There is a funny parallel in Sansa/Alayne telling Robin that nobles can't marry bastards to Jon telling Arya in AGOT that princes don't train with bastards (paraphrasing in both instances). There, Jon is actually the prince and Joffrey the bastard; here, Sansa is actually the trueborn noble while Sweetrobin is the bastard.

I never particularly cared for the Sansa storyline until she came to the Vale, and all this Alayne business began. It's an excellent window into Littlefinger's schemes, and even a sort of tutorial. And the fact that Sweetrobin is probably a Greenseer adds that supernatural element too. I've been waiting for the Prepping for Winter deep dive about as much as I looked forward to the Forsaken.

I personally feel they made her suddenly overconfident and a little bit arrogant. And they failed at showing how smart she was supposed to be. Seriously, what has she done? She escaped Winterfell with Brienne's help. She won the battle of the bastards with Littlefinger's help. And when she was FINALLY going to have her moment, well... it was actually BRAN who told her LF's bad intentions. Wtf??? I'd rather have her killed in a badass scene than this meaningless storyline. jeez... I still have faith in the books, though.
@pjfsr70243 жыл бұрын
@@sleepyeffy4573 So Sansa was supposed to let pride control her and not do what had to be done since Jon refused? Sansa refused LF in Molestown for good reasons, but Jon was being prideful and foolish. She also was using LF, she knows what he wanted and used herself as the bait. Bran didn't have to tell Sansa, Sansa was a witness to or victim of all LF scheming; the only thing Sansa didn't know was: Dagger and Brothel scene, Dagger to Ned's throat, Arya and Harrenhal and because she's actually running a kingdom she may not be aware that Arya was being played by LF which she would learn by holding a family meeting. Sansa set everything up for LF demise.

@lindahoekstra31727 жыл бұрын
Such a good storyline, love your analysis! Clock the profile picture, but of all ASOIAF characters, I relate to Sansa's growing up story arc the most. She just seems so much more real with all her strengths and flaws than Arya, who went from a cool tomboy to a cool badass psycho tomboy.
@rhaenyrareigns22007 жыл бұрын
Although I love Sansa it's not hard to see, as Perston has pointed out, that she can turn into a psycho as well, using her Alayne persona.
@bore-osofmyr25397 жыл бұрын
Linda Hoekstra I agree with you but I think to some extent Arya felt marginalized as far back as Winterfell, in that she never fit the mold of a noble lady, but her sister did to a T. So Arya’s transformation was jumpstarted by never feeling like she could be herself. And of course the horrors she witnessed and endured on the road with The Mountain’s soldiers probably pickled her brain pretty quickly

It isn't really as easy as that. When you meet someone with a defining feature (Sansa and Cat's auburn hair), you're entire mental image of them revolves around that feature. When its taken away or concealed, the person becomes hard to recognize. The books have already shown this with Varys, all characters that see him when disguised, never recognized him till he reveals himself.
@0jabsroomer7 жыл бұрын
Ser_ Ryon_Vine please! I have been waiting for your kevan pov forever. Or at least some other content analysis from you

Except even with Varys characters would still think he looked familiar to them. If Alayne looks familiar to you, you know that Littlefinger was close to Cat and Lysa, you think it is pretty weird that Littlefinger's bastard daughter suddenly comes into the fold without Littlefinger ever mentioning her before and you know Sansa Stark went missing after the purple wedding, it is not strange that you could put the evidence together and come to the realization that Alayne is Sansa. It would be strange if absolutely no one would piece the evidence together (and not to mention, nobody recognizing Alayne for Sansa would compeltely go against GRRM's style of writing. He LOVES it when we, the reader, do not exactly know what the characters in a story know, but we can piece that knowledge together through the actions of those characters).

Sansa and Arya could never imagine that their lives would parallel, as they forget who they were to become who their tutors want them to be.

Sansa could turn into a psycho like Arya through her Alayne persona. As Preston has pointed out, we do not know what Alayne is capable of.
@Italo2547 жыл бұрын
True, I find Sansa actually better at forgetting who she was and focusing on Alayne than Arya could be so far with her assignments.
@rhaenyrareigns22007 жыл бұрын
If only they could switch places... but then again, she seems to be this kind of character who can only change unknowingly. Arya was told that she has to change and is probably more or less aware of the changes occurring. After all, she kinda wants to be tougher and be "mentally" herself at the same time. Sansa on the other hand... I'm not sure if she'd be willing to abandon her own identity, no matter what benefits she could gain in doing so. I'm guessing that whatever happens to Sansa's mind is unwilling and she's totally unaware of it. The trauma might run so deep that she develops some kind of split personality to compensate the horrors she witnessed. The other, far more interesting thing tho, is the fact that we are probably looking at a succubus-like character (Sansa's possible power over men) accompanying a greenseer (Sweetrobin). I'm interested in seeing how these two will work with their hidden powers being suppressed and developing, maybe even feeding off each other. We will see, we will see.
@Italo2547 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting to see. I imagine both Sansa and Sweetrobin will live to see the end of the Books, and Harry will somehow die on WoW, but I'm not sure if they would ever really end up together. If they really have these supernatural powers, I would imagine Sansa as something of a "Melisandre-type-character" over the ruler of the Vale. It would be great if she would inherit Harenhall and rule the Riverlands, though...
@rhaenyrareigns22007 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. It's hard to predict what happens when George leaves so many roads open. I liked the idea presented in the comments that Mya Stone could be chosen the Queen of Love and Beauty during the tourney. Whatever happens, it seems quite clear that Littlefinger doesn't want Sansa to marry Harry. I'm just waiting for Preston's opinion to see how he puts this puzzle together. As someone else's noticed in the comments: almost every POV is prepping for a battle of some kind. What kind of battle could be hidden in Alayne's chapters?

