Pretiosa of the Cologne cathedral

The pretiosa is a beautiful bell. It was cast by Christian Cloit and Heinrich Brodermann in Cologne in 1448 and is hung in the belfry of the south tower. "The Pretiosa is considered to be one of the most beautiful-sounding bells and testifies to the very high standard of medieval bell-casting. Until the imperial bell was cast in 1875, it was the largest bell in the cathedral."

Imperial Bell = Kaiserglocke. Andreas Hamm cast it in 1873 and is the absolute biggest freely swinging bell of all time. 26 tons it weighed. More than the bourdon bell of the Catedralei Manturii Neamulii in Bucharest which has the biggest existing freely swinging bell. Kaiserglocke was smashed in 1918 at the end of World War 1. It's clapper is what remains of it.

when we say about the bells of Cologne Cathedral, everyone automatically pictures the largest bell i.e the Petersglocke. But this one, the Pretiosa is what actually gets my attention.

They all have a great rich and full and powerful sound, big and small, I plan to see them in action. Hopefully all 11 of them in the future. It's one of my favourite belfries and cathedrals. I have never seen a sight grander than Kolner Dom ever. One day in 2017 I was looking to eat in Koln when in front of me... was this massive... mounstrous... GOTHIC PALACE, the grandest sight I'd ever seen. I have never seen any thing that will ever look any grander, vast and wonderful than Kolner Dom... even though Ulmer Munster's taller I haven't seen it in person and based from online pictures it doesn't look quite as grand. While Ulmer Munster is grand too, nothing's ever going to beat Kolner Dom in my personal opinion.

I tought this bell rings each Friday at 15:00. Nice information about this bell. It is after the St.Peter the biggest bell from Cologne. And after St.Peter the biggest from NRW. (Nordrein-Westfalen)

each friday normally rings Speciosa bell, Pretiosa rings every day from 6 july 2017 to 15 july 2017 at 15:00 p.m. because former archbishop of Cologne cardinal Joachim Meisner was dead.

TBH, I like Bourdon Marie of Notre Dame more.

Marie has true-harmonic tuning typical of newer bells, but has a relatively thin profile, which amplifies the higher partials and gives a bright sound. Pretiosa is a much heavier bell, and I prefer the more muted tone that results. But I guess it's a matter of preference.

The Marie Bourdon is a Baby-Bell and is just 6 Jears old ;) The Pretiosa Bell is a Grandma and is 564 Jears older on Marie ;), for this Older is the Pretiosa in a very good Quality, Emmanuel Bell is already the most beautiful bell of Notre Dame;) My Favorite Bell is the Big Bell of the Cathedrahl from Bern in Switzerland ;) This Big Bell weighs 10 Tons / 10'000 Kg

Marie is newer so is harmonically tuned. this bell and her sister speciosa are both untuned so reatain their rich soundboth cast in 1448

There's another big bell in Reims Cathedral about as old and equal weight as Pretiosa, her name is Charlotte with note FA2, she sounds bigger and lower and has beautiful partial tone.
