Nice sourcing and great building my friend! Great teacher, love learning all the mechanics on motorcycles! Since I'm an EE I understood the magneto discussion. "He who cuts directly across magnetic flux lines is always true with full power."

I have a Fairbanks Morse Magneto on my 1965 Triumph TR6. I love having train part on my motorcycle. Magneto's are great your whole electrical system could take a dump but you can forgive a bike a lot of things if it doesn't make you push it home. Joseph Lucas was quoted as saying gentlemen do not ride at night.

Good informative video but doing it with the engine complete and in the bike is a whole 'nother story. Where did you get the Triumph branded points cover? One of those would look good on my pre unit Tiger.
@weemsmotorco2 жыл бұрын
I custom made the cover for this build. Not much more on doing this with the engine in frame just a little easier access to the magneto outside the frame.

I've beem building Triumph engines for 40 years. To this day, i still prefer cigarette rolling papers (0.0008" or 0.001" depending on brand) over all other methods for points opening. Yeah, a Luddite dinasaur, but it always works perfick.
@TheReverb12 жыл бұрын
Hello; may I question to what rotation do you set the points to start to break? I mean; the EX cam rotates CW so I think in a unit motor the magneto cam (moved with the hex shaft from behind) would be rotates CW too to get the points just starting to open (looking from the timing side) or are set to the other side? Thanks.
@michaelhayward75722 жыл бұрын
@@TheReverb1 cigarette paper already in the points. Engine rotating in normal direction (plugs out, top gear, using rear wheel), as points open, paper pulls out. Simples.
@TheReverb12 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhayward7572 ...thanks but the question was not about the technique, for example for a pre unit the Lucas rotates CCW the breaker to set the points. In this case is exactly what I asked in the other comment. Is a fixed mag and is a unit motor.
@michaelhayward75722 жыл бұрын
@@TheReverb1 my unit Hunt mags have no AA. Pre unit mags can use either h/bar manual advance, A/A, or fixed. Timing is always done fully advanced. And yes, units and pre units run in opposite directions.
@TheReverb12 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhayward7572 Ok; seems that I set the points to start to break right (clockwise rotation) I asked due to I have a strong kickback in every kick. All mention "retard" the timing. I checked at 38º, at 5/16 the Hunt instructions (that is not 38) at 34º. All the same so I thought that I have the points set to the wrong side. Seems that I am the only one with these fixed magnetos kickbacking.All timing marks are perfectly right. Camshafts are in the factory marks.

Hi, I really hope someone is able to help me here. I’m currently building a BSA A10 chopper and I also fitted a Joe Hunt mag with the fixed timing gear. I’ve checked literally everything for a million times - yes it gets fuel - yes the carb has roughly the right jets - yes idle and mixture are in a neutral position - yes it has spark - and yes it also has compression - the cam is timed correctly etc. But the damn thing just would start. I’ve got it running like 2-3 times and it backfires but just really puts up a fight. I’ve been kickin for almost 45 min. now. So I really would appreciate any tips or ideas. Is there a special starting procedure with fixed times bikes? Or is there any other solution to this problem?

Have you tried flipping the sparkplug leads? Place the Timing side plug wire on the Primary side plug and vise versa. See if that works.

Hi; for sure put an auto advance unit is far better than that pinion that you put. Those things are not good if you actually rides a bike...of course that is not a bike to use.

Thereverb 1. I agree with you. I want to swap my original BTH mag to a new Joe Hunt that I already have for my 1951 Thunderbird 650 pre- unit...using the auto advance. Are you aware of any problems I may run into? Any info would be appreciated.
@TheReverb1 Жыл бұрын
@@dubes5594 Hello; I have 2 Hunt magnetos (BTH is a fine mag too. I bought the first Hunt due to I lost the BTH! and that the coil is static there instead of rotating like the British) If you have the auto advance unit; the Hunt would be a pleasure to use. I have about 40000km on it in my 500. Always starts first kick after prime the carburetor (is important to have a new carburetor. I have the concentric) The disadvantage is that Hunt have the worst communication; even to buy spare parts. The other Hunt is in a 79 bonneville and as do not have the auto advance; is a pain to start so I bought the Morris retard kit but still a pain to start.
@dubes5594 Жыл бұрын
@@TheReverb1 my BTH mag came in pieces. I'll send it out for a complete overhaul eventually since this bike is compleatly stock and original. I want to use the Hunt mag at first with the auto advance and maby as a spare later. The advance bolts right on and doesnt seem to need any mods. My British bike friends cant seem to agree on weather it will work or not but I think I will. Thanks for your advice. The guys I knew who were pre-unit experts have all passed away. Thanks again.
@TheReverb1 Жыл бұрын
@@dubes5594 Alright; what do you mean with "will work or not" the auto advance unit? came stock with the bike!, Mate I rebuild all my Triumphs and soon I would rebuild a 79 so I wrench too so be confident to put a Hunt mag or a BTH The only thing is that a pre unit Hunt have the shaft etc a bit different so are not interchangeable with the ones for units.
@dubes5594 Жыл бұрын
@@TheReverb1 I haven't looked at it in 2 years but i just checked and the Hunt mag shaft taper and male thread fits perfectly to the bth advance taper, the nut and the gear. I think the other guys were doubtful because they never seen it done before on a pre-unit. (and neither have i.) Its good to hear from someone who's actually done it already so now I can go worry about something else. I had a unit 650 chopper with a hunt mag out the side and it ran great but not the same shaft, as you said. Thanks for the help.
