I review, breakdown and explain Presumed Innocent episode 6. I discuss the Apple TV+ show which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Rusty Sabich as he's accused of the murder of his colleague Carolyn Polhemus. I react to Raymond collapsing at the trial, Tommy potentially becoming the main suspect and a potential twist that could involve Rusty. I also compare the story to the 1990's movie which starred Harrison Ford and the novel from the 1980s. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 7.

I think Tommy did it for now, but not because he had feelings for Carolyn, I think he's just a jealous, nerd who resents men like Rusty, the tall, handsome, successful jock who has it all, wife, kids, mistress. Tommy is awkward to everyone around him (he even says it to Nico); at the office, people dislike him because he looks creepy, he gave Carolyn "the ick" and even Nico knows he's a good prosecutor but he doesn't particularly enjoy his presence. I think Tommy was blackmailing Carolyn with something big, knowing her affair with Rusty which is why she broke things off with him. I would rule out Barbara as a suspect because she has very normal emotional responses to this whole situation. Having to hold her family together in the public eye while supporting her husband on trial is something we've seen from a lot of "wives" and the affair is a normal emotional outlet to make herself feel desirable again, something she wouldn't do if she were guilty of a crime - obviously because why make it worse? Also, we now know that it was someone with prior knowledge on the case Carolyn worked on who would've tied her up that way.

My guess is either tommy or barbara. The kid did say also that her mother was having problems with a “guy” at work which leads more towards Tommy. However I gotta agree with @paulmooremercer395 as well. Barbara being the wife of a very powerful lawyer has access to pretty much all the cases that he has ever worked on. My thing about her that keeps me thinking is when she told the therapist “ It just felt good to be wanted” which gets me thinking what if she killed her so that she can connect with her husband again and feel wanted again. I could be wrong about all of this but Im loving the show so far 😂

@@paulmooremercer395but we don’t see at any point that she could’ve asked him about the case or seen any pictures or shown any interest. It’s too easy, not only that, all the flashes of Carolyn’s death, we can see her being projected violently against the wall, implying that the person who killed her must have had enough strength to tackle her, which Barbara doesn’t look like she does. It doesn’t seem plausible to me. Also, why would she allow a picture of her son near Carolyn’s house knowing it could get him in trouble as a « black » boy.

We don’t know if that was first time him being violent towards woman like with Barbara. In earlier episodes Rusty had those flashbacks that showed him clearly hitting someone and being violent. It actually could tie to this episode’s conversation about disassociation between him and his daughter. Those flashbacks could also be just a fantasy, him imagining what it would look/be like if he did it. So there is definitely as mentioned in video something about him that resembles a split in his mind, two faces, and he may not realize.

The son has never really been a suspect and I’m fairly certain it’s not Rusty. So, if I had to rank it, 1. Tommy 2. Wife. 3. Daughter 4. Someone we have not thought of. It COULD be her son too. I think it’s too obvious to be Rusty, Tommy or Barbara. It’s more than likely someone who worked with her. So it could he Eugenia, Nico, Kumagai or even Raymond. Not sure about Barbara, but Tommy definitely screams red herring. But on the other hand it feels like such an obvious red herring it could be a double misdirection. One possibility I considered is they find an unexpected suspect near the end that seems to be the conclusion of the story, but then in the last moments it's revealed it WAS actually Tommy. Or Rusty. But that's already been done many times.

It’s the daughter!! That scene with her father outside on the porch and the conversation she started referring to what she learned in her psych class about “Derealization/Depersonalization” and about how it’s a mental state where you feel or become detached from reality due to a defense mechanism that your brain uses in moments of strong trauma or panic….she asked her father about that in particular. At first I thought it was Tommy (I still believe he is the one harassing her at work & perhaps he was there the night she died, but he didn’t kill her). It’s the daughter or her father, Rusty since she asked him if he ever felt that? Maybe she witnessed it? Regardless it appears to be just an “ordinary scenes” in a dramatic episode. There’s reasons for everything & David Kelly is a master of his craft!

