“Tribes” is one of my best-known integrated percussive tunes. It first appeared in my 1994 instructional video The Guitar Of Preston Reed: Expanding The Realm Of Acoustic Playing. The following year it was released on my album Metal. In the intro to the video - filmed by Andrew Jurman in 1995 at Milestones in Rochester NY - I explain my concept of starting a solo acoustic guitar composition with a drum groove…and then adding the guitar into it.

When you consider he was one of the pioneers of that style - WAY before Candyrat, way before Kaki King, and way before Andy Mckee, that's nothing to sneeze at. Michael Hedges pioneered some of it as well, but Preston took the open-tuning tapping thing to a new level. So what you're hearing is basically stuff that he invented. So to have been such an influence in the acoustic guitar world, knowing that he invented much of what you see here- is in fact, an extraordinary thing.
