25 years ago my metal drummer husband to be took my little goth girl self to a Cure concert. My husband is not a Cure fan, but he was smitten with me, thankfully, and accompanied me in my long black velvet dress with silk ribbons tied all over it to see The Cure. In spite of himself, he had to admit it was amazing. A few years later, Lovesong would be our wedding song. With him being a touring musician, we often had to spend stretches of time apart, and the words that Robert Smith wrote to his wife in that song were also very fitting for us. But I digress. Nearly forty years later, Just Like Heaven takes me back to being a little girl, riding my bike and hearing it on my Walkman. A perfect song, that always makes me happy. Thank you for this fantastic episode about my favorite band ❤️

Having had the chance to fly across the country and see them multiple times, they are just amazing live. Thats not to say I don’t love the albums because I do but love the shows more. I’m also amazed that his voice hasn’t really changed at all which is insane. He’s been talking about retiring for The Cure’s 50th, as he’ll be 70. He’s also been talking about doing a big ass tour leading up to that anniversary in support of the upcoming album. I can’t wait to see them again!

This song & True Faith by New Order for me are 1987! They totally summed up the ethos of how popular music should have been throughout the 80s. I was & still am an old school Goth. The Cult, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order & The The were my go to bands. The power & energy of the music, the soulful, melancholic lyrics just spoke to a teenager starting to grasp life with both hands & yet, said more about the world in a few lines than you could muster in a 2 hour conversation with your pals or parents? They truly spoke from the heart, the depth of the soul. Thought, emotion, creative musical composition using real instruments & real talent. Gifts that have almost been lost or thrown away by so many 'so called' artists today? Thanks Prof, loved this post & especially the music it contains. Hopefully this music will never die & every generation will see the majesty & perfection of the 80s alternative supergroups?

I got this album for my 19th birthday. I had a party at my house and I remember two shy girls coming up to me to ask if they could come. My birthday was on the 27th of June so it was kind of an end of school party. I was also in grade twelve, so it was going to be the last big party of my high school years. I was active in school, both sports and student council, and everyone knew me. I also avoided the one genre of music label, I like it all. So, while i didn’t know them, they knew me. I said yes of course and it was years later until I found out that it was a really big deal for them. Long story short, they gave this album to me and while I didn’t know the Cure that much, after listening to the album for the first time, I got on my motorcycle and bought every album they had. They’ve been one of my favourites ever since. Thought I’d share this story, it’s a good example where a small thing for you, can become a very large thing for someone else. Thank you for this episode. The music from the eighties were the soundtrack of my life. Your show brings back all those good memories, and for that, I thank you very much.

There will never be another band like The Cure/Robert Smith. Their songs are like no one else's. 'Pictures of You' has a far more special meaning for me now that both my parents and my eldest sibling have passed. Time is passing...music is not the same. In fact, music today isn't music. If I knew back in the 80s what I know now, I would have appreciated those days more. Let us raise a glass to each other for we are still here and that in itself is a miracle. Let us take a sip for those who have passed and remember them fondly. Let us shed one tear and one tear only; so that those who remain will remember us with the same regard. Have a great day everyone.

They sound like every other pop band, only from earlier in the 80s. Pop synth, synth drums, and that 80s vocal style that pop singers all emulated. I don't get it. Is it the lyrics? To me this sounds like repackaged 80s cliches, which was to rock music of the day like "AI, Auto Tune, and other industry issues" are today. The fact that a band like this stuck out shows just how dreadfully samey everything had become. The measure of a song is how you feel about it, and this song reaches you and makes you feel really good, and I don't want to take from that. I just want to put The Cure in context. There is no objective way to declare them great or this song to be "perfect". This was the year Appetite for Destruction came out. People were STARVING for rock music at the time. Anything to get away from the synth-pop 80s sound, which was the only thing available.

TIL that he wrote "Lovesong" for their wedding. Beautiful, but haunting song. I have a strange feeling when I hear that song. My first husband declared that it was "our song", which was romantic at first. However, he's a deeply disturbed man whose love turned into obsession, and I had to take our son and flee 23 years ago to be safe from him. He murdered my father, and most likely an unknown victim (copious amounts of blood, but no body was ever found). Our story was on "Unsolved Mysteries" back in 1997, which is the only place any of our wedding video still exists because I destroyed that tape. He never remarried, and last year I found out that he lives in my old apartment, the last residence he knows of that I lived in during 1995-1996. He found me and his now 32 year old son last year, where I live now that's 1500 miles from my hometown, and sent our son a brief letter (which my son refuses to read). I didn't tell him that his "father" also named his business after our son. It would only anger him, so I never mention his father. If he is stupid enough to come here in person, then he chooses to die here. I'm not afraid of him anymore.

