I've always thought the Maesters were orchestrating an elaborate conspiracy to kill off the dragons and perhaps overthrow the Targaryens. Perhaps George RR Martin got the idea from the Templars and their allies in the Catholic Church working to destroy the Capetian dynasty. If you read the Accursed Kings you would know what I mean.

When I got the book, I went straight to the sections on Jaehaerys I, Viserys I and Aegon II. Maester Yandel (the author of World) differs from Gyldayn on several things (many of them problems I pointed out in the videos). It's an interesting read side by side with The Rogue Prince and the Princess and the Queen.

P. 45 Same paragraph mentioned a rumor Lord Hightower offered his youngest daughter, only to be politely declined. Feel like this really falls in with your theory, interested to see the next video!

Got my copy on the 28th, I'm about 100 pages in so far. I'm really trying to read carefully and take into account the author but haven't been able to find much that would shed light on the ASOIAF series or any theories yet. I listened to the whole interview GRRM gave this past sunday about the book and was pretty disappointed to hear that GRRM wrote more detailed stories about the history that this book discusses but that he didn't want to reveal most of the information yet and most of the book is Elio's and Linda's (both fans) summary of George's stories. He said that the more detailed stories might be published at a later time. If I'm remembering correctly GRRM said that Gyldayn is his guy so GRRM would have written anything by Gyldayn and then Maester Yandel would be Elio / Linda (the 2 fans) - I think I have that straight but correct me if I have the wrong names or wrong connection. Spoilers ahead for The World of Ice and Fire so be warned. I had seen it speculated before that the valaryan sword of Visenya, Dark Sister, might be a short sword but the book confirms it was a long sword. I was hoping for more in the part about the false spring and Harrenhal tourney but it was still interesting to get more of what the mad King was thinking at the time. It seems strange that Aery(mad king) and Rhaegar were so much at odds with each other leading up to Robert's Rebellion but then as far as we know Aerys and Rhaegar fought together to keep Targaryen rule - are we perhaps missing something? The the sunday interview when talking about the picture of Dunk on the Kings Guard facing the laughing storm in single combat GRRM seems very secretive about it and made me think there was something telling in that story but it seems that Dunk had to fight him due to one of Aegon V's son's not marrying his daughter - not sure what that really shows about the bigger story. Maybe he just wanted to save that for a Dunk and Egg story.

You are correct. Anything aside by Gyldayn is GRRM writing. Aegon's Conquest and 10,000 ships which are his as well. Aerys and Rhaegar had their issues, but neither wanted to see Robert win. Aerys feared that Rhaegar was trying to overthrow him and Rhaegar mentioned that we was thinking about "calling a council" whatever that means exactly.

Preston Jacobs I don't remember from the novels if Jamie or Jon con had any memory's of Aerys and rhaegar having Animosity towards each other or at least Aerys to Rhaegar. If Aerys thought Rhaegar was trying to overthrow him then why did he kill Rickard and brandon stark. doesn't make sense. well then again he was the mad king. I also find it funny that Roberts reign chapter was short (only one page) and called the Glorious reign. like it was perfect.

Preston Jacobs In the section about the Night's King it mentions that his corpse bride could be a lady from the Barrowlands that is associated with graves. Could this be associated with Lady Dustin in the current story? She is a Ryswell that married a Dustin - I think both are in the Barrowlands. As far as her association with graves - she makes Theon take her into the crypts. Maybe also the issue with her husband's bones not being brought back by Ned - so her husband's grave is unknown or she is searching for his grave. Perhaps I'm reaching too far here.

so when i started listening to your videos, they seemed weak , not fancy at all . one could even make the argument that your voice is quite unpleasant in comparison to the other videos on youtube (its evident you don't have the same audio equipment as others ). alt shift x videos. and civilization ex videos. but your theories and research is just unparalleled .a lot of other theory videos are just vomits and rehashes of ideas floating on the internet. yours are quite original . you approach this without emotional attachment to any characters or family name. like a coldness that i could only sense out of a historian (almost like a mini george r r martin.) in a documentary trying to make sense of events rather than a fanboy. i think thats why your videos are good . they are very arithmetic in nature and quite meticulous. i don't think you will convince many fans though even though your absolutely right about a lot of things. and the reason will simply be because a lot of fans won't want to see the truth behind a lot of their favorite characters. i have had more fun watching your videos than a lot of episodes in hbo . i dont even know if this is praise . see what your videos have done.

Thank you Preston Jacobs for all your hard work. As with the other videos it's fantastic..... I'm curious to hear your opinion though. Wild dragons like danys dragons are just that..... Wild. She can't do anything with them because of it. We know that the greyjoys have a horn that supposedly will allow someone to control a dragon. But my question is. How did the targaryns control all these dragons in the beginning? There has to be something magical involved. And would most likely be passed down by the maesters so be easy for them to hide and deny it ever existing. But what am I and dany missing? What will bind a dragon?

