Prevent Your Pop Up’s BATTERY from Becoming a Paperweight! | Pop Up Camper Battery MAINTENANCE 🔋

This video details how to prevent your pop up camper’s battery, specifically deep cycle 12-volt lead acid batteries, from becoming a paperweight! First, it’s important to ensure that your lead battery’s internals are in tip-top shape. Specifically, it’s important to ensure the metal plates within the battery are completely covered. This is where distilled water comes into play. Simply add a bit of distilled water, with the help of a funnel, which will help ensure that the battery does not prematurely sulfate. I like to keep all of the levels equal or level across all of the cells.
Secondly, it’s important to keep your battery’s charge topped off when it’s not being either, a) charged by the converter via shore power or b) charged by your tow vehicle via a 7-pin connector. This is where a charger/maintainer comes into play. We utilize a 1.2 amp charger to keep our charger topped off when our pop up is not in use. If you don’t keep your battery charged it, it’s possible for parasitic draws, such as the propane alarm, to draw down the battery to the point where you have to purchase a new one! Simply put, it’ll become a paperweight that cannot be rescued! So, save yourself some money and purchase a charger/maintainer and keep your battery topped off at least every 30 days if it’s not connected to the pop up. If it is connected to the pop up, keep it connected all the time.

Because my wife and I both use C paps, I installed two 6 volt, golf cart batteries with great success, we only dry camp, this was on a Coleman Tent trailer, if you have the space , wish I could have sent a photo

Hi from Australia! Love your channel, lots of great info. In Australia it’s illegal to run a lead acid battery such as yours in a camper or caravan. All batteries in Australian campers or caravans must be sealed lead acid, AGM or lithium. In our pop top we use a 120amp AGM and in our vehicle canopy we have have 2 x100amp lithium.

Our camper has roof top air, but our home does not have a 35 amp outlet. What are your thoughts on using a 20 amp, or 15 amp house outlet? I heard that anything less than 35 could damage the air conditioner.

So, I have a relatively new battery, fully charged it, topped it with distilled water and put the maintainer on the battery. It went into 'maintenance mode'. After a few weeks there was a definite odor of H2S. Voltage was reading about 13 - 13.5V. I had this in my basement so I would imagine there is quite a lot less air circulation than in your garage. Have you experienced this at all?
