River interlinking is god idea. Water will be efficiently used and also it will solve river flood which generally happen in India during rainy season. The solution was come up after lots of brain storming by experts who knows the subject better than media.

Instead of doing this super big , super coastly , unsustainable projects , it's better to concentrate on building and restoring the natural tanks, ponds and lakes and doing rainwater harvesting at every place. We should adopt methods which are most suitable for a particular region .

I was earlier great supporter of inter linking, but when one develop little ecological sensitivity, then one realises that river is not a water, it's a ecosystem. Even structural dam building destroys the ecosystem of river. When one ecosystem mixes with other, it can create unintended consequences. I don't agree with the confidence in prediction by the paper. One cant even predict 10% of consequences. We are not able to even predict even annual phenomenon like monsoon. We don't even know all the variables in these atmospheric, hydrological interaction. One need to use nature to solve our problems, not try to tame it.

Thanks for the insight into that paper. It is definitely a factor that should be considered, now that it was explicitly studied. I wouldn't have, thought that land atmo feedback could have made such a difference. I thought the overwhelming majority of the monsoon was just brought in from the indian ocean and land transpiration would have been a trivial rounding error

The topic is interesting, Would have liked to see a more rigourous analysis. Not quite able to understand the issue. Even if the disparaties in rainfall increase , the river links would transfer excess water to the drier regions. This would allow us to be somewhat independent of the uncertainities of weather patterns.

Inter-linking of rivers is very essential and absolutely necessary for our survival. After we finish road and rail projects, and after couple of decades( later )this will be the next big infrastructure project which will catapult our nation from middle income trap and led us to developed nation.Read about Pollavarum and Kalleshwaram projects in Telangana. Also inter linking of rivers is not something new- china had linked its rivers by _The Great canal (1774kms in length) in 609 AD (built from 604 to 609 AD). It had caused increased food production and brought lot of prosperity to China. It has stood the test of time. Isn't nature linking rivers too- see the tributaries of all major rivers. If only ecologist are heard ,then we will have no progress of mankind. There is always creative destruction in nature. DON'T ACT AS IF SOME PANDORAS BOX WILL BE OPENED. All studies must be done and respected .We must take as much precautions as possible. But this pundits must not be allowed to tell us what to do. They are also speculating as pro-Interlinking guys, so all their 'research papers' must be read with 'a ton of salt'

If it's trough Buckingham Canal,... Sorry, we Kaveri people won't want to drink and live on spoiled water from Madras city. Kaveri can sustain herself if its bassin was genuinely managed by non Chennaiite and non Bangalorean people. Kaveri issue is grossed only due to outdated chauvinism in both sides (even if I admit that Kannadigas are more responsible and problems makers than Tamilians (outside of the non-Kavery bassin living Chennaiites).

What about Riparian Law? If India is moving water around, why won't China take the rivers in the Himalayas and redistribute the water into the Tibetan Plateau for Han Chinese farmers to cultivate land. Why hasn't this reasoning been applied to the redistribution of water under the Punjab Re Organisation Act? Why are Punjab waters being given to Rajasthan a non riparian state.

The adverse effects are greatly extracted and this idea of connecting the waters is of vital importance for preserving the water table of the entire nation. The change in climate is something we are fighting globally. It is a slow and tedious process. River linking can only be successful if it's strictly carried out with utilising water for atleast 2 decades and let new ecosystems develop before human usage begins. Ocean salinity is the first issue that crops up if net surface run off is reduced which eventually changes our weather pattern.

Temporary lakes by the rivers all along the river can also help alleviate and regulate the floods. Not unlike a capacitor in circuit to absorb and store extra water and use it when water is scarce.

Rivers can be interlinked by underground PVC pipes . If gas pipeline can transport gas , ita much easier to divert water with heavy water pumps . Land acquisition will not be required . Pipeline 3 feet below surface will not disturb agriculture . Intelinking may not be a good idea.

Sounds like there are changes to climate, I didn't hear anything which is impossible to sort out. More rainfall and floods can be mitigated by building several lakes and reservoirs. The drier areas will anyway get water from the bigger rivers, so I don't see a problem there. Sounds like really lame reasons to not connect the rivers. Sounds like a ploy to ensure India doesn't every build any large infrastructure projects. Besides, if the connect is done carefully and thought out properly, the canals can additionally be used for inter-state trade/transport and the reservoirs can be used as batteries to hold potential energy (if they're built underground and are large enough).

There is no such thing as free lunch. For every action there is a reaction. Every project has some form of impact on nature. The cost-risk-benefit evaluation should be the guide. We can't stop every project because it has an environmental impact. We can't afford to stop major projects of national importance because some pigmy frog population is impacted. Every year numerous species become extinct without any human action. Extinction of species, rivers going dry, formation of desert, formation and drying up of lakes are all part of nature. The humans have little say in it. The human species itself can become extinct in a short time. Global warming is already a monster in works. If river linking can minimise future water wars we must go ahead with it without any delay. The sad thing is that most impact studies are purely academic and done for prestige or popularity. It is fashionable to Protest against every project and there is no shortage of funding for activists. Water is scarce and allowing it to flow unused into the sea is not something we can afford in future.

A better solution would be to better catch rain water. Have a water feed system where fresh water is given first for human usage (drinking water, washing body etc) and then that is fed via water purification to the agriculture sector and finally to the industrial sector.

During Mr Devendra Fadnavis as C M , he had concentrated on above method under the name of Jal youkhtayukhta The follow up showed encouraging results. Unfortunately , subsequent MVA government abandoned the scheme. The Ken Betwa rivers interlinking could be considered as a trial river linking project . Could be studied in depth before going further.

Already damge has been done, in the name of irrigation in karnataka, after they started irrigating dry lands in east by bulding dam in west karnataka, we have seen drastic decline of rain fall on centrel parts of karnataka, Majoriy rainfall happens in 70Kms from westren ghats and far estren parts and Telangana, stlll yet to see this year

Thanks for the insightful and enlightening discussion on this important topic.. 👏👏 If one tries to summarize, it seems that the medicine is dangerous than the disease itself in this case.. I hope our Policymakers pay due attention to this warning.. The concepts like Interlinking of rivers sound extremely exciting and promising ( and perhaps politically beneficial as well)... But when you try to get to the basics, only then you realize what consequences it is going to have on the nature and mankind.. Tinkering with nature never helps.. You cannot forcibly try to change the topography and the eco system across the country by carrying out massive construction activities in the form of dams, canals and what not.. The best way to tackle water scarcity is to make best use of each and every drop of water that comes your way... You need to learn to manage water more effectively and meticulously.. And for doing this, maximum interest and contribution should come not from the Government but the people themselves... How many of us really care for the mother nature? That task is left to a handful of environmental experts in the country it seems.. I wish such videos are watched by lakhs and lakhs of people.. But it won't happen... Instead had you covered some spicy political discussion or some bollywood stuff, you will find millions of viewers...

Well presented. And i liked Sandhya’s style of simple articulation. Made it easy to follow! 🙏🏿 I really hope that we don’t tinker around with nature at such a large scale. As a country, we are still so immature in basic maintenance of natural water bodies - if we actually did that well, maybe half our problems will be solved

I dont think the studies are very accurate. All we are trying to do is to take excess water to areas where there is no water. The impact will only be positive becuase when rainfall increases in one area, it could be taken to other. I just hope they can built a vice versa system just in case opposite happens with rainfall areas.