I actually hope it’s not Barbara, the way she’s acted since the start really would not make sense that she did, it wouldn’t be worth the pay off of a big twist. It would make much more sense it would be actually rusty, Tommy, or one of the three kids than her, I genuinely feel it would be a cop out that wouldn’t make sense to anything we know about her character, that would drop my overall rafting for the series as a whole to play the whole thing up the way the have only to have “the wife did it” be the outcome. I don’t know if that makes sense but I binged the whole thing, first six episodes, today and that’s what comes across on a whole. The way rusty reacted to her kissing a guy, when he’s up for murder of the women he had an affair with, lied about getting back with when Barbara had forgiven him, got her pregnant, then before the kiss tells her she’s somewhat to blame when he’s the one who turned their life upside down, now she’s honest about a kiss and he gets physical with her… not good. And how crazy obsessive and weird he was about his side piece… I jist want Barbara and the kids and Raymond to come out of it as ok as they can be… which is why they’ll end up making it one of those be the killer. It’s tragic…

I read the book and have watched the movie. However this new version is sooooo different that I am finding it very suspenseful. Plausibly, the murderer could turn out to be the same person, but there are so many differences. In the book no one except the wife knew about the affair; Caroline was sterile, not pregnant; Rusty hired a crackerjack criminal lawyer; there was a key piece of evidence that went missing…and on and on). So instead of being a retread of a story I know the ending of, it’s brand new.

In the first episode Lorraine couldn’t believe Raymond didn’t know about the affair and I thought maybe he did, he used that info to frame Rusty, He also made him the prosecutor immediately so the suspicions will grow and by becoming his lawyer he could make sure Rusty will go down for this! Tommy is probably a red herring. But after the heart attack I am not so sure anymore

I'm still wondering what Rusty is repressing. His behavior is incredibly selfish. I think Raymond said it best "you feel shame but not guilt" there is an entitlement that because he's in crisis everyone should understand. Yet he created the crisis and taking responsibility fully feels minimal at best. He tells half truths and it feels like something about that night he's leaving out. Barbara could be a misdirect. Moments I believe she is innocent and other times i think it's possible she could have done it. Now TOMMY he's a WHOLE MESS!! He is OBSESSED WITH RUSTY. Ironically they feel like two sides of the same insecure coin, only Rusty hides his better. Tommy feels serial killer scary and fixated. And he's lied about a lot or omitted. I think he set up the skin dna sample. He feels obvious as the one which makes me say he's a red herring. Remember when Rusty told Maya that Caroline was cold and he went home that she knew hope would get him to leave. He felt almost diabolical in that moment. If he did do it i suspect it's not proven but he remembers after the case is over and they win. Those are my theories. About to see episode 7. Love the breakdowns and theories.

Presumed innocent is a terrible show. The acting is terrible. The dialogue is terrible. The movie with Harrison Ford and Bonnie Bedelia is 100% better than this crap they are passing off as a limited series. I fell asleep during episode two. Horrific.

It's a novel and it is Barbara who killed her, in fact there's a movie in 90s with same title like the novel. However, they might change it. As in fact they are giving his wife a bigger role than the one in the novel. It is not always about the endings anyway it's till we reach it from the aspects of dialog, acting, and direction. Till now acting is so fine, not very impressed by dialog and direction is average. Guys if u're into Crime series you shall not live without visiting ''True Detective'' season 1, nothing beats that masterpiece!

Anyone with half a brain knows about the book and the 1990 film. But that’s clearly not enough brain to refrain from spoiling the fun for those who want it. Maybe tell everyone about how true detective ends, now that you mentioned it, crime solving genius.

@@elliotcrane chill, and I didn't frame myself a ''Genius'', you just did, besides ppl are asking in the comments. As I said if you're watching for the ending, then don't bother watching any entertainment show, or you just skip to the end, while other ppl of taste watch for the whole aspects of a work of art and please try to work on your manners and stop attacking ppl from the screen of your mob. Clearly, you have problems need attention, or either you're just a teen with heightened emotions, but if you're an adult act like a one!

@@sherryhelal943 That’s called projection. There was nothing in what i said that resembles your description or even accounts for your reaction. All i did is point out that just because it’s so easy to find the answer, it’s not ok to blatantly parade it in the most visible way, so that even those who dont wanna see it do not have a choice. And THAT to me seems like some teenager trolling. If I am the teenager here, funny how I’m on youtube since 2006 since my early 20s. Why am I even engaging in this, lol

„people of TASTE watch for the aspects of the work of art” - god, you are so deep you forgot about those beneath you. And I just spoke on their behalf, it won’t happen again.
