Thanks for this, Mike. I have a Status pressing of the We Three album by Roy Haynes; VG++, almost mint, but not sealed. And it sounds absolutely terrible!

A lesson to collectors- you can use every multi hundred step OCD cleaning ritual and hundreds of thousands of dollars of cavitation and ultrasonic machines. Nothing you can do will reduce the noise of recycled vinyl. Nothing.

Great video! I have a good number of Prestige / New Jazz records that I need to revisit to see if I can spot any that were pressed on recycled vinyl. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks Brian, be curious to know if you spot any -- definitely check the 1963-64 pressings -- Mike

What about the sessions that only appeared on Status and on recycled vinyl? As far as I know Ahmed Abdul Malik's Spellbound is the only one.
@JazzBums8 ай бұрын
Not sure, there are a handful of those Status only releases and I don’t have any to check unfortunately. It seems like it’s all inconsistent and each pressing is its own unique case. - Mike

Thanks Mike - interesting and helpful. I too tend to avoid Status reissues and almost always opt for OJC New Jazz reissues over the OGs not so much for price considerations (although that helps) but to avoid the recycled vinyl.

Yeah, it's such a bummer. I've passed up some excellent titles just because they're on status. -- Mike

Thanks Mike I have 69 stereo reissue of the Blue Moods. I was u aware of the possibility of recycled vinyl. I'll have to spin this again tonight
@JazzBums8 ай бұрын
I just took a look on Discogs and that '69 blue label looks like it is on pure vinyl -- at least from what I can tell on the pictures. I don't think it was recorded in stereo in 1957, so I wonder if they just slapped "stereo" on it or rechanneled. If you give it a listen, let me know what you think. -- Mike

Great recycle vinyl talk Mike I have that same Red Garland album my copy is a Prestige Blue Stereo pressing it has no hiss . My John Wright Mr. soul on Black and Silver Prestige has hiss but on the instruments come in it quiets the hiss that so true about those New Jazz titles it’s crazy how much the sellers are asking for I hope for more reissues the sound would be better. I’m definitely aware sometimes of the hiss lately I’ve been passing on the New Jazz titles and I avoid the Black and Silver Prestige pressings too much hiss .
@JazzBums8 ай бұрын
Yeah, there is so much variation on these Prestige pressings. I've been told by others that those black and silver labels can have hiss, too. I don't believe I have any to test (yet) -- Mike

So interesting! Not an issue I had ever consciously thought about.... BTW just picked up the Pablo Box set reissue (1970s) of all the Art Tatum Group Masterpieces records. Inspired by you showing your early pressing of one of these. Yet to clean and listen - hoping for the best sonically...

Very cool, Mark! Art Tatum is sorely underrepresented in my collection. I need to check out those Pablo boxes myself. Thanks! -- Mike

@@JazzBums I have zero Art Tatum, so this seemed like a good place to start (after the RSD release). There's also a Pablo box of his solo recordings.

I have the same problems, my last experience was a gold trident label Saxophone Colossus wich has hiss. Mostly it is overpowered from the music and the hiss is at its loudest in the lead in groove. To me it is listenable, but I still would prefer a better pressing. This is what you have to deal with with Prestige, no way around it. What I really hate is groove distortion, that's a no go for me and I also don't want to sell these records because I know the future owner will not like them. Luckily I had just one experience with that.
@JazzBums8 ай бұрын
Yeah, that a good point. That Red Garland is a piano trio, so the hiss is especially noticeable, whereas Sax Colossus has Rollins burnin over everyone and everything, which can make a huge difference. -- Mike

Do you see this with Jazzland as well?

I haven’t noticed it on Jazzland. I have about 14-15 Jazzland titles and most sound very good

@@JazzBums Yes Mike & co-bums - I'll like to join you again soon 🙂 I've added a good bunch records to my collection lately and also digged in to a small Danish record label that made recordings in New York - but only lasted 2 years. And I just got home from Bologna, Italy with some nice findings as well. As you know the time of the stream can be a little challenging for us Europeans 😴, so I might first be able to participate in the very end of the month. But I'll see you there!

CONSUMER DECEPTION in 2 words = not much analyzed but generally known subject among the aficionados : another proof how greedy and corrupt some of the premier cmpnies were - even in the zenith of the genre s heyday !!! Cutting costs and maximizing profit in this way sounds and refers to sort of Morris Levy & Co racket style operational mode. Rlte was a mid-level jazz lbl, both artistically and commercially, besides the dude owning Birdland - and still had the nerve to operate the exploitative way de did, as the biography published a decade or so ago testifies. Basie was the biggest name on Rlte, and there are a few vids on the forum if you search under the said name of the owner. But this from Bob Weinstock is a sad piece of news, though I ve collided w the issue thru some Ptige tles in my coll. ALSO : some early releases on JUBILEE carry the feature, 4ex the real thick-vinyled DELLA REESE : Story Of The Blues.
