Pressure Washer Pump Repaired - It’s NOT the Unload Valve - Easy $4.00 Fix! - Part 1 of 3

This Excell 2800 pressure washer just stopped pumping pressurized water while I was cleaning my swimming pool cover. I did notice over the last few years that that I would lose pressure temporarily thinking it was just air in the lines but this was not the case and it’s NOT the Unload Valve so Watch the video and find out why it finally quit working. UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust kzbin.infoUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.

I admire you for figuring it out. We could not get ours going, ordered a replacement pump and it has a sheared off brass bolt right out of the box, Of course we could not tell that it was until it was installed and cranked up and bluey! The bolt head flew off! We're sending it back, get a replacement. I am so sick of that pressure washer. It was my bright idea to try and repair it, now I want to forget the whole thing. :(

His terminology is still correct . Woodruff key is older term. Yes they have a rounded end . But it's the same concept, stop shaming the guy for his use of words .

You probably already have your pressure washer fixed by now, BUT OK! Yes i have a TroyBuilt i bought Refurbished from Sears in 2010 AND IT HAS BEEN A GREAT MACHINE!!! Well last year it just went KA PUT on a job i had to finish, So i figured it was time to R & R the pump. When i took the pump off i quickly discovered there was a problem THERE WAS NO KEY. so i figured just go to ACE HARDWARE and pickup a small 1/4 inch X 1/4 inch key square stock, Well when i went to install it the pump STILL turned and was DEFINITELY not ENGAGING with the engine. I was stumped for about 1/2hr. when i finally RELIESED that one side (that engages engine to the pump) HAD TO BE LONGER/THICKER by about 1/16 of an inch to 1/8 of an inch. So i grabbed my mig welder and piled on the material (VERY CAREFULLY) then when i was done i grinded the taller side of the key flat and installed on the shaft, BUTT the key would NOT SIT still when i wanted to install the pump on the engine shaft SO i tack welded the key on the engine shaft. aaaaannnd WA LA the pressure washer finished the job!! and has worked ever since. PRAISE BE TO GOD!!

I think its a shear key to save the pump and engine,like you have in snow throwers.

Pretty sure they'd use a soft aluminum key to protect the pump and engine if the pressure relief system fails and there's a hydrostatic lock. Over the years it probably ground itself to powder as you suggested. Good on you for figuring it out.

Gene Ressler....I’ll bet your right about that the key must have been aluminum. I think the new key is steel ... not sure but it’s been working fine so far. Thanks for the explanation.

Its possible but....the metal fragment he pulled out in the video appeared to be magnetic. It looked as if it was magnetically sticking to the tip of his scratch ask/ice pick...could've been sticky with grease.

@@mikenakano9655 keys are steel or aluminum . Check any Briggs and Stratton engine and you will find an aluminum key . Been that way for 40 yrs

At 12:14 you can see that the keyway (slot) on the engine crankshaft has a "mark" in it, near the engine. Looks like the key got loose from wear and walked toward the engine in the keyway. Then it finally got loose enough, and worn small enough, that it finally came out, causing the "mark" in the crankshaft when it left the keyway.

they make that key of some short of plastic, so if the water pump fails the gasoline engine will not break it into pieces. like have a soft bolt on your farm plow, cheaper to replace a bolt that a broken arm on a tracktor plow

I put my pump back together today after replacing 3 check valves, that is when I noticed I had no keyway. I was lucky. I had some 3/16 th metal in the shop and made one. Got it together, and water went right through it out these two small channels on the head of the pump. It was getting dark and I was done for the day. Do you have any clue as what I did wrong?

How in the heck did you get the unloader valve loose from the pump? Its a brass nut and it seems like it just can’t be broke loose. Almost seems like I need to put an impact wrench on it!! Thanks

I’ve never seen one missing the key way, strange thing for sure I’ve rebuilt a lot of them and kits are not that high price I try E replacement parts first

Phillip Hall … thanks for the tip. Yea the key was shredded unfortunately I wiped the pump clean and didn’t show the metal fragments but the key was definitely there just in very small pieces.

my guess is that whoever used a 3/16" x 1" keystock instead of 1/4" x the length of the slot. so as it shifted it shredded the bar stock. steel key stock won't shred like that but aluminum key stock that will sacrifices the key stock instead of the pump or the motor.

HOPE … I’m not sure what size key the factory used when building this model. I’ve owned it since it was new and never ran into this problem until it just stopped producing pressure. Like you said the key must have been aluminum otherwise it would have shredded the pump.

Roberta Preston… No I couldn’t find anything that caused the shaft to lock up. I’m thinking the key may have shifted out of position and the crankshaft just destroyed the key.

The only part you'll need to get endless service, is a flux capacitor. Order one and you'll never regret it.

Eagle Media…. I believe the key was shredding over a long period of time and it finally completely disintegrated the first 90 seconds of operation at the beginning of the spring season when I went to use it. So this was not just a quick failure.

That is a standard square key, not a Woodruff key.

Looks like someone left the key out...the key is made of steel..it would have trashed the pump had it done what you suggested...its a 1/4 key
