The failsafe option should have been integrated into Diamond City. Good Minuteman run? Diamond City supports them. Enemy of Minutemen? Well the real Minutemen ended at Quincy, Preston is just a pretender, but Diamond City endures without them. Good BOS run? They're strong and can help bring order to the Commonwealth. Enemies? They're thugs who only want to strip mine it, they need to be repelled. Align with or destroy Institute? The whole “Minutemen are the failsafe” isn’t the only reason the game forces you into them. It’s because Bethesda forced this settlement system into an RPG, and so much of it hangs on what you do with the Minutemen. The BoS hardly does anything with settlements. The Institute doesn’t do a damn thing, and neither does the Railroad. What they should have done is implement the raider system into the main game from the start, rather than forcing it on you in a DLC that many would have started after being mostly done with the game.
@courier69602 жыл бұрын
Bethesda should have done a lot of things “from the start” with this game. So many bad choices and missed opportunities. That’s what happens when you get writers who don’t understand or care about the source material, and make decisions only for the sake of impressing the big wigs and for marketing. The settlement system was just a bad idea in the first place. There’s is physically no way of inserting a ton of fully player customizable locations that produce infinite amounts of materials without it being an absolutely exploit, glitch, and bug riddled nightmare. Not to mention since there’s no real building physics in this engine you can build things that ruin immersion or look downright ridiculous. This system so obviously put a massive strain on development time, considering that it effectively works as a replacement for towns and cities (when in no way it works as a replacement) and that so many story elements and mechanics were just left on the drawing board.

@MothmanOfficialWva4 ай бұрын
@@ociferit’s strange how much effort they put into the settlement system and then essentially lock it behind one faction. Sure, you can “claim” settlements for other factions, but there’s no real story significance (outside of the safehouses). Maybe if each faction had a different way of doing settlements? Maybe for the Brotherhood, you can claim “outposts” which naturally have higher defense numbers than usual settlements, but exclude ghoul and synth settlers, decreasing overall settler count. The institute can try to redeem themselves in the eyes of the commonwealth (if you’re trying to do a “good institute” thing). Due to their technological advancements, you’d have higher food and water resource counts, but the stigma that the institute holds leads to overall lower settlement happiness. Railroad is the most difficult, as their whole “in the shadows” ideology goes against public settlements. But perhaps when the institute is destroyed they may become a more public organization. If so, perhaps an expansion to the safehouse system that they already have would be good. That leaves the minuteman as a “middle ground” option where they don’t have the benefits nor the downsides of the other factions, allowing for the minutemen to be the most flexible.

It's funny to me that you guys ask for more choice and your solution is to restrict your choices further. I see mods for Skyrim that have you pick a class at the start and it forever locks any other unrelated skill trees. In this situation you'd rather be permanently locked out of interacting with Preston and the minutemen because of this. If you want consequences then make them using your honor. Don't talk to Preston anymore. Don't invest in certain skill trees. It's as simple as that. Why does the game need to do it for you? What about people who don't care about the game punishing you for stuff? What if those people don't know doing something will permanently lock them out of doing things? Then they're screwed. Maybe they really wanted to do both of those things but now they are unable. That doesn't sound fun to me.

As for him leaving the door open should you want to redeem yourself, why would you actively make enemies with the single most dangerous person in the wasteland? That's simultaneously signing your death warrant, and cutting yourself off from the one guy who can actually get things done. Preston saw firsthand what you could do at the start of the game. Him turning on you would be as much dissonance as in Skyrim when you kill a dragon in 3 hits wearing daedric armor with several daedric artifacts on your hip and a random thief has the audacity to try and rob you.

So why in god's name, did they decide to give you neither the chance to go against the minutemen or to be friendly with Preston again? I only took one 3 settlements. Three of my own 30 god damn settlements. I took them by paying everyone involved damn good money and noone was hurt. Later on I killed all 3 raider gangs. When I returned to Preston, I got this resction. The fuck? I saved that guys life, saved his sorry little excuse of a mission at the beginning of the game, I rebuilt the minutemen, I am his general and I led the nicest raiders in the world, before killing them all, for the sake of them still being raiders and freed the vendors, creating a second Diamond City in Nuka World. Why does he hate me? I really dont get that. Also, how the hell did he find out? The whole ordeal is immersion breaking ans it makes the minutemen an even dumber faction. If no consequences are involved and you cant do anything to right your mistake, then they should just not make that a story in the first place. Preston is mad at you? Okay, then he might shoot you. Maybe he get's you kicked out of the minutemen, maybe he can be convinced to go evil too or maybe you can appease him with words and convince him (either by lying or telling the truth) that you are not evil. You have so much freedom to do what you choose in these games. With minimal restrictions. The game doesn't need to hold your hand and create the game you want. You can do it yourself. Do you not want to be the guy who decides the fate of the wasteland? Ignore the main story. If you don't want to be the Dragonborn hero of legend and only a war hero of the empire? The real problem is that the minutemen and Preston serve basically the same role as Yes Man from NV, you also can't lock yourself out of that quest line but no one complains about that. The reason being Bethesda doesn't understand how to write a neutral independent faction and so you get this. It doesn't help that they put the minutemen up front and center right at the beginning of the game where as you are introduced to Yes Man after you've gotten a feel for the other factions so the glaring restrictions of the game are much more noticeable.

