Yes, I have been motivated to re-read the books by Preston's analysis, and despite how clear it is that he is going off the rails, I love and appreciate the attempt to find better meaning. Sadly, I'm not sure GRRM is worthy of these efforts anymore, esp. after listening to Preston's video about meeting GRRM, where Preston seemed to be a more scholarly authority on his work than the author himself.

I think you miss the point of why GRRM - thematically speaking - has Oberyn fight the Mountain. Time and time again throughout the books, GRRM teaches us that revenge is a dangerous path to go down and that ultimately any justice you get will be imperfect and will probably just fuck you up even more. Oberyn, even more than Arya or Robb or the Sandsnakes or any character sworn on revenge, is a lesson in why revenge doesn't work. He doesn't just want revenge; he wants the *perfect* revenge. Indeed, he's the embodiment of the fallacy that there is such a thing as the perfect revenge, that justice can have this beautiful symmetry where you're wronged and then, boom, you make things right again. Notice how Oberyn doesn't just want to kill the Mountain during the fight; he wants him to confess, very specifically, to the crime. But, as if to say that there is no such thing as a satisfying confession, GRRM - in a gruesome but wonderfully hubristic and ironic way - doesn't have the Mountain merely confess to the crime but *demonstrate* it ... on Oberyn. Oberyn won the fight and could have left it at that. But his fatal flaw as a character - and the inherent flaw in going looking for perfect justice - means that he just can't stop himself. So he finally gets his perfect confession, but, er, it doesn't work out so well for him ... I think it's an incredibly inventive and narratively satisfying way to basically say that if you go looking for exact justice, you will not find it.

I don't think it would be out of this realm to believe that Oberyn's discussions with Tyrion had two purposes. 1. The obvious one is fishing for information he can use. 2. Planting the seeds of Tyrion fleeing King's Landing and the Lannister name. I think he was very aware of how smart Tyrion is, and how useful a man like that could be. He gives incorrect statements about History to see if Tyrion catches them. It could have been all in fun, but I think there's more to it. He's sizing him up. While it's pretty common knowledge that Tyrion is a smart man, how many times have you heard of someone's supposed intelligence just to find out first hand that they were a moron? I think Oberyn was seeking an ally at the end of the day, whether personal or for Dorne is the question. Then you have the story about meeting him as a baby, and pointing out how shitty Cersei has always been to him. Why tell him that story? To further drive a wedge and stoke the feelings that Tyrion already had.

It is very clear why Oberin wanted the Mountain to confess - he would have killed him swiftly then, because a confessed sin is half a sin. Since the Mountain did not confess, Oberin chose to kill him slowly with poison instead. Only, if the Dornish prince wanted sir Gregor to die in pain, he could not have won the duel, he would have to die as well.

Perhaps Tyrion's and Oberyn's conversation about Viserys II wasn't Oberyn screwing with Tyrion but Oberyn trying to get an honest opinion of Viserys II from Tyrion. Viserys II is not just an example of good governance but also an obscure one. One that only somebody either truly committed to history or highly interested in governance would study. By making false statements about Viserys II Oberyn tests both Tyrion's knowledge of the history of Westerosi governance but also extracts an opinion about the quality of that governance.

Oberyn poisoning Tywin right before Tyrion shoots him unnecessarily with a cross bow, is somewhat reminiscent of Arya unnecessarily freeing the northern soldiers at Harrenhal who were just about to be freed by the Bloody Mummers.
@musculusiv4172
@musculusiv4172 8 жыл бұрын
I think there is a pretty good chance that Oberyn did believe in the "system" level of justice. Just look at what would have happend if Oberyn succeded in his original plan: First he would have killed Tywin. Then he would have confessed the murder publicly. Then demanded a trial by combat, which under current law, no one could have denied him. He would have won the trial by combat and could have walked away freely since the law would have then concidered him innocent of Tywins murder. He would have literally become the living example of a man, who is able to get away with almost anything just because he's a skilled fighter. What better to show how crappy and injust westerosi law is and how much better and fairer dornish law would be? Now that does sound like a winning move to me, doesn't it?
@Arcessitor
@Arcessitor 8 жыл бұрын
You can't confess the murder publicly, then trial by combat. If you confess, there is no need for judgment or further trial. You can implicate yourself and have yourself arrested, sure, but not confess.

I love the double meaning of "the Enormity that Rides". "Enormity" is commonly used to mean "great size", but the traditional definition is "terrible violation of law or morality", often used to describe things on the scale of war crimes. In particular, used as a count noun the way Oberyn is (he's essentially calling Gregor Clegane "an enormity") it almost never refers to size, but to a heinous crime.

