I saw the Pretenders live a few years ago - apparently it makes Chrissie Hynde tear up too. The song was dedicated to the late James Honeyman-Scott who died before this was recorded. Former bandmate Pete Farndon died around the time this song peaked. All 1983 songs turned 40 last year but it seems like yesterday since I got out the old MTV videos on DVD and started watching them. What a year for music !! Such a fabulous song. Timeless. The beat, guitars, vocals, lyrics... masterful. Purchased the cassette back in the day. It was the first record I had that my older brother (by 5 yrs) ever wanted to borrow, and we talked about Chrissie Hynde and the band. He shared his Pretenders I & II vinyl and got me into their earlier tracks. Few years down the road my brother couldn't beat cancer and now this song of loss hits pretty deep with me. I think of him every time I hear it and I search out the album when I need to. The jangle guitar chugging drum beat outro may be the finest music ever recorded.
