The Der Hochbeinige 238 is a German styled 4-4-0 36" gauge locomotive. It was built in 1974 by Crown Metal Products in Wyano, Pennsylvania. This locomotive is the only German styled locomotive ever built by Crown and it was built specifically for Busch Gardens. The 238 originally had a three chime whistle before changing to a single chime whistle. 238's tender carries 600 gallons of propane, and 1,436 gallons of water. 238 produces 180 pounds of steam to move the four 56" diameter drivers. Red's locomotive weighs in at 43,462lbs, and the tender weighs in at 33,027lbs. A combined weight of 38.27 tons. 238 has one single cylinder air pump, and two whistles. One steam whistle, and one air whistle. There are two large air tanks on the top of the tender. Red has three headlamps, but only one is functional. The shiny brass dome, is used for sand. The black dome is the steam dome.
The Der Hochbeinige is modeled off of a Preussische Staatsbahn (Prussian State Railway) steam locomotive. The 238 has a five car train that it pulls on the Busch Gardens Railway; four coaches, and one coach with a conductor area and wheelchair lift. The 238's name "Der Hochbeinige" means "long legged one". It was named this because of its long drive rods. The coaches were once named Heidelberg Express.