Justice is a somewhat ridiculous ideal without first establishing rule of law, presumption of innocence, fair trials, equal protection under the law, ect. Dorian is putting the cart before the horse. That's why I struggle to root for the Dornish cause. It is doomed to fail. You can't skip steps b-f on your route from a to g.

Bravo!!! I like your analysis of the word justice. I strongly believe that justice is making sure no one is mistreated and the people that need the most help get the most help. Imagine applying such a definition the many issues in the story. Imagine if this definition was applied to the wildlings and the nights watch rather than killing each other each side of the conflict could help each other with their needs. Such a doctrine could have prevented Robert's Rebellion and the War of Five Kings.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, Tyrion is Tywin's son. Lannister men keep mistresses, a source of shame for Tywin who is reminded by it of his fathers weakness as a lord. Tywin hated his father Tytos' whoring, hates his own whoring, and hates tyrion's whoring. The incestuous Jamie and Cersi mayhaps fall from a different tree?

the confession is important for obvious reasons, especially a public one like he was trying to extract from the mountain. he wanted the world to know that Twin was guilty, to tarnish his legacy AND kill him because a simple death wasn't enough, not for a Martell anyway.

maybe the reason Oberyn decided to go to Kings Landing at that particular time was because Jaime had his hand cut off- in a trial by combat Jaime would be the champion, not the mountain, but with no hand he can't fight, so they had to choose the mountain instead

You really are bringing up a lot of the Oresteia's points. Give Aeschylus a read when you can. His tragedy trilogy, the Oresteia (Agamemnon, Libation Bearers, and Eumenidies) is all about the difference between Vengeance and Justice, and how Justice can bring an end to the cycle of vengeance.

Great stuff as always, but I think you should have also cought that widows blood was explicitly red so can easily be mixed up with wine and when Tyrion says that he looks like he just drank some poison he most likely just did.

I haven't seen your next video yet, but this one got me thinking. Assuming that these clues add up to the truth, why do they matter? What difference does it make if Oberyn killed Tywin or if he didn't? And I think the answer is that perhaps if Tywin was already effectively dead before Tyrion shot him, maybe in the big karmic picture of Westeros, Tyrion isn't counted as a kinslayer after all. "There are degrees in kinslaying, as in anything else. Fighting a battle in which a brother dies might be frowned upon, but killing him with your own hand would be considered far worse.[7]" If you stab the corpse of your father, you wouldn't be a kinslayer, right? What difference does a few hours make? So, I think, it may be revealed later on that Tyrion has escaped the curse of the kinslayer because his father was already dead.

Pretty much giving Tyrion an out of having killed his father, he was already a dead man walking. I'm convinced of The Vipers intent to poison Tywin then opt for a trial by combat, if [Oberyn] dies either way he gets his casus belli and has sown the seeds to predicate the downfall of House Lannister

In the first "deeper dorne" , you mentioned cultures wars , that Dorne master-plan is actually Rhoynish masterplan , about dying culture , and dying land. Than the next 5 videos .. back the "classic" Dornish masterplan . Shouldn't such Rhoynish masterplan , include plan for mass immigration? maybe taking over stormland and/or the reach? because even if somehow Dornish will be on the top at the end-game, their land is still dying , and winter has already arrived

Arianna may be leading the Dornish by Dream of Spring. But that doesn't give too much hope, she learned nothing Doran wanted her to from her Queenmaking adventure or her imprisonment in the tower. She may end up being our first impression of Oberyn-light.

Culture doesn’t necessarily mean race. Rhoynish culture could come to the seven kingdoms without changing the demographics.

Preston, I'm not sure if you've mentioned this before, but was Oberyn's death a part of the plan? Because to me, it is actually quite plausible (not to say it is true), or was Oberyn's death simply an accident, in your opinion?

I am under the impression that Oberyn planned to win also. Why would you plan to die unless you're insane. Oberyn defiantly thought he would win. Preston quotes a line that is like {Doran remembered Oberyn toppling boys many times his size in the water gardens. Oberyn had reminded Doran of that before he left for Kings Landing.} Why would Oberyn do this except to reassure Doran that he's going to be ok, and he's going to beat the Mountain?

Well to be fair, the key was the confession. If he really wants to avenge the life of Elia, he'd do anything for it to ruin Tywin's rep. If anything, his death rallied more support to his cause because now Dorne is very pissed that their favorite Prince is dead.
