Very unique in their discography and while 99.99% of DT fans would absolutely disagree, this is one of my favorite songs in their catalog. It was the perfect swan song for Kevin Moore..

Classic Dream Theater needs more attention. Take the Time, Wait for Sleep, Learning to Live, Lie, Scarred, 6:00, Hells Kitchen+Lines in The Sand, A Change of Seasons. And James was a beast of a vocalist before his vocal injury after this album. He may be an acquired taste for some, but he brings so much to the songs and often gets overlooked.

This is an incredible song. A rare track from Dream Theater and closes out their (in my opinion) best album. Kevin Moore has a real talent for lyrics and arranging songs. Because of this song every time I listen to Awake and it ends with this I have to just put the album on again and listen. "There's no one to take my blame If they wanted to There's nothing to keep me sane And it's all the same to you There's nowhere to set my aim So I'm everywhere Never come near me again Do you really think I need you I'll never be open again, I could never be open again.

Kevin Moore brought such a unique element to DT. He's less virtuosic than Jordan Rudess, but he had a way with atmosphere and mood that was too often lacking after he left. He really helped add a right-brained touch to DT's often very left-brained music. This has always been one of my favorite DT tracks just purely because of how it makes me feel.

Little background into the track: Kevin Moore was at a low point in his life in a few different aspects and came across a catalog of a model wearing what was called a space dye vest, and he instantly fell in love with this model (knowing nothing about her). He started pulling himself out of his rut and immediately wrote this song.

Thanks Geebz! this song really hits me emotionally, the feel it radiates is something else, and so hauntingly beautiful and unqiue, and the way it builds with the other instruments coming in is brilliant. Not something you'll always be in the mood for, but when you are it's amazing. I love the guitar part that plays the melody with slides...I think there's a video of them recording it where they had to keep spraying the fret board so that he didn't hurt his finger haha. The demo of the song was completely written by Kevin Moore. It's about him becoming obsessed with a girl on the page of a magazine wearing a space-dye vest after he had just gone through a break-up. And some lyrics really hit me hard like "There's nowhere to set my aim, So I'm everywhere" "And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend, And I'll never be open again". The movie/tv clips are actually also separated by static from changing channels, delivering it in a way to show that he is watching tv flipping through channels, something that took me a long time to notice.

Beautiful music from Dream Theater Space-Dye Vest ! It's well forged metal 🙂 I saw Dream Theater in Paris in 2000, The Spirit Carries On tour. The greatest of progressive rock. Images and Words (1992) and Awake (1994) are the two best progressive metal albums of all time.

Space Dye Vest always hits me right in the feels. More specifically, Kevin Moore rules. The whole album they razzle dazzle you with technique and then end it with SDV. Amazing. Didn't realize how important Kevin was for my adoration of DT until he left. Derek and Jordan are great don't get me wrong, but Kevin will forever just be *it* for me when it comes to DT. On another level. Sound/Patch selection in addition to technical proficiency is just such an amazing combination. Check out Chroma Key - On the Page. Anyways, this has turned into a Kevin Moore fanboy post but feel pretty strongly about him and his contributions to DT/Fates Warning/etc.

This song, along with several others, will always remind me of a quite dark time in my life, which (fittingly) contained the breakup of my first long-term relationship, and several other things in my life that didn't turn out at all as planned (at that time). Listening to it will always remind me of that time, but that won't stop me from doing it, since it's just such a fantastic piece of music. And even if it puts me in a sort of melancholy mood, it then is a good reminder that in the end, I turned out to be OK. It's not that everything is fine, and there have been scars left, but this path has led me to where I am now. Man, that sounds cheesy...

I think this was Moore's farewell to the band, and to the woman he was writing/singing about. Well, LaBrie as the vocalist. After she left, he was looking at a magazine delivered to their house/apartment. It was a Spiegel's catalog, and there was an item called Space-Dye Vest. How something so mundane can fling a person back into those moments is heartbreaking.

"Awake" is my favourite DT album (it was also my first) precisely because it is spacey, it breathes! Kevin Moore was all about texture, about soundscapes. Him and Petrucci complemented each other. Petrucci and Rudess just compete with each other and it gets tiresome quickly.

Excellent breakdown of a song from one of DT's best albums. A foreshadowing of where Kevin Moore would go with his project Chroma Key, all of which is high quality ambient, synth-driven pop/rock.