Fallout 4's gameplay makes a few decisions like that seem really stupid yeah lol. Canonical story wise, I imagine how they thought it should play out is. Sole survivor helps Preston, goes back to sanctuary with them, helps them set up some food, water, beds, and defense. Preston mentions the another settlement needs help, and the sole survivors agrees to go help. A few days or a day later, they return, the settlement has been helped, agreed to join the group that was 1 man from dying, and knowing he's a soldier, not a leader, offers this person who is pretty much his last hope of rebuilding the group he idolized as a child the role of leader after seeing them willing to take charge and actually put in the effort to help people in need at the risk of their own life, fighting off an entire gang of raiders single handedly or with Codsworth or Dogmeat, to help someone just because it's the right thing. Gameplay wise it's just walk to this somewhat close by area, shoot up a few low level raiders, now he likes you. They also wait until his LAST companion conversation for him to explain why you were so important to him. Dude was borderline suicidal and this person who is basically the embodiment of the ideals of the minutemen shows up to save him and the people he wanted to protect. They wrote him like you'd write a character in a book or movie, where pacing and stuff are important, but in a game where you can do stuff in a day and killing 20 raiders in a heavily guarded factory is no big deal it seems silly. My last thing I'd say is, when he promoted you to general, he did put his trust in you, you agreed to become general, and he believed you'd follow through, now he sees it's a mistake and won't ever be able to believe in you again. Anyways, this shit is so poorly written for a video game where you can massacre the people he sent you to help and he just never brings it up.

Why? Why are you... expecting so much? Can't you see? There's no hope. They always played save. Unless they matured, there's nothing we can do.

After beating the game with the brotherhood ending, knight Ryhs very somberly apologized to me and told me he understood and was willing to take any punitive action against him. I told him not to worry about it it. I talk to him immediately after and he says something like “why am i looking at you, you have a job to go do. Get lost”

Fallout 1 and 2 player: I messed up so bad that the game became almost unwinnable, even resulting in everyone in my vault or tribe dying esp when I betrayed them. Fallout 4 Player: So, I joined the raiders and have done unspeakable things to innocent people. Minutemen second in command: You betrayed the entire commonwealth by becoming the very thing you promised to destroy. I never want to speak with you again, our friendship is over but also you can say the General of the Minutemen we will all keep taking your orders and there is a settlement that needs your help. I'll mark it on your map. So this is what playing a game with no consequences is like. Where you can basically become the Hitler of the wasteland while also simultaneously still in charge of the people trying to defend it and all that happens is you get scolded by one of your subordinates. Brilliant. So I guess the sole survivor just endlessly toys with the Commonwealth building, raiding/destroying and rebuilding settlements and everyone is not only aware of this, but is okay to just mildly annoyed with it. Bethesda Game Studios, everyone!

Sounds Like the Commonwealth is the hell, and the player is the punishmente all those who reach there has to suffer for the rest of their existence.

One thing that is really mind boggling is if you make any sort of criticism about Fallout 4 or any other recent Bugthesda game on Reddit or any other typical site on the internet people just start REEEEEing like crazy. They still defend the games even if you make great examples (with proof) on why their games are bad. Bethesda fans are so damn delusional that it is quite sad that they actually believe these games are good. Most of them will never experience a quality game like New Vegas or the classic Fallout games made by Interplay. But to be fair they probably don't have the attention span to get through those so called "Old and outdated games."

@@CynicalAnomaly205 Don't get me wrong, there is good in FO4, interesting ideas and game mechanics, the writing is just terrible and a lot of it is because Bethesda is coddling the players so much, like they have zero confidence most of their player base won't rage quit the first time one of their decisions has consequences. I don't think you can even get cut off from the other factions in FO4 until near the end of the game when the story suddenly forces this to be case. They have hold your hand by telling you "if you do this you can't complete any of the other quest lines".

@@CynicalAnomaly205There goes another Classic Fallout elitist acting like he is better than everyone else and not toxic in the slightest. We're defending the games because we're tired of you sheeple constantly shitting on them every five minutes and also telling us what we can and can't like. Just let us enjoy the games we want to enjoy and leave us alone, for fucks sake.

@@CynicalAnomaly205I mean I started playing it a couple days ago and it doest seem so bad, sure there seems to be some stuff that needs improvement but the main thing people say about the game is “missed opportunities” which means the game isn’t bad it just could’ve been better if they did this. But I think it’s a pretty good game
