Lyrics:
I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh
What hijacked my world that night
To a place in the past
We've been cast out of? oh oh oh oh
Now we're back in the fight
We're back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang
A circumstance beyond our control, oh oh oh oh
The phone, the tv and the news of the world
Got in the house like a pigeon from hell, oh oh oh oh
Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies
Put us back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang
The powers that be
That force us to live like we do
Bring me to my knees
When I see what they've done to you
But I'll die as I stand here today
Knowing that deep in my heart
They'll fall to ruin one day
For making us part
I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh
Those were the happiest days of my life
Like a break in the battle was your part, oh oh oh oh
In the wretched life of a lonely heart
Now we're back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang

I'm 56. I experienced joy when this dropped in 1982, and a very deep bittersweet melancholy watching it now. It reminds me of how much we have lost, from a time despite having mountains of troubles and terrible problems, still felt hopeful and optimistic - And so much cooler and real.

I'm 58. This has always been my favorite Pretenders song. It's always made me tear up, and I really don't know why - just that feeling of nostalgia, I guess. I saw the Pretenders live a few years ago - apparently it makes Chrissie Hynde tear up too. I think she said once that it always reminds her of James Honeyman-Scott, who died right before it was recorded.

The song was dedicated to the late James Honeyman-Scott who died before this was recorded. Former bandmate Pete Farndon died around the time this song peaked. All 1983 songs turned 40 last year but it seems like yesterday since I got out the old MTV videos on DVD and started watching them. What a year for music !! Many of these classics bring me to tears (happy ones) these days.

Who was addicted to listening to the weekly Top 40 Countdown radio shows in the 80s? Casey Kasem was one of the better known hosts. But I liked John Leader the best. Bands like The Prentenders, Asia, etc debuting on these countdown shows were so special to me back in the day.

The ending, with the guitar chiming guitar ascending, and Chrissie's rueful "wretched life of a lonely heart" always brought a lump to my throat... "Birds of Paradise" on Pretenders II is a very similar song about a lost love.

I cant believe this song is from 1982! It seemed 10 - 15 yrs ahead of it's time. Later Alternative artists like Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow & Sarah McLaughlin were doing very similar stuff like it was new....but Chrissi and the Pretenders hit close to the same vein many years before.

a perfect pop song. the best pop song from the 1980s and a rarity in that the more I hear it, the more bittersweet and perfect it shows itself to be. the lyrics express complex emotions regarding addiction, rupturing relationships and the gender roles we find ourselves playing out even when they don't fit. with songs like this, 2000 miles, precious, show me etc....Christie hynde is massively underrated

Such a fabulous song. Timeless. The beat, guitars, vocals, lyrics... masterful. Purchased the cassette back in the day. It was the first record I had that my older brother (by 5 yrs) ever wanted to borrow, and we talked about Chrissie Hynde and the band. He shared his Pretenders I & II vinyl and got me into their earlier tracks. Few years down the road my brother couldn't beat cancer and now this song of loss hits pretty deep with me. I think of him every time I hear it and I search out the album when I need to. The jangle guitar chugging drum beat outro may be the finest music ever recorded.

This song was a composite of two lost relationships...........1) She was talking about Ray Davies about the picture and also the death of their guitarist James Honeywell Scott

When everyone gets back to work for real, it will seem like getting back on the chain gang. Hopefully, this tune will get more airplay soon.

You're welcome for my "like" and thanks for the thanks Gwyn. I am glad I was alive in the era of this and other wonderful music that was back then. It has really helped me get thru all this crap going on now and I am thankful it is available to play and listen to again. Had Chrissie on a cassette but some nosey garage saler mustive grabbed it

A truly iconic song, a landmark of epic value. It is one of my group of songs that are a part of the things that define my life's experiences. Such amazing music, voice and performance. I am 67 and won't quit listening music like this.

They'll stand to ruin someday, for making us part. To quote Mac in Cannery Row. Kind of reminds me of a dame.

Carole Cochrane what did we do wrong? The only real mistake our generation did was raising a bunch of kids to become overly entitled snowflakes. I personally didn't do that since mine turned out to be career orientated adults who work hard, play harder and don't take no crap from anyone...
