Looking for Wild Horses in the OUTER BANKS, North Carolina!

Welcome back to our channel! Or if you’re new here--hello, hi, hei, moi--we’re Preston and Krista! In this video, we make our way down to the Outer Banks in North Carolina in search of more wild horses! For the longest time we thought wild horses in the Eastern US could only be found on Assateague Island but we recently found out you can find a herd of wild horses out on the North Carolina barrier islands -- the Outer Banks! Have you ever heard about wild horses living freely in North Carolina or if you have visited the Outer Banks have you ever tried driving a 4x4 on the beach in search of them?

there is a place called Shackleford Banks that the horses swim to for some reason. It is accessible by boat. If you go, this is important, act completely oblivious to the horses. they will come close enough to touch. but if you reach for them or make eye contact... they will all bolt to the furthest extreme from all people. However if you hang out and make no sudden moves... play Frisbee or whatever... they will just hang out with you.

Rent a house on the 4 x4 beach. The horse come right up and around the horses. We saw horses swimming, drank morning coffee while the horses ran around the house, saw a baby horse. All by renting a house on the 4 x 4 beach

I did see them!! From the Beaufort boat tour!! It was from far away, but I saw their white manes! These awesome untouched horses we’re running on a sand dune!!

Just air down, and bring a shovel, recovery boards you will be all set to go. (Plus All Required Passes & Permits)

We offroad on Assateague and if your car has AWD you could totally do it and so worth it! Corolla is a much further than Ocean City MD, offseason is the best time to try it out when it's not packed.

Is a 4WD/AWD needed to go out and see the horses?

Just did this yesterday with a Jeep rental and I will say yes.

4x4 isn't required but HIGHLY recommended. The biggest reason people get stuck is not airing down tires to at least 15psi. Assateage's offroad permit requires that you air down, and bring a shovel, boards, a jack and tow straps in case you end up getting stuck. If you do ever go out offroading it's pretty amazing.