That's something I thought about as well. With GRRM being obsessed with medieval history and filling ASOIAF with parallels to the real world, it seems strange to me how stable the faith has been, at least in appearance. It would only make sense for a counterpart to Henry VIII's shenanigans and the fight for investiture to be there. Littlefinger could frame the new high septon to the lords of westeros as a way to reclaim the nobility's power over the clergy

This seems to be coming together as a power struggle for Sansa, more than a struggle for Sweetrobin or Harry, or even the Vale. Whom ever "gets" her, will be in a prime position to marry her to either Sweetrobin or Harry. Plus, unite the North and the Vale. As Sansa is the only living child left of Eddard Stark. I think the explanation for Sweetrobin knowing about Harry being the heir could be much more banal. Highborn children would certainly learn of their own family's lineage from their maester and I think it's perfectly reasonable that the Lord, even if he is only eight years old, would know who his heir is; I think I'd wonder about that too if I were Sweetrobin. Bran certainly knew a lot about his extended family at the same age and it was far less important for him since he never expected to be Lord. As to whether he knows that he's dying... I don't know that that's confirmed in the text. Sure, he says that Harry is waiting for him to die, but he doesn't say that he _expects_ to die. It could certainly just be the same sort of reasoning, he knows that Harry is the heir, and heirs are always waiting for the Lord to die. Plus, he would not be oblivious to the fact that he isn't exactly healthy. And besides all of that, I don't think any of these things are really secrets. They might not be talked about openly since it would be unseemly to talk about who becomes Lord if the current eight-year-old Lord dies but everybody seems to know that Robert Arryn is sickly and people are definitely aware that in this world, sickly children might well die before producing an heir, even if they don't know the full extent of the child's frailty. Sansa didn't know the full extent of Robert's lineage and never considered what would happen should he die, but Sansa is like ridiculously naive. People of the Vale would certainly be interested who would become Lord should Robert die, especially since no one seems to really like Robert, Lysa or Littlefinger and like I said, it's not like that's secret information, you just have to follow the lineage. So Robert could just have picked all of this up through gossip. That would still mean that he's pretty aware of his surroundings but that's certainly possible, it's a bit of a running theme in the books that people keep underestimating children. My point is, I really don't see the need to involve a supernatural explanation when we have zero evidence that something like that is going on in this instance. There are probably other weird supernatural things happening with Sweetrobin but for him to know that information wouldn't really require anything special.
@nononono34212 жыл бұрын
Robert's handling of his doll when he fights with Sansa over the snow castle is exactly the same as Wun Wun swinging Ser Patrek by the leg like a doll. Robert skinchanged him unknowingly a la Bran-Hodor.

It's not an issue of who a noble is "allowed" to marry; by law and custom an adult noble can marry whomever they want. But it's a hugely valuable alliance you can (usually) only make once, so there's a huge amount of social and familial pressure to marry well. It's not true that Robert literally *cannot* marry Alayne, just that he mustn't for the sake of his House. I also suspect you're mistaken about bastard-founded noble houses, but don't have any evidence for it. I think they originate with noble bastards who are later granted lands in their own right. They're essentially ordinary nouveau aristocrats like Bronn; they just got a social and financial leg-up by virtue of having noble parents.

It's pretty evident that Lysa did indeed fill Robin with fear. It's elemental parenting and educating knowledge : if you smother and protect your protegée too much, you're implying and implanting the idea in their brain that the outside world and everyone apart from the parenting figure is potentially dangerous and not to be trusted. It totally makes sense. Those children often grown up either fearful of everything, or overly rebellious, eager to put themselves in danger. We saw a sample of Lysa's parenting, pretty much a "what not to do", even (or especially) in a brutal medieval-like world. I know you like Lysa and Robin, but saying she's a perfectly sane mother and didn't fill him with fear is a bit much.

