would be more valuable? Thanks.

I am happy with mine and only wish I had the money to upgrade to the multichannel units. I am using presonus small monitors and they sound good to my ears though I would like hefty ones instead. I have smaller fingers so the 24c front panel isn't a problem for me but I can see where it would be for someone else. Over all I have had good luck with Presonus and this kicks ass compared to my old firewire 410. and the virtual ins are great.