TOP 100 SONGS of any genre only rules. No Christians hymns (too many) and only 3 songs per person or band, unless composer of classical then only one song, except Rush, who I gave 5 songs to, since they’re my favorite band and in the top 3 some that don’t even sound like Rock’n Roll. ** Unnamed band is a local band, at the time to Akron, Ohio, and won battle of the bands at “The University of Akron,” while being students there, in one of these years: 1992, 1993, or 1994. When I think of the Cure, “Friday, I’m in Love” is probably the song I think of first. Then, ‘Love Cats’. However, I was singing a line to ‘Just Like Heaven’ to myself about six months after it was released and I heard a voice respond with the next line. I dated that woman for the next three years. Looking back, I’d be hard pressed to choose a favourite Cure album, but due to ‘Hot, Hot, Hot’, I could never choose Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Perhaps it’s time to go back and give them a spin. Thanks for the content.

I nailed it! This song came out when I was a freshman. ❤ My aunts and uncles loved this song too! They were in their late 20’s and early 30’s. I can remember them blasting this song in their car. Years later, we were at a wedding and this song played. My aunts and their friends, who were in their late 40’s lost their bloody minds! They completely took over the dance floor. I’ll never forget that moment! 😂 Thanks Professor of Rock! Great video on my birthday 🥳

The Cure is just one of those bands that reaches across genres, social classes and political spectrums. My wife was talking to a girl in her early twenties recently. She was over the moon about getting to see the Cure live. They talked for over an hour about the Cure. If I had one word to describe the Cure it’s catharsis.

The Cure conjures memories of high school in the early 90s for me. I was that quiet girl who sat alone on the bus, slunk down with my knees tucked up, headphones on, Discman spinning Wish. Was first introduced to them via Mixed Up on tape. Led to a lifelong love affair with the band, and finally saw them live, third row, in my 40s. Fantastic, gorgeous experience I'll never forget. For me, High is up there with Just Like Heaven. Always dreamed of dancing to it at my wedding. Still a loner, waiting for that love like Robert and Mary have, but dancing to it anyways. ❤❤❤ Thank you for featuring this song! Other "perfect" songs from the era for me were Evenflo, Today, and Mysterious Ways. But I don't think any really top Just Like Heaven when it comes to the craftsmanship in every single moment, from music to lyrics. For me, the best songs are the ones that tell stories and The Cure was so good at that.

Absolutely classic! The opening is what totally drew me in to this song when I first heard it back then…unique & loved it ever since. Can’t help but smile & be transported whenever it comes on. I knew it was going to be Just Like Heaven and I agree with you! Been a Cure fan all my life. I remember my stepdad got a CD player in 1987 (they were new back then) and he probably just grabbed a few CDs from the New Release section to test them out- one was Kiss Me x3. Back then I was just about to go into 7th grade and wasn't really into music yet. When he put that CD on I remember it very vividly, I stopped what I was doing and exclaimed "WHAT IS THIS??!" That music spoke to me and never stopped.

I was working at a record store in 1987 when CDs came out. At first we got 5 titles, and we put them in a little stand on the checkout counter. No one knew what they were. Customers asked us if they could play them on their record players. When we said "No, you need a special player for them," they all said "Well that will never catch on." 😅

This song, like much of their others, is like Prozac without any negative side effects. To identify with a song and the sadness within is cathartic, and comforting, reassuring that someone else has been there and you're not so alone as it may seem. It still sounds new, yet it's an ageless classic. The Cure is a band that has been 100% real from the beginning, never to waver from their art many around the world hold as sacred. They're not my favorite band, but the love I have for them isn't like that of any other.

My dad introducing me to alternative music through them (and other bands of course). My first boyfriend at 15 years old quoting the first line of Just Like Heaven to me. There isn't a single note, word, or inflection that should be changed. It is sheer and utter perfection. I don't think of it as uplifting or exhilarating though. Flash forward to New Year's 2003, I had a mixed cd playing while I gave birth - my son was born to Learning to Fly, and then flash forward a few more years, he was diagnosed as having a severe level of Autism - and the chorus of that song felt like prophecy - it was my little boy, who spun around with abandon, who truly seemed Earthbound.