The Ghost of Gotham I'd prefer him working on winds too but GoT will unfortunately be the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future. Games, movies, ect will likely(and already are) model everything after the shows dreery atmosphere, weird clothing and what not. Since that's the case I would've liked for the show to at least hold the bar a bit higher so the inevitable franchise fatiguing Hollywood producers would try to imitate the storytelling aspect of the show more than they might now that the show is dumbed down to the max and more popular than ever.

How much wasted potential in the TV show? Back up the truck. It's all wasted potential, top to bottom. When I read these sample chapters, I am saddened all over again by the quality gap between Martin and B&B. It was completely unnecessary. They could have written a show where every minute counts, every conversation is relevant, every action has consequences. In contrast, I have been watching Season 2 of "Stranger Things." This is an example of how to make quality television Every thing that happens is a perfectly-fitting brick in building a cohesive and thrilling story. Not a minute is wasted on you-need-the-bad-pussy.

Sweetrobin isn't a greenseer. Aside from the fact that you literally need to be wed to the trees to be a greenseer (until then one only has the potential to be a greenseer), it would be remarkable beyond the point of believability if there were TWO greenseers born to the same family who were of an age with each other. More likely is that he is a skin changer & has been skin changing birds, specifically falcons. His seizures aren't seizures, that is him slipping his skin.

Sleepy Effy Yeah, i think George wants to surprise us in every way, like Preston always says. So what better way to do that in the Sansa storyline than killing Harry but not the boy who everyone thinks is going to die.
@Ζήνων-ζ1ι7 жыл бұрын
But it's obvious that Preston already thinks that as well.

Well, someone in the comments already mentioned that our POV characters are all prepping for battles of some kind, so the ultimate question is: What battle will we have in Sansa's chapters? Your idea sounds like something that Martin would've wrote. Congratz!

I buy this, nothing fits George more than having the kid who's been on deaths door for 5 books end up with immense power

I think the Winged Knight may have been retconned in prep for the Bloodmoon that GRRM wanted to do for HBO. The idea behind the series would have been to depict the Age of Heroes (i.e. the founding of the Westerosi houses) so it'd make sense to include the origin of Arryn's ancestor.

Preston, I may find u a bit too martin-loving and some of your theories too self-supporting but the years of entertainment during night shifts in already 2 different jobs have lead me to the conclusin that I owe you for all this content. So I subscribed to Patreon even tho I dont agree with you on many occasions. Entertaining is entertaining.

I must say that this is probably the best comment that I've read on Preston's channel since the very beginning. Bravo.

Any scheming reason Littlefinger (or anybody else) might want to wed Mya Stone to Harry? Somebody well-enough informed could make a bastard-reveal how she is King Robert Baratheon's daughter, and has, if not a claim to the Iron Throne, at least the sort of lineage that could burnish Harry's reputation, were the Vale to make any serious moves. Maybe the reveal will include Mya being gorgeous underneath those riding leathers. (And / also, doesn't Mya remind one just a bit of Arya / Lyanna?)

One thing is sure: Littlefinger does not want Sansa to marry Harry.

if our man, Sweetrobin, is some kind of clairvoyant via the wierwood net, why does he not know that Alayne is really Sansa? He knows all these things but he doesn't know the girl he's spending all his time with is his cousin who looks just like her mother, his aunt whom he met and knew from the first book, and who looks a lot like his mother?
@rhaenyrareigns22007 жыл бұрын
He's not all-seeing, though. Even if he wasn't heavily drugged he's not necessarily a potent greenseer like Bran is. One could be more talented and / or genetically fit than the other. Maybe he saw some kind of vision exposing Sansa, but thought it was just a dream?

Her dysentry is symbolic: she gets it right after finally becoming a dragon rider. The dragons represent her inner self, her Jugian shadow, so her becoming a dragon rider means she has embraced her "dark side" and has therefore completed her individuation process. The dysentry means she's purging herself from all the falsehoods that prevented her from becoming who she truly is.

I don't think sweet Robin is aware he's dying in the immediate sense.. I think he is just saying in a general way that Harry is waiting for him to die

Preston is it not better to assume that “A World of Ice and Fire” is not necessarily a gospel telling of everything that was and is in Planetos since it was written by a Maester? Yandel definitely shows his biases throughout the novel and even doubts his own sources (recounts of Targaryen intrigue by Mushroom is one that I can think of.) I think Sweetrobins’s favorite tale of the Winged Knight as an first man is still quite secure. I’d say it was Yandel that retconed not GRRM. For some reason it seems the Maesters want to push fabulous tales back to the times of the first men and thus render them Myth and Legend rather than admit they may have happened later and thus require further examination or even be considered as fact.
@rhaenyrareigns22007 жыл бұрын
I must agree with your explanation. It makes so much sense and sounds like something that GRRM would've thought of himself. For some reason it reminded me of this line from Martin where he talked about Sansa not being a reliable narrator and the un-kiss scene. He clearly thinks about these things in advance.
