A homesteading family with 2 milk cows needs a way to preserve excess milk. I have been making butter, cheese, and yougart since the 2nd cow was introduced. The pantry is lean on dairy and we have used some of our garden harvest making extra space. This is a perfect time to fill our shelves with canned milk before we have to dry off a cow in the summer months. Are you milking a cow and need to do some canning? This method is not USDA or Ball Canning approved but has been done successfully for generations by homesteading families. Imagine years in the great depression or recent pandemic when availability was scarce. We are a family of 7 with 4 men, 1 woman, 1 young girl and 1 young boy. Milk is a daily essential in our home.