Its certainly a big mystery. It seems Valayrians have an easier time controlling dragons than others because of their blood, but why? Some theorize magic in their blood. Others say genetic engineering of dragons. I think "calling" a dragon is a very important aspect. Drogon was called to the pit in Meereen as was Syrax in KL during the riots. How was it done? I initially thought that pig's blood brought Drogon in, but I'm not so sure anymore. The Faith of the Seven, someone in Meereen (the House of Pahl?) and possibly the Hightowers at Tumbleton figured out how to call dragons.

I disagree with the assertion that the war was not a likely outcome of the grab for power. It's been mentioned that Rhaenrya had no ill will toward the Greens upon Alicent first marrying her father, but by the time of her father's death, there was animosity all over. Just look at the entire sequence of when Aemond lost his eye: it plays out almost like the Stark and Lannister kids on the Kingsroad, with Alicent firmly in a Cersei role. There was NO way these two sides were going to sort any of this out, it had gone on too long and the Greens grab for power was too bold. That's not to say that the Maesters might not have been angling for a war. But I don't think they really had to try very hard at that point.

Very good video, hard to argue that the maesters aren't up to something... Talking of the Dance, I'd like to hear your thoughts on dragon riding. I felt the purpose of Nettles, specifically described as dark, was to show you don't have to be of Valyrian/Targ blood to ride a dragon. More interesting, perhaps, is Ulf the White who rides a great dragon, despite being a rather pathetic character, whichever way you look at it.

It is theorized that she is a distant targaryen bastard as are all the dragonseeds. Just like warging, you have to posses some drop of the magical blood to be able attempt magical feats. Considering Valyria was an apex of magic, they possibly tied their blood to the dragons (which can explain all the draconic looking still births) that can be easily passed from parent to child. It also explains why they practiced incest to keep the bloodline "pure", more pure blood = more dragonriders. While marrying outside gives a hit or miss, similar to recessive genes.

Dunk and Egg are really excellent stories (better than Ice and Fire page for page), but they don't explain Summerhall at all. For a long time I've steered clear of discussing the meaning of various prophecy because its so open to interpretation. But, I am slowly forming a big theory about the prophecies and how Summerhall and Jenny of Oldstones fits into it. Eventually, there will be a video, but I'm not sure when.

Yes, I've already bought it. As literature, it's not really that great, but its a got a bunch of little fun facts for the big fans. The artwork is great. It does spend a lot of time on things that we know aren't going to part of the main story (i.e. past Targaryen kings, the far east) and little time on things that will be (i..e Slaver Bay, Qarth, the God's Eye)

Preston, Who do you think is playing the current anti-targ, Maester roles in the saga? Shavepate, Tyrion, Marwyn? Was there any deeper significance to Victarons murder of the Maester from the Reach? Or was it him just being Victaron?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught the anti-Maester blacklash! Yes, I think many people have an anti-Maester bias. Aegon uses Haldon, Doran uses Feathers and keeps his Maester out of meetings, Connington immediately executes the Maester as Griffon's Roost, Bolton executed the Maester at Harrenhal and keeps his own Maester far away. The Tyrells find out about the attack on the Shield Islands from a non-Maester messanger and Cersei is simply done with Pycelle (perhaps Qyburn's influence). And three Maesters that have tried to make it to Dany have died suddenly (Kedry, Kerwin and Aemon).

Pres, I remember correctly Bolton has three maesters, any significance? and do you think the maesters have a secret weapon up their sleeve? They seem to get the freaks and geeks treatment a lot, meaning they get bullied quite routinely.

The Hightowers may have offered Highgarden to Ulf and his mate, but they would not offer the Iron Throne. How could they, and why would they, when the purpose of the war is to seat Aegon on the Throne?

I believe the princess sent the letter to kill nettles because she stopped trusting the dragon seed. Not cause daemon was banging her. If he was there maybe another dragonseed family of targ blood out there just saying. Anyway I'm a big fan of your videos.

Gerardys was murdered for being a Rhaenerya supporter. It was Grand Maester Mellos who failed Viserys. Gerardys is the only reason the illness didn't kill Viserys sooner

Reading the Meagor the cruel chapter, he was 1st married to a Hightower of all families, who gave him zero kids, then it continues to Tyanna of the tower who admitted to poisoning his other brides and forcing miscarriages and abominations. Just saying your theory works out. No one wanted that psycho procreating.

The whole concept of a maester is counter-intuitive. Lawyer-doctor-scholar-historian-counsel for everything. Exactly like the professor on Gilligan's island? How can one guy know all these things? And its not like their medical knowledge is completely backwards either. They know enough to realize that bread mold (what penicillin comes from) will prevent "mortification" (I.e. infection). And all it would take would be for one Lord or King to be offended, thats it for the Maester. And the whole system for that matter.

I think the author intended confusion over the details as a lesson for our own history.Everyones got a master plan, everyones got an agenda, the facts change all the time.

I think Daemon is a much better human being than history shows. I personally think Hightower feared he was a candidate for the Prince That Was Promised or would father him and, thus, wanted to stop him.

Haven't finished world of ice and fire yet. Any ideas of where these maesters come from? Where they started out, their origins? Are they possibly a branch of house Hightower, the House of black-and-white? There seems to be some sort of muddy origin for everybody except them.
