Modern technology and inovation make tugs almost unnecesary for moving ships (except in bad weather conditions then it's easier to use tugs) modern day ships use thrusters(propelers that that are put on the side of the ship and push the ship in any direction) or azipods (addings to propoulsion that make them rotate 360 degrees which is controled by the crew on the bridge)
